Not something you have to do very often. Years ago they'd check that (and the rear end, same way) as part of a grease job and/or oil change. I wonder if anyone still does.

There should be a "check" hole, above the fill hole, at least that's how it was on my RX-7's tranny. You can put your finger in there, and you should be able to very lightly dip your finger in there and touch some tranny to check it's consistency. There is no real reason to check the fluid, as it's hard to leak it without knowing.

As cited, manual transmissions don't have dipsticks as they don't 'consume' fluid to any great degree. Automatic transmissions need to be topped up as the gear shifting is "fluid linked."

Ditto - manual transmissions don't have dipsticks. You check the oil level by removing the fill plug on the side of the transmission, and sticking your finger in.

For general wear and aging, you can see if the oil is still its original light translucent color or if it's turned black. Or you can see if it's foamy. Back when it was routine to check gearbox and rear end oil level, the rear end oil in my wife's AMC Hornet once turned up foamy. No drain hole, just a fill/check hole, so I had to use a syringe to suck the old oil out.
As long as you can get a little oil on your fingertip, you can make some judgement about its condition. If you can't get any on your fingertip, you've got a good indication that the level is low.
