Thinking about selling my 68 Chevelle for a Rx8 need some help
Btw i live like 45 mins west of philadelphia
Hey so im about to go to college in the fall and im going to need a more practical driver. Right now this is what i am driving.
1968 Chevelle 4 speed 331small block chevy(327 bored .30) approx 350hp, It ran a 13.2 qrt mile
it has a 3.73 12 bolt rear, all with A/C
I get an average of 8 mpg(not driving fast either) and carberated, as much fun as this is and how ive always been into Muscle cars since i can remember i need a more reliable Daily driver that i dont have to stop at every gas station i see...
I have a couple questions.
1st-What is the gas milage for a turbo Rx8 and there hp ratings, it seems like people dont get the best gas milage for these cars and thats ahrd to belive
2-is there any problems with the rotary motors, I know alot about a small block chevy but the rotary motor is like greek to me
3- is there any problems with a turbo kit on these cars do they get better or worse gas milage, i know with a small block you usually get 2mpg better if not more.
4- These cars are differnt then what im used to is there any useful info i can get about them or experiences ive been looking in your for sale section I want to find a turbo version or atlease a very nice n/a one. and it has to be m/t i wont drive an auto.. Ment buy one that already has a turbo, i woudlnt even dare try that myself, and only reason i want to get a turbo one is because i want a car with power, but i dont need to get a turbod one a n/a qould do just fine if there better.

but you were talking about Quarter mile and mpg. both of them are not so great on Rx-8.
Rx-8 is a sports car, not muscle car. so its 1/4 not gonna be great, like mid to high 15s. and mpg .... which sports car actually get good mpg ? For me its about maybe 14 mpg, NYC traffic, 90% city driving.
I will not even think of buying a already turbo'ed Rx-8. Cuz you have no idea how did they install the turbo, was it tuned properly, maintenance properly, etc.
If you like the styling and stuff. I suggest you to test drive one yourself first before making any decisions.

Already on it Theres a mazda dealership im going to next sat Hopefully long as we dont get snow i was going to go this weekend but theres still some snow on the ground...

well, if thats the case go ahead and give it a spin.
but if u're buying new, stock tires are summer and from your words it sounds like u will get snow in ur area, so u might want to add the snow tires cost into your bill as well.

Paying cash is not new.
My friend's friend paid 100 something K for a Mercedes, brand new, he just got a case of money and pay it off at once. even the dealership was shock that he actually has so much cash on him.

Why pay cash for a car when they will loan you money on it at a lower interest rate than what an investment will yield?
Your buddy screwed himself out of about $10,000 pocketable difference PER YEAR!!!!!

im kinda (was 99% but google maps kinda destroyed it) sure i recognize that gas station. is that right off route 29, on old columbia pike?
he might be talking about that white turbo rx8 another person mentioned. but we all told that guy to go for it. so if he followed our advice, its already sold.
if all of the above is true, then he lives in maryland.
also a few points:
he is going to get what is great gas mileage coming from a 8mpg 60s v8
he is going to think the car has tires made of glue
i dont think a turbo changes the gas mileage (18-20mpg) if you stay off the boost
you will need snow tires. a set of cheap rims and bridgestone blizzaks is the way to go
you will save more money not buying another car
but the reliability is the real reason i bought my car (my previous car was an unreliable pos)
car has been really great. no problems.
try to get the dealer to warranty the turbo. (hey, its worth a shot)
dont listen to the haters. they sound like broken records on their "the rx8 is not a drag car blahlbahlbhablah nothing new to say same old haterade" if you like the 8, go for it.

rgl, you'd have to be really savvy to get a 10k/year out of a diminishing set of money. this has been gone over many times. the only real point to get a loan to buy a car is to use mazda's financing with large rebates and not tell them anything about how you are paying for it. then, when you get the rebates etc, send the entire amount in the mail next month.
also, most people/dealers would not accept 10k+ in cash. they get really suspicious. also, the fbi would pay you a visit. dealers/loan companies alert the fbi if someone pays with that amount of money in cash. i paid my car with "cash," as in, a cashiers check. but pretty much the same thing without all the bling. sadly. i wanted pictures of all the hundreds.

Saturday im just going to go to a cpl dealerships, im looking at a 04 Evo, a 04 gto, 02 ws6 trans am, and trying to find a nice 04 or 05 rx8 i wish i could finda dealership with a nice turbo rx8 used.
I love the rx8s looks the most and something about a high revving tuner i like but i really want a turbod car if i get rid of my v8, i love the blow off valvs
But anyways can anyone give me what to look for in a turbo rx8, pros, cons, specs anything that i can read up on and help me with my search

But the only people I have seen pay cash for cars either bought a cheap car, where the difference in insurance would make up for it. . . or they are just SO rich (beyond filthy rich) that it does not matter.

And yes, I have seen cars paid for with cash in bills. However, the buyer paid just less than $10,000 a day and completed the transaction over a few days.
Of course, the purpose of the thread wasn't about sales transactions, so all I can say is from my own personal experience, I once knew a guy that went from torque monsters to the RX-8 and after the initial new car honeymoon wore off, he wasn't too happy with his car. Also, since you're going off to college, I'd really suggest something more akin to a beater. College is hard on cars, you'll have plenty of friends bumming rides, and parking situations are often disastrous. In college I had a car that I didn't care hugely about and I was probably better for it.

2. That was reported to the IRS anyway. No matter how they try to get around it . . . the IRS gets a filing from the dealer. One car sale, one transaction. more than $10,000, the IRS knows

if you have the money to throw around then a turbo is going to be better than the stock as far as basic grunt goes, the mpg will decrease if you drive it hard, but if you just take it easy I don't think your gas mileage will be too much different from the already crappy mpg. I have gotten 15mpg in just city driving with some revving mixed in. but if you cruise on the highway you can hit the low 20s.
Think of the rotary engine kinda like a high performance crotch rocket engine, it needs revs to show it's true colors, drop below around 5k and it'll feel like a normal high-ish powered car. You may or may not like the exhaust note either if you're used to V8s, altho the turbine sound of the engine plus the sound from the turbo itself makes a very interesting combination. The engine is also relatively high-maintenance in regards to the amount of time you'll spend checking the oil and other things compared to a V8 you can mostly just not think about.
Take that test drive and see how you feel, remember this is a handling car, not a straight-liner.
look for an 05 or newer if you're getting N/A so you still have factory warranty when you first buy it. You can turbo it if you want afterwards. If you're looking for an already turboed I just suggest you get the compression checked and see if you can find out who did the tuning and ask around about them (here is a good place). Unless it's done right the turbo mod can blow a rotary in very short order.

How can you sell a Chevelle?????? Keep it and get a beater for school - my first car was a 1968 Mustang GT - which I sold..... I regret it every day since....

doesnt matter how low the interest rate is you still paying extra money for what you buying.
alot of my friends i know pay cash to buy cars, including my own family.
if you complaining that your chevy gets 8MPG dont even think about turbo rx8. the best car for you is a wrx. since your area snows, you are better off with a AWD car , also is turbo and is very fast.

I skipped down in the thread so I'm not sure if this was said but check out zoomzoom_8's car. It's a black turbo 8 that's hooked up pretty damn nice (I love the PTP gauge setup). Last I checked he was asking 21k... I think.

As someone who's previous car was a modified 94 Trans Am, take a serious look at the ws6 or the gto. You'll miss the torque of a V8. I love the style of my RX-8, but miss the power. Plus the ws6 and gto probably get better or at least the same gas mileage.
The reason I chose the RX-8 over the two was I've already had a Trans Am before and the gto is too plain looking. I didn't even consider Mitsubishi, Subaru, etc. because of how plain and/or ugly they look.
Test drive an 8 and consider whether the style is enough to satisfy you without the power. For me it was. Next time though I'm going V8, but not anytime soon.

Is a beautiful piece of history that becomes more and more of a collector every day that passes. Keep it, buy a beater for college commuting and break that betty loose on weekends. Man you are lucky to have that car. I would be broke turning that thing into a 12 second beast....would shake the earth from the launch.
