My sales guy said "If I feel like I have to grab the 'Oh, ****' handle, we're done."

This sucked . . . but it was still an awesome test drive.

Peace

My car only had 2 miles when I got it! Test drove it and took it home that night.

Ditto on the test drive speed. I was up to 115 on the Interstate before I realized it..and yes, it WAS mph!! But it was the superb cornering that really got my adrenalin flowing.

As for those that sorta chastised the Vette test drive, they have a policy that a new delivery can not have more than 15 miles on it. My brother will be ordering his '06 Vette this week.

I had the same experience, a cool sales-person. What sold me on the car wasn't the fact that I could hit 100+ on the onramp of the freeway, (okay, maybe a little), but the way that it handled in the turns: flat out with almost effortless effort.
I did get the salesperson to grab the 'oh-****' handle, and also got him to stop mid-sentence while describing the stereo, but he was totally cool about the whole thing.

Busted!

At 132 mph, you will be arrested. You will most likely lose your driving privige for 1 year, or more. As a flight Paramedic, I see the, the not so happy ending, to many, "Let's see what she will do", excersizes. This Friday and Saturday, we transported a lot of folks- (seven auto fatalities). Of those seven, one was a pasenger in an 04- RX 8. The color was blue. It took us 45 min- to get him out, bags, belts, all did the best those devices can do, but when a car, any car , roles 6 times, and finally comes to rest against a bridge support, your hopes of delivering a viable patient dwindle.
Save the speed for the track!!

SoundslikemyfirsttestdriveIwasonthefreewayandcruis ingandlookedatthespeedoandwasup over100IhadnoideaIwasgoingthatfast! (For the grammar police we got monitoring the boards!)

Easy to read translation:

Sounds like my first test drive, I was on the freeway and cruising and looked at the speedo and was up over 100! I had no idea I was going that fast!

Frank, just a question, did you add the color of the car to help debuff the color curse? I thought it was kind of funny in a serious post is all.

I really doubt you did 132 in 4th gear. Redline in 5th is 227 kph (141 mph)...I find it hard to believe that 4th's redline would be a mere 9 mph lower.

And so the moral of the story:

Don't ever buy a dealer demo car!! You'll be sorry!!

I didn't approach 100 on my test drive (more like 70ish) - but what sold me was when the salesman said "If you like how it "goes" - you're gonna LOVE how it stops."

Took me to a safe road where we could do a few HARD stops - and he was right - LOVED how it stopped. Bought the car.

Winning Blue-my color

The post was serious, I drive a blue 8. Have I ever driven at 132 mph, on a public road- NO! I think most RX 8 drivers, just by virtue of buying theses vehicles, are, in general, smarter then average, and therefor less likely to do something of this nature. Any dealer who uses this tatic to sell cars, should have thier lic. revoked.

Please excuse the serious post, but it was not a good weekend, here, for fatal car accidents. If that post keeps only one RX8 owner from endangering themselves or someone else from speeding, just one time, it was worth it.

Just to clarify, I was NOT condoning driving over 100 mph; simply stating that during my test drive, I wasn't paying strict attention to the speedometer and without "feeling it" found myself over the 100 mph. Now, I was on the interstate and there was little traffic...and I immediately backed off. But the point is, the RX-8 is a smooth ride.

aye, going faster than 80 on public roads is beggin for something to happen to you. Even is you are a "better" driver than most there are too many sup-par drivers out there to mess you up, plus the unknowns like potholes, semis, etc. Be smart and drive like a bat out of hell on a track.

get on the FL turnpike on a nice weekend afternoon going to miami. I set the cruise control for 92 mph and I was in the right lane getting passed by groups of 3,5,10+ cars at a time, all bunched together, 3 feet apart, doing at least 100mph im talking groups with SUV's, Minivans, BMW's ect. all kinds, some prolly close to being toped out.

while im not saying that is safe or smart, sometimes you just CANT go the speedlimit safely.

this brings up another question. when they limit the top speed of a car to say 155, why did they pick THAT speed. why not something lower, say just over the legal limit? like 100mph, thats 25mph FASTER than any posted limit in the US (not counting unrestricted roads) surely you could do any passing you need to with 25mph of headroom.

It just seems like if your gonna keep the car from going any faster than 155. but the car could go say 170 as a true top speed....why bother?

I had kinda the same experience on my test drive. Part that I find strange in a number of your posts is that the sales guys came with you? I took out a far number of cars over the last month and nothing I would consider ghetto ( An audi a4, Acura TSX, BMW 325, Saab 9-3 linear ) and never once did the sales person come with us. The only time ive had a sales person tag along was looking at a piece of crap Hyundai Santa Fe, and frankly it ruined the drive experience for me ( and turned me way off buying the vehicle... hmmmm.... maybe I should thank him after all ).

Anyways, before I took off for my drive the dealer says, take her out and have fun. Dont worry about redline, infact make sure you hit it. Get her up to speed and try some hard cornering. Gotta say... thats a pretty untraditional sendoff.

I never actually got going that fast during my testdrive, as frankly I dont speed much anymore. Until last year I owned a Suzuki GSXR, and no matter how damned fast a car is... it just doesnt compare to a bike. Plus, I like my license and low insurance, thank you very much.

That said, I did speed... over and over again, without realizing it. In town, in 50km zones, I was doing 80 without a second thought and having to back off again. Im going to have to get used to the lack of speed sensation or im going to get tons of small tickets. I did however get into her on a highway onramp. I didnt care so much about speed moreso handling. So as im coming into the ramp I completely ignore the speedo and just keep pushing her to see if the wheels slip at all. NOTHING. The car gripped rock solid, didnt even think about losing traction. As im coming onto the highway, I notice my speed is about 140km/h. ON A FRIGGIN ON RAMP. The part that scares me is, like I said... it still had alot more room until it thinks about losing traction. This is perhaps the nicest gripping car ive ever driven. Only other bit of speeding I did was high speed highway passing, and thats frankly because, well... thats how I pass. Normal speed, nail it, then back to normal speed. Needed to make sure the car could handle that.

My first car was an 86 RX7. Ive gotta say... its come along way. I have a hunch that the older rotaries might be a bit beefier in the torque department, but handling wise... no friggin contest. Also, driving the RX8 is as close to the feeling of driving my sport bike as im likely to come in a car. Long linear powerbands with a high RPM limit is a feeling you get hooked on.

I am interested to know how go the handling is in the rain though. Pick up the car any day now, so I guess ill have my answer soon enough.

Many times the speed limiter is there beacuse of the stock tires that ship on a car. V rated tires are 149MPH, so cars that ship with V's will have 149-ish speed limiters. This is true of a lot of slower cars too- there are plenty of cars that can go 130-ish that have S rated tires and thus 112MPH speed limiters.

The 155MPH limit is a gentleman's agreeement between some of the German carmakers to avoid having actual governmental regulations passed.

Whenever I get to 140+ things start feeling a little flimsy but that's understandable at those speeds.
