Test Drive

So I went to the dealer today to test drive an 8. The car was awesome btw. It was SO much better than my camaro. The car felt so damn smooth. Anyways. My question for my post. Does the 8 year 100k miles only come with certified mazda vehicles? Thats what the dealer said. I was under the impression it came with ALL cars as a factory warranty.

8yr 100K is only on the motor itself. Not the drivetrain or whole car. You can find more information here. www.racingbeat.com

Hi Eric.

Two assumptions: 1. You are in the USA; and, 2. You are looking at a Used Car.

The 'Factory Warranty' for 2005's to 2008's (the 1st Gen Cars) (early 2004's had some different terms) was as follows (from the Mazda US Website:

Warranty Information
  • Our 36-month/36,000-mile "Bumper-to-Bumper", no-deductible limited Warranty.
  • Our 60-month/60,000-mile “Powertrain Limited Warranty” (Please check your warranty information booklet for your specific vehicle's warranty information)
There are also warranties for listed emission control components and rust perforation. Check with a dealer for specifics.
In July 2008, the warranty on the engine of all '04 to '08 RX-8's was extended to 8 yrs / 100,000 miles. This covers the rotary engine core, rotary housing and internal parts, as well as internal seals and gaskets.

The above warranties apply to the first retail purchaser, and all subsequent owners. Check with a dealer for the 'in-service date' of a particular vehicle to see when the clock started running.

In addition, if a prior owner purchased a Mazda extended warranty package, it is probably transferable.

Now if you are looking at a "Certified Mazda Used Vehicle", they have some different additional warranty, including roadside assistance. I've found this brochure for you: http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/pdf/...o_brochure.pdf

Good luck in your search!

(Unfortunately for us who bought in prior years) Now is a very good time to buy a car, as the RX-8's seem to have depreciated quite heavily.

If the pervious owner purchased the extended warranty, check to make sure it's still on the car...I believe they can sell it back to the dealership for the pro-rated balance of the warranty cost? Not positive, but I think they can do that.

i reccomend doing a carfax on the car and go to the warranty page. If it has the 8yr 100k engine warrenty listed it has it. The car does not have to be certified i just purchased my 06 from a used dealer about 4 weeks ago and it has the extended warranty.

Edit: the only way it would not have it was if it was voided for reasons such as mods that were not mazda certified being put into the engine.

From reading his post, I'm not so sure he's looking for a used car. I think he might be looking for a new car and is surprised that the dealer says the 8y 100K only comes with certified preowned... At least that's how I interpreted it

I dont think i have ever heard of a certified NEW car. I mean dont you kinda expect that when purchasing a brand new car. Certified would mean that the used car can be trusted.

Yeah I was looking at a 2005 RX8. The dealer said the 8 year 100k miles ONLY comes if the rx8 is certified. That didnt sound right because I thought the warranty was a factory one that goes with the car as long as it has those specs.

Yes. I purchased my car used in 2004 with 4K miles and the original factory warranties were all transferred to me.

That being said you are out of the bumper to bumper and powertrain warranty. So if they are selling that to you that may be a nice feature. But do not buy an engine warranty from them. You get it for free.

Don't buy any aftermarlet car warrenty. Even from a dealer.

Very hard to collect. Turned down over 80% of the claims.

Yeah, keep in mind the 7yr 100k warranty they are probably selling is bumper-to-bumper. The 8 already has 8 year 100k core engine warranty, but not a bumper to bumper one.

Hope this helps.

from my experience, warranty things r pretty bad at dealers. I actually would try to avoid going to a dealer unless it's necessary that i go there. Don't know about Mazda, but when I took my '96 4Runner in for 'regular maintenance', my car came out worse than before, and we found that idiots in their service department spilled oil onto our brakes.

^ he is right, but like i said before the engine extended warranty may have been voided for some reasons such as mods and so on (most likely not but i would check if i were you)

Either have them get a hold of a mazda dealer (asssuming they are not one) or carfax the vehicle.

The dealer showed me a carcheck type thing. It wasn't carfax. How legit is that?

Eric.

If you take the VIN to the service department of the dealer, you can ask the service writer / service manager to look in the Mazda warranty computer.

They can tell you when the car was originally sold (the Warranty Start Date). They also will know what warranty work has been requested / done by prior owner(s). This will tell you if there are any outstanding recalls, and if anything major (like the engine) has needed service and at what mileage. They will also see if any warranty claims have been denied, and why. It's up to them what they tell you - so endear yourself!

You could do this at any dealer - not necessarily the one you are buying from.

I'm a bit surprised (well, not really) that their "Certified Used" deal is really a way to sell you an aftermarket warranty.

Opinions on aftermarket warranties are all over the place. I personally don't go for them, but if you are tight on budget, the Mazda one seems to have a good reputation as far as the coverages and getting stuff actually fixed. Components can be expensive to replace - ask those who have had steering rack, heater core, or transmission issues.

I don't know about relying on Carfax. Always make sure yourself that the car has not got signs of body repair, and the mileage matches the general wear of the car.

All in all, these are great cars, as long as you are willing to be a knowledgable owner. This forum is a great resource! (By your Join Date and # of posts, you already know this.)

G/luck.
