ok, i went to the dealer in Owensboro today, and test drove an RX-8. there were some things that happened that concerned me.
1) the lady salesman asked me if i could drive a manual transmission since thats all they had. first thing that went through my head was she doesnt want me to kill the engine, and cause a potential flooding problem.
2) the salesman that waited on me told me he was going to get it warmed up for me, take it around the block a couple of times.
3) when he started it, there was a brief but funny sound from the engine. sort of a "Whoosh" type sound, if you know what i mean. of course, the temps were in the 30s last night, so perhaps that played into this.
4) during our test drive the salesman said he never heard of flooding issues. i thought to myself "WHAT???" he said something about fouled plugs, or women drivers not knowing how to drive the car.
thoughts anyone? #3 probably concerned me the most. and it almost sounded to me like the salesman wasnt being completely honest with me. but the car was beautiful, fast, and quick! if it wasnt for the concerns about the engine i would definitely buy the RX-8!

If you have ANY concerns about the motor, the salesman not being up-front, or random 'whoosh sounds - don't buy it.
quite a machine,
ran smooth,
responsive,
loved the interior,
very nice machine.
and the owner's wife was pretty sexy too!....will haunt you forever, if you buy an '8.

could be the air pump . It is an emissions device - makes a high pitched vacuum cleaner type noise .

Go to a different dealership. I remember one place was offering a great deal on a Velocity Red 8, but when they pulled it up, it was CAKED with dirt and grime, plus it ran sort of lumpy and sounded funny. We ran to another dealership, payed just a bit more, but got an 8 that was nearly perfect through entire span of my lease.
Though, with your sound, it could just be normal. Rotaries sound quite odd and vacuum-y (like Brettus said) compared to piston engines.
You get the driving stick question with a lot of dealerships and for all kinds of cars. They just don't want someone busting up the gearbox as they try and figure out how to drive stick via a test drive.
Anyway, if a deal doesn't feel good, it probably isn't good. Go elsewhere, try another one.
