See if they'll let you bring it to the nearest Mazda dealer to do a checkout on it. Cost you $50 and they'll tell you whether the car has been through any ordeals.

Mine is an '04 & as 21k.
I wouldn't touch it.
But, if you are interested, then drive it to a dealer & ask them to inspect it for you & let you know of any problems.
If they won't let you take it to a dealer, then invest your money elsewhere.
A dealer can also look up the VIN & see what work has been done (if it was done through a reputable shop to begin with). Also, order a carfax report.
And, the dealer should know what to look for to be able to tell if it's been flooded.

Personally, I did a ton of searching and researching before I bought my 04. One with 60K miles on it, it appears to only be a sport package, and potentially only a automatic leads me to believe that 16,900 is not a good deal at all. 14,900 may or may not be a good deal. For 14,900, I would have to check a Carfax history report like dreamfrog said. It would also be worth someone taking a look at for 14,900, but not for 16,900. If you are serious about looking for an 04 or and 05, I would like at carmax.com and autoweb.com. Carmax sells a ton of used cars, and they guarantee that it has not been involved in any major claims or flood damage. Even from Carmax, I would still look over an 8 before you buy it, or have someone you feel comfortable that knows about the RX-8 take a look at it. I had to have new brakes put on mine after only having it a couple of months...so it never hurts to do your research, which should include going to Mazda to take a look at a brand new one. The new model year is almost exactly the same as the 04s. Looking at a new one just gives you an idea of what should and should not be there.
