Thinking about an 8
#30
My personal opinion...you are going to need to really love the car. You will need to get a new engine (it will most likely break down). Especially if you are looking at a car in the 04-06 range with 40k mileage. Chances are you will be on your 2nd engine when purchasing it. Even though the warranty is extended 8 yrs/100k mileage it does take more care than a standard piston engine. So just be mindful of that happening. Doesn't always. I don't recommend an A/T either, but people already beat that horse.
Listen, for similar prices you can probably get a car that doesn't have as many engine issues, flooding, low compression, etc. Maybe the 06's are better, I don't know. You really need to want it, and take care of it, no exceptions, otherwise you will hate the car and regret it.
I'll sell you my 8 (6sp though).

There are probably close to 30+ RX8's here in the valley which vary in years and drivers. Many of us are still on the factory motor and transmission. There is no for sure reasoning to suggest that you WILL get a new motor and that it WILL break down.
My RX8 has left me stranded twice and both times it was my own fault. Never has my car left me on the side of the road because of an issue that wasn't of my own doing. The same could be said of any vehicle. If you neglect it sooner or later it will bite you.
The RX8 is simply a car that has more needs than a basic sedan. It's not a car that you just jump into and drive for thousands of miles without care for how it's running. If you are not someone who knows their way around under the hood then yes I would think carefully.
The RX8 is not a car that requires daily wrenching or even serious amounts of time to understand. It requires that you service your car only at dealerships or shops familiar with the rotary engine, it takes specific parts and it's best if you understand basics of the motor to better aid in preventing issues.
Good fluids are important and making sure that you drive the car how it was designed.
Otherwise, it's a great experience to own one and a blast to drive daily.
