test drove rx-8

i just test drove the rx-8 a few day ago at my local mazda dealer. love the car's interior, very roomy in the back (at least compared to my 03 tiburon), and looks greater in person than it does in pictures. i actually stalled in it but i dont think the dealer noticed. haha.

I test drove one again yesterday. But this is the odd thing...he said to let the car idle "DOWN" for a minute before shut-off.....but everyone else on this forum says to rev the car to around 4,000rpms before shut off.

Wonder if the sales guy I went on the test drive with didn't know as much as he should on the car?

uh dont rev the car on shuttof.

That'll dump a load of fuel into the engine just when your switching off the ignition...

Maxda short trip/warm up says rev it to 4k a bit once its warmed up some before you switch off, but not WHEN you switch off.

Actually, rev to 4K, take foot off throttle and turn off ignition while engine is RPM is dropping.

When did it become 4k? The getting started guide says 3k for 10 seconds, return to idel, turn off.

If the engine is warm, just shut it off from idle like any other engine.

I have 13k miles on my RX-8 and I just shut it off. I don't let it idle down, or rev it up. I never had a flooding issue AND I have started it up, backed it out of the garage (to wash it) and then shut it off.

The weather here in Florida never really gets too cold (with the exception of a few days in the winter) so I don't think the flooding problem is an issue. This time of the year no one in the states should have any flooding issues, as it should really only be a COLD start problem when it is cold.

The manual appaers to be wrong. The latest I've seen appears to say rev to 4k and shut down down at that rpm?

Now I get it!

Brought my wife to the dealer to get her a Miata. Made a deal on a leftover new '03 SE - nice car.

Finished the deal and thet said they needed an hour for prep. I say ok - we need to get some dinner anyway. I'm going to be looking at an 8 in December, so how about I take one to dinner?

Sure - no problem - 6 speed or auto? 6 speed of course!

Now I understand! I hadn't gone a half mile when I turned to my wife with a stupid grin on my face and said "this is a heck of a car!"

After dinner off to the backroads...out one street onto a deserted looooong stetch...watching the road and winding it up...BEEEEP...wife "what is THAT?" me...another big stupid grin..."rev limit warning"....her "how fast are you going?"....me "umm..not too fast"

I'm hooked, but gotta wait til December. Meantime, I'll have some fun with her Miata!

Hey jkang5 - Don't trade in the tibby for an 8. I recently read somewhere that the tibby was far superior to the 8 - LOL.

The old rules were "rev to 3k for x seconds idle down and then shut off". I was at my local dealer recently and they had newly arrived cars with transport instructions that read "rev to 4k for 10 seconds and turn off ignition at 4k and let engine spin down" or something similar. It would really be nice if mazda/mazdausa offered electronic versions of thier manual with automatic updates, such as the new warning about the tires not being appropraite for winter conditions-my manual did not say so and I actually debated the issue. Luckily I lisented to Gords repeated warnings and got a winter set-up.
