the pads block the valley on top of the tail lights that collects water. you could probably make something on your own. they are supposed to come with the gaskets now but you can get the separate if you ask.

I had the same issue and as referred in another thread i removed the light and cleaned everything. I put alcohol in the taillight and swashed it around to clean up dirt seeing as alcohol dries fairly quick i just placed the light on the front porch and it fogged up and then i placed it in front of a cool fan and it cleared up within 5 min's and now its brand new and my gasket was actually ripped in 3 pieces and the center was on the car so i removed it and used Krazy glue and repaired it gently and just installed everything and sprayed the rear with the hose and so far no condensation or water getting in so ill let everyone know how it holds up in the next couple days.

As the good folks at Rosenthal point out, it is a warranty-swap item. I'm getting my passenger side tailight replaced next week (the driver's side a couple years ago).

edit: I just had my passenger side taillight replaced, under warranty, due to condensation over the Winter. The dealership actually replaced both gaskets, even tho' my driver's side light has been fine since it too was replaced a couple years ago.
