ummm, it shouldnt stink cause its a new car??? what does that mean??? Other than that 'new car smell' of gule and plastic inside, it shouldnt make any strange smells...

are you sure it was the car, and not another car/something around you?

Maby there was something wrong with the car, or you were burning up the clutch if it was a manual.

This is exactly why I asked my rx8 to be crate shipped, because they wanted to offer me one with 100 km's already driver, I refused because I knew some punk test driver was going to redline it and rip it around!

well the first part is a matter of opinion, IMO redlining any car with only 2 miles on it is pretty bad, but that doenst matter, just dont buy THAT rx8, lol

as far as the smell, i alwasys break my car in, this is also the first time I ever had a brand new car, with 1 mile on it when I got it, I didnt redline it till 2000miles, right after my first oil change.

As far as a smell ive never smelled anything.......

what did it smell like? my guess would be if you redlined it in one gear and then shifted (at redline) you slipped the clutch a little bit, its easy to do, I HATE the stock clutch in this car, I like a heavy clutch

I got mine with 12 miles on it, and it had a slight burning oil "stink" for the first couple hundred miles. Mostly while stopped at a light, and only when windows were open or vent was set to outside. Not real strong - but just noticable. It went away after a couple hundred miles. Never a problem since (at 30K miles now). Service techs said it was normal.

I think mine had like 30 miles on it when I bought it. And I had that smell too. It didin't have to be when I drove it on the highway, and I never redlined it or even ran it hard until I broke it in, and I still had that smell.

I even had the light blue smoke coming out of my exhaust. It went away as soon as I hit like 125 miles.

This should've been posted on the "The little things" thread. That stink is the RX-8 thoughtfully releasing a strong car odor to cover up for you when the sensors detect that you've farted.

There is wax in the engine to help break-in. That is why it smells funky.

First time I've heard that one...

There are always oils present during any engine assembly that can get onto the block surfaces (housing), exhaust, etc. In addition, the gaskets used along with sealants are still new. Once you get it up to a higher temp, these items (almost all are petroleum based) will smoke slightly and emit a strong odor. This is what you smell and is nothing to be concerned about. In addition some people claim that some sort of engine protection is sparyed on some engines before shipping to help prevent corrosion. Wax to help it break in, no.

i think the wax he is talkng about is just the special coating sprayed onto the rotor/housing to help break the engine in...as you mentioned
