The thread that noone likes to start (Rear Ended by truck)
I had hoped I wouldn't get to post this.
My car was exactly 2 years old (purchased 9/16) and showed 24,999 miles. Got rearended, not by a whimpy F-xxx pickup, but one of the Ford Econoline series (350?). A plumber decided to run through me, probably on the way to fix some urgent toilet problem.
The trunk got pushed in and the bumper and quarter panels are broken. Looks like the side panels are not damaged. Trunk cover could be ok too. The rear doors are still aligned properly as you can see on the pictures, so I hope no frame damage.
It still drives straight in a line when I take the hands off the steering wheel (80 mph, over 10 seconds), so is that another reason to hope for no frame damage?
The trunk doesn't close of course.
Also are there any parts that I could upgrade where I only would have to pay the difference to the standard Mazda part? I cannot think of any but I don't know the market.
-Peter

Last pictures, promise
The good thing is, the bumper was damaged from a hit-and-run on the lot at work and that's why I had the bumpersticker there. It will *look* better than before.
The last picture shows 'The other Guy'.
I think it's a good construction, how the bumper and rear panel absorbed all the energy and the side panels got nothing. That truck had a solid steel bumper, of course.

Kinda off topic, but why put an anti/pro anything controversial on your car? I would never want to put anything on my car that would make it a risk for getting keyed by some idiot who felt different than I did.
In fact, maybe thats why the plumber hit you. :p

I think mazda should research and develop a reverse polarity anti collision force field that blasts the oncoming vehicle back in the opposite direction when within a couple of inches your RX8,....that would be cool.....

Looks Minimal. Probably, Bumper cover, and bumper. It takes less than an hour to replace. I would have your body shop paint the bumper cover off the car, and then put it on myself with a friend. There are instructions on this site.

It's amazing how well your car held up while getting hit by that rather large truck. I think the impact wasn't too big - maybe he slowed down significantly by the time he hit you.
Not sure what parts can you upgrade while not paying more than stock - however, seeing what ridiculous price the dealer would ask for a stock exhaust, I bet you could get a Racing Beat or Borla for close to that. Claim that it was damaged beyond repair![Smilie](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I like your bumper sticker

Well the sticker went there because of a hole (!) in the bumper after a hit and run.
The specific sticker also represents my beliefs although is a bit dated. I won't migrate the sticker to the new bumper.
I think the plumber was absent-minded, probably on the cell phone.

I estimate $2500 alltogether; just my feeling. Will go to the body shop right now.
Someone said something about Racing Beat exhausts, hm, I cannot see that my exhaust system got damaged but I'll find out in the next hours. Thanks for all feedback.

As said before the sticker really served a purpose. Covered damage.
I'm back from the 2 shops I checked out. One wants to replace the luggage lid latch and the rear body panel.
The other one wants to bent the panel into shape and thinks that the latch is still "ok".
That leads to $2080 versus $1630 for their first estimate. The numbers might go up as they inspect what's behind the bumper.
Oh, and shop #1 would keep the car for 10 business days, while shop #2 needs only 3-4 days. What?

wow, that makes you the third BB 8 to get rear-ended in the past 3 weeks. looks like were catching up to the "curse of the silver". i just got my car back last wed. from the body shop. my new bumper was about $710 and it took about 2 days. at least i got my tsb's and recalls taken care of. at least you're ok, too bad about your 8 though

Ptiemann,
so glad you started this thread. Same thing happened to me this afternoon. however, the car that rear ended me was slighly smaller, a Dodge Minivan. I'm glad to say that she got the worse of it. I can't see any damage to the quarters, but, but the entire bumper cover assembly is pushed in several inches. Just like you, doesnt seem be any frame damage, though I feel a slight difference in the exhaust vibration.
I was also trying to think of what mods I might do while having it fixed. The only thing that comes to mind is removing the logos and emblems from the trunk. If any one has ideas, please post them. Thanks!

Car ready, sort of
I picked my 8 up yesterday, looked great, well, they had washed/ waxed/ polished it.
When I parked it home I noticed a LOT of condensation in the tail lights. Even though there was no visible crack both are completely fogged up.
The shop will have to order new tail lights and replace mine.
Make sure that your lights are still sealed (water proof or whatever) after the replacement.
P.S.:
my rear panel was pushed in about 6 inches as well, I saw the old one and was surprised.
