Done that..... Mazda says they cant dictate pricing with independent dealers.

Which is why I want to call up a dealer in the mainland and try to work a deal that way. The only problem I'm concerned with is if a mainland car is built different than a Hawaii one. Dont mainland cars have a different kind of transmission or emissions thing... I thought California cars did.

As for timeliness of this thread, his concern in HI is quite up-to-date apparently. I believe CA has it's own emissions requirements and since I believe the RX-8 meets ULEV I think they likely meet CA's also. That said, there's little reason you couldn't buy one from WA or Oregon, or even MD, and have it shipped on a truck to a port in CA to be shipped to Hawaaii! my opinion anyway... no experience to go on.

That sucks. Charlie Hughs (at least I think it was him...memory is fuzzy now) at Sevenstock was directly asked about dealer markups, and his answer was very reassuring, something like "don't worry about dealer markups, we'll handle the dealers." I would suggest writing a nice snail mail letter to Mr. Hughs describing your situation, noting what he said at Sevenstock, and then noting the response you got from his underlings to see if you can generate a little more pressure.

I say I WOULD suggest that, but apparently Charlie was fired a few days ago. Maybe try writing to the new acting president? I don't know if he would even care about something Charlie said, but it couldn't hurt to write.

When my nearby MAZDA dealer said $4,000 over sticker I went to another dealership in an state and ordered the car at a good price. Also, check EBAY. I saw dealer in Tennessee selling them at sticker.

My dealership also told me that they would be selling the first allocation of cars at MSRP (luckily I'm in that group), and then the 2nd and 3rd allocations will be selling for a minimum of $3-4k over MSRP. I do not find that hard to believe. I think that is exactly what will happen and there will still be a waiting list to get one. At least for the first year or so. They wanted to get the first allocation sold right away to get the cars out in the public eye....and then when somebody takes an interest in buying one they will give them "the shaft".

$10-15k over is a bit foolish, but there are probably people out there that will fall in love with the cars once they're on the road and be willing to pay close to $40k.

Between $40k - $45k! Faster than a Porsche 911! I think the dealer must have been talking about the next RX-7 - ask him for more details!

Whatever that dealer was smoking, I think it is illegal in all 50 states.

I lived in California for many years, and I remember many of the dealers being real snakes. It sounds like not much has changed. You definitely need to talk with someone more credible.

geez we should do something about these dirty dealers... mazda should do something about it; it's totally WRONG. we should just all start writing angry emails to maz about the jacked up dealers. that's JACKED UP!
