Tint Preference?

I picked up my brand new '06 Black RX-8 last week, and have already put ~500 miles on it! This car is just too much fun to drive, and puts a grin on my face everytime

First mod I am looking at is a tint job. I was wondering what everyone's preference on tint type and % was. My previous Celica GT-S was sporting 50% on the side windows and 30% in the rear, semi-metallic. I am thinking about doing 30% all around with charcol (non-metallic) instead. The semi-metallic tint seems to have a silver color to it, which may not look as sleek with a black RX-8....

Any opinions would be appreciated!! thanks guys --

I have 5% black tint all the way around. It looks cool, but sucks reversing at night. I'm considering mounting a small foglight somewhere, cause sometimes I can't see jack.

In Texas anything less than 35% is illegal. 35% is nice, compared to not having anything, but in my opinion, I think it's too light.

only 500 in a week i ran 1000 my frist week...im on my third week and i got 2500 ....man dunno where all the miles have gone

well i went with 50 in the rear and 30 on the sides i think cuz thats border line illegal here in texas. so i dunno i would go darkest possible with out getting in trouble. the most important is you do it at a good place w/ a lifetime gaurantee maybe?. cuz if there are bubbles it will look horrible

50% is the lowest you can go legally in Minnesota, so I am sure some Highway Patrol would chase me down for anything less than 20%! lol

hmm.. tint shop here ($190 for install & they offer a lifetime guarantee) said the semi-metallic(silver looking) is better for reflecting heat in the summer and is more durable??

Not to play Devil's Advocate here but who cares what MN law says. In California it is illegal to have ANY tint on the front windows but if you drive around....everyone's got it.

I went with 5% in the back and 20% up front. Let me go find a pick of my black...

I've got 15% sides & back. Looks good, but you'd have to have a 20% & 15% right next to each other to see the difference, and it would not be very noticable. +1 to what Jedi said - most of the states have some law against but rarely enforce it. Unless you do something else to get in trouble, you prlly won't have any issues. Check w/others in your area to see if they get hassled.

Oh, and nice color choice!

Now, let me see if I can find any pics . . .

Just ignore the wheel edit, turns out I don't have the original pic on my work drive. But you get the idea.

I'm thinking of getting 20% on the sides and 5% on the back. Has anyone tinted the front windshield? Heh.. I have a VR btw..

Jedi and dmc both of those look awesome! front tint is illegal in il also, and it totally depends on the cop. some give you a ticket just because they want to be a dick.
I am trying to decide what percentages I will do also. I had 30/20 front back on a g6, but you could see through the back and sides still farely easily. may need ot be darker.

IMO - tinting the front is just a bad idea. It looks ok, but that's much more likely to get you pulled over. Plus, at 15% my visibility is reduced when backing up at night - why would you take the risk that your visibility takes a hit going forward??!!

And the tint makes any color look better. It fills in the clear space nicely, not to mention the postitve effects when it comes to big *** suv's and such behind you at night.

^ tks. & tint on ANY windows is illegal here in RI.

I need to ask Jedi how bad it gets when reversing at night with 5% tints.. Which I wanted to add to the back also.

it was a pain at times with 20%
even worse in the rain imo. right now that is why i am hesitant to go to 5% in the back

35% (considered "medium" at the place I went with) all the way round. I dislike the limo back, light front look.

I have what they consider 17% (not sure how they figure that but anyway) and it looks great - especially on a black car. you can not see the person in the car - at certain angles you can see a shadow. The only issue is backing at night - I have to roll the window down and use my outside mirror

It definitely took a little getting used to but it's actually not all that bad. Definitely worth it on those HOT days.

+1. That's what I have and I love it. Before I used to go limo in the rears and 20% up front. I think that if you use the same all the way around, it looks alot cleaner. Plus, I have the JDM b-pillars--similar to the shinka piano black pillars--and it matches 20% nicely. Not too dark at night or in the rain, but dark enough so I can leave my wallet on my front seat and you couldn't see it if my sunroof is closed.

Jedi/dmc/kwescott -- nice rides, and thanks for the pics! (Ya gotta love a clean black car!) Do you know what kind of tint did you got? black/charcol/smoke, or a metallic variety?

30% all-around is sounding pretty good right now... especially since those light "sand" colored leather seats might stand out through the tint

lol -- first week of driving the car up here in MN... -10, and -39 with wind chill. At that temp, the body creaks a fair amount on the occasional bump or turn. ;-)

I got non-metallic so as to not interfere with the Navigation. (some members had issues with metallic tint + nav)
As for the brand, I know it was a major brand name but I"d have to check my paperwork at home.

I've got limo tint in the back and no tint in front windows.
In michigan I can't have tints in the front windows.... I tryed twice, and I got pulled over twice with tickets!!....
Luckly, I had to take them off and they waived them..... I'm not going through that crap again.... I am not lucky when it comes to tinting my car
