ok, so, im not a pro, but i have run a 14.4 (ok ok, enough bragging)
hold down the DSC button for 7 seconds to make sure everything is off.
i launched at 4500 rpm and quickly feathered the clutch out. i.e. rode the clutch. a respected member (at least i respect him highly ) of this community recommends launching at 7k. but then again, he races with R-comps, so he has much better traction.
shift as close to 9300 rpm as you can get it. hold the beep for a bit. dont shift as soon as you hear it. i try to shoot for 9300 rpm because the fuel cut off is at 9500 rpm and if you hit it you'll bog down.
also, try to shift as quickly as possible. when you are shifting you are not accelerating, you are coasting. you want acceleration.
and it sucks, but you do have to shift to 4th. i tried to ride 3rd totally out once, i made it within 40 feet of the finish line then ran into the fuel cut off and ended up with a 87mph trap speed and a 15.4ish. haha.
also, if you have over 25k miles you should replace your plugs and coils. even if they seem fine.

My tip is... GET A DIFFERENT CAR.
Why would you do quarter mile racing in an 8? That's not what it's made for. It doesn't do it well. It's made for corner carving and handling. It's excellent at that. It's one of the best at that. Why anyone would wanna destroy it trying to get straight line quarter mile runs out of it is beyond me. You're wasting it. Get yourself a different car for that. If your goal is quarter mile racing, you've got the wrong car.

any car been a drag car it depends on how you build it so cut the crap about the cornering ive seen frickin geos at the strip. i talked to a rotory tech about running a little 110 oct and that seems to do a little you can run about 2 gallons safely. but really the 8 can be a good drag car look at it! its light rwd n pretty easy to work on.

thanks for the advise kersh4w, and everyone else. I always find myself just short of crossing the line and having to make the decision whether or not to shift into fourth. i don't, so im hoping when i do my times will drop into the high 14s. ill try out both the launching rpms. the 7000 and the 4500 feathering the clutch.

B) There are no stock RX-7s anymore.
C) They can do LSx/20B swaps, big single turbo conversions, and run stupid boost with race gas.
RX-8s can drag race, anything on wheels can drag race including my Geo Prizm. If you are doing it for fun and you enjoy it, go for it, who cares what anybody else thinks. Just be realistic about your target numbers... even modified I wouldn't expect any ETs lower than high-mid 14s with an RX-8.
One thing I've realized since getting my Evo is that every car has a compromise. No car can be the best at every type of driving. Getting an Evo to the 9 second range isn't particularly hard, and in your average street encounter they eat up more powerful cars because of AWD. That same benefit becomes a weakness beyond that point though because the drivetrain just goggles up your power. If you want an ET faster than 9 seconds you really want to look at a RWD car with a huge V8. Then you start getting into ranges that you simply cannot hit with a streetable car. One of my good friends is a professional drag racer in the Pro Mod Doorslammer classes. Last year he set the national record for 10.5 Pro Mod class with a 748ci Chevy v8 in a tube frame chassis with 4-stage nitrous pushing ~2000 whp. That car isn't making any damn turns.
So if you are comfortable competing against your best time and having fun, take kersh's advice about shift points etc, and good luck.
