Maybe that's because 5k = 100mph

But wow I can't fathom a salesman encouraging someone they've never met to pop 130 on a test drive on public roads. I never thought of car salesman being a job for adrenaline junkies but now that I think of it....

Ok, now we know why the RX-8 has engine problems.

Obviously not an 8 owner or probably an 85 y/o with an aversion to drive more than 10mph UNDER the speed limit. :p

They love to be driven fast but after the following has been done:
1) proper break-in procedure
2) engine warm-up

At least I wouldn't want to buy a car, which saw redline while in break-in period.

If I were not an 8 owner, I would not be concerned about somebody abusing a new RX-8.

Please, refrain from personal remarks in my address. IMHO this web site is for car enthusiasts discussing the car that they love and not pointing fingures at each other.

P.S. You can guess my age from my signature.

Me either .... sorry, but it was not clear that you were referring to the abuse of an improperly broke-in or cold engine.

Oops, I meant my handle. I am 26 :p You will never guess how many people use their age or the last two digits of the year they were born in their nicknames

Awww git off your high horse. Obviously you didn't get the tongue-in-cheek humor or the smilie at the end of that post.

BTW running the car at high speed does not equate to going beyond recommended break-in RPMs. I also believe by the time those folks have taken the car onto the interstate the engine should be properly warmed-up by then. While I do not condone highspeed driving I do look at the posts objectively and try not to judge people. You could use the same approach.

That's true that running the car at high speed does not equate to going beyond recommended break-in RPMs. However, if I am not wrong, the recommended maximum RPM for the break-in is 4,000, which is less than 70 mph.
And as somebody (RotaryGod?) mentioned it takes at least five minutes for a complete warm up of the rotary engine.

And, please, guys think before you post that you were going 100+mph on the RX-8 you bought yesterday or the day before. Too many people had their warranty voided because of so-called "abuse". The people from dealership are reading these boards too.

Just look at those guys with EVO's that got this warranty voided because of track days, MITS people were out looking. Plus with the warranty problems with Mits cars, no wonder they would rather not pay out for stuff like that.

Although I only read the first and last page of this thread, this is the kind of discussion that rekindles worries about my '8. It was at the dealer for over a year (I think) and had 600 miles on it when I bought it. I've put over 4500 mi on it now and have had no problems, (in fact it has used only a little over 1 qt of oil to date) but I always wonder what kind of abuse it endured before I rescued it!

glassetcher, thats why I like what my dealer did. The only thing my dealer did in fact that I like.

They have a demo model that I test drove, all cars for sale are undriven. The car im getting tomorrow has < 3 miles on it. Thank dog! I would almost feel violated thinking other people drove the car before me, especially people that dont understand the rotary.

Breakin period is all well and good, if the car you bought isnt already broken. Ive seen ( from past experience working at dealerships ) what kind of tools test drive a car. I would never buy a new car that wasnt, frankly, new. Otherwise, I would save the thousands of dollars and buy a used car. IMHO, a car aint new anymore after it hits 100 on the odometre.

That's exactly why I am so angry at people who drive the "new" car like that at the dealership. My car came with 490 miles on it. I don't think I will ever-ever buy a car, which has more than 2 miles on the odometer.

My bike had 0.7 miles when I bought it :p :p :p
I am so glad they cannot let you test ride a bike :p

I find it hard to stay below 150 kms/hr. At the legal speed of 100 kms/hr, driving the car is like walking in mud.

It really is an exercise in self control to keep the car at legal limits.

I was going way over the speed limit and then shot over 100 mph. I had no idea I was going so fast in tell I look at the speedometer and it read 132 I almost craped my pants. Man this car is awesome I can’t wait to get mine. After it was all done and I had to go back to my automatic 96 Camry I almost started to cry for the 8 I guess I will just have to wait a little more longer.
Sounds like you had a lot of fun.

I have got mine set up to run on road tracks, so I have been taking mine to 140mph on a regular basis. But to get to do it on a test drive must have been wild.

Not bad for a car a lot of people say is slow, huh.

Oh by the way, don’t let the grammar police get to you. It is clear they have nothing to do all day but to find fault in others to make themselves look better in their own mind. That is what small minded people do with their time.

If you get yourself an 8, you will have loads of fun.

Thanks for sharing your experience. :D

Question Thats Intersting

I have been working with Mazda Reps and the Dealership on getting mine track ready. They have been great. :D

The issues of Warranty have been when I make an upgrade to a non Mazda part like a racing clutch or air intake, those parts are not covered by the Mazda Warranty and rightly so.

Mazda seems to be going out of their to support my efforts to run Mazda products on the track.

I am attempting to get sponsoring as well. But then again, I also take the car in before a run on the track and immediately after the run on the track. Sort of like having a pit crew and they have been great.

I suppose they might handle things differently if I got the car race ready and did not let them know and attempted to get warranty work on parts that were warn due to track use. That is one thing I have never done and will never do is ask for warranty work on parts I use up on the track. I simple get the replacement part and the Mazda garage installs it for me.

Like I said, it has been great.

Amazing...

Wow, I didnt know soo many people go that fast on public roads. I cant really say anybody was wrong in doing this because I did 167 mph on my 04 Yamaha R6 at 4:00am on the Parkway.Yeah, Yeah I know, I was an "IDIOT" but I was by myself and nobody was on the road. If anything I would have just killed myself. Although I have done 110 in my 8 it cannot compare to some of you, 132, 140, etc. Thats crazy! God bless everyone! Lord know we need his blessing! HAHA

I took my Mazda Millenia S up to 135MPH on a recently resurfaced highway several years ago...it was a beautiful feeling

taking the 8 past that point doesn't seem hard at all...in a month I'm going with several guys on to a large stretch of private service roads that are kept in great shape...I'll take a video at whatever speed is reached

Really stupid and unsafe. You weren't on a closed test track. Have some respect for other people. Remember this - lots of salesmen don't know much about or care about cars - or people. They just want to get a sale. This means they'll do just about anything to get a sale. Any sales guy that encourages me to do something irresponsible won't get my business.

Well I've got 6 more months to go before I can afford getting an 8 but I do currently have a 90 RX7 GXL (NA) and I can tell you, some of you guys maybe a little over concerned about the engine - it does need to be warmed up but it's not a delicate. My car has 160K miles on it and it sees an autocross twice a month and the only thing that has consistently broken has been little plastic bits of the 15 year old interior and the stupid plastic radiator. And I have had this car over 130 mph in 4th gear so I'll go out on limb say the 8 can do that too.
Anyway I look forward to buying a nice used 2004 Nordic Green 6-spd RX-8 sometime in 2006.
