Is there a chance for our 8's become a collectors car?

Too many made, and too much of a daily driver practical car for it to reach anywhere near the status of the FD. This is basically mazda's most massive rotary production car in US. I think they sold more rx8s in 2004 then they may have sold FDS in total. They have force fed this car, which is why there are so many deals out there. For it to have any future colector stautus, production needs to stop now. I'm not even sure my S2000 will ever have that status, and they make and sell about 3-5 times less per year as they do the RX8. I do think production for the RX8 is finally starting to match the demand. They made so many 04 models, it's not even funny. I'll still never forget that day I saw 85 of them lined up at the local dealership parking lot, and when I searched for car in June of 2004 it rendered me like 900 of them selling within a 50 mile radius. If course if Mazda were to create a limited pure high performance rotary in the near future, you can wipe out any chance at this being a desired collectable.

If you look at a lot of cars that are considered collector cars today, it is very different from even 5 years ago. We can thank Speed Channel and their coverage of Barrett Jackson for that, as well as all the baby boomer money for that. Cars that 5 years ago would be lucky to fetch 50k at auction now get four times that amount becuase thru technology and exhaustive searching they have found that out of 2k built in 1969, only a couple hundred exist today and out of that only a handful are genuine rare option cars, or the matching number hemi four speed painted "Plum Crazy". You get two guys in a room with more money than brains and you have a super high dollar car since both of them want it. Now in another 5 to 10 years when all of these people can't drive, or pass on, you are going to have all of these "collector" cars reappear with a different demographic and they may no longer be considered collectable. It is a very cyclical business and will continue to be that way.
If a 7 can do it a 8 might, but depends upon future production of current design.
Reason, It's a unique Rotary engine

BTW-I rode in a then-NEW 1989 GTU in college a few times. I loved that freakin' thing, until I saw another friend's totally restored 1969 240Z. I got a Z shortly after that...
