New one of course!
Seriously if you are comfortable buying a used car and prepared to deal (and pay if out of warranty) with any issues that may come up, used is a great option. But I think it has to be a really good deal on a low miles car or really cheap high mileage car, otherwise a few more grand can get you in a brand new one with the incentives and finance offers available. You get the warranty, the updates and you have some control over avoiding costly repairs by looking after it. Checking/adding oil is so important in this car, that not know how well this was done on a used car (really how would you really know, you need to take someone's word for it) concerned me a bit. I started looking at used ones, but looking at my budget I decided I could spend a little more and get it new, and it was worth it to me.
Just look at your budget, how long do you intend to keep it (you will take that depreciation hit with a new car) and how comfortable you are buying used. Many are happy doing it both ways, it just needs to work and make sense to you. Its a great car regardless.
just some to tempt you a little more

on a related note, i'm torn between a used gt and a new sport. i'd love a new gt, which would be a bit harder to pull off, but at least in terms of the differences between the two trims, would it be worth the new-car feel (which i'm big on, by the way) to get a lower trim-level like that or what?

The 2009 may hold its value better in the long run because the production numbers were so low, although in the short run you'll take a pretty big hit in resale. Look at the values of clean 1995 Rx-7's (all of which were twin turbo) versus clean 1993. Or compare 1991 turbo Rx-7's values versus 1987 turbo Rx-7's. Also, the new oil metering pump may significantly increase engine life over say an 04 that went through a gazillion PCM calibrations.
You will have much less risk of something going wrong if you get a 2009. That to many people is worth a lot of money. The 1993 model Rx-7's had a lot more little bs problems with them and that's one of the reasons why they are worth less than the 1995's which are very rare.

The RX-8 seems really popular in Houston compared to other place I've driven I think because most affordable sports cars are roadsters which aren't practical in our climate. Coupes are much more reasonable.
