Too extreme a response??

Since we're discussing this on a car forum, I think it's safe to say that we're all car enthusiasts here... your typical gum-popping SUV driving soccer mom is over at MarthaStewart.com looking at window treatments.
What we automotive devotees fail to grasp sometimes is that we are in the minority. The vast majority of drivers (using that term very loosely) regard an automobile, whether it's their own or someone else's, as merely a transportation appliance -- and occasionally a park bench, door stop, or handy grocery shelf. It would never occur to these clods that sitting on a car, hitting a nearby car with their own car door, or setting their purse, grocerybag, or small child on the hood or trunk of a car is not OK. They are ignorant, not necessarily malicious.
Intent aside, though, their thoughtless actions still cause scratches or worse in our pristine paint jobs. I applaud galleychief's reaction, and I only wish he could have explained to that clueless bimbo and whoever she was talking to WHY he reacted the way he did. She still, to this day, has no inkling why what she did was wrong.

I came out of a bar once when I had my old 88 Jetta, it was awesome, anyways there were two guys sitting on the hood of my car. They needed a place to sit while the smoked because their buddy in the SUV parked next to me wouldn't let them smoke in his truck. I lost it, big time, especially when they told me to chill out its just an old shitty volkswagen.

I think I would have looked inside the bag first. If it was eggs and messy food, I would have thrown it at her SUV. If it contained cans, I would have beaned HER with it. If it was candy and stuff, it would have been mine
Nothing teaches a better lesson than a smack upside the head. :D
I know most people are not enthusiasts, hell most people aren't even responsible drivers/owners. They don't take care of THIER cars, not even a yearly wash. Don't take them in for service..., the number of squelling cars with smoke pouring out the exhaust..., it's staggering down here. I'm not surprised that lady didn't have any respect for someone elses property.

Aratinga and others hit it right on. . . I don't feel bad about the bag, I enjoyed that part :D , I feel bad that I didn't stop and give her a lecture about respecting OPP. But looking back, she would not have understood my passion and would only be thinking about the broken jar of mayo. And then she would yell and I would yell, and people would stare, and I'd end up being the bad guy. Better to just bite my tongue and drive away.

I think you did the right thing. You didn't say anything and let your actions speak for themself. Next time maybe she'll put down the phone. Put her bags on the ground and be considerate of others hard earned posessions. BRAVO! I, sir, applaud you!

since others are sharing their storys, ill share mine ...
The other day i come back to my miata (parked outside Cheesecake Factory) in an up-scale part of town. It was a sunny day so I had the top down, and I was only there for lunch, so about 1.5 hrs. I find 2 nice cigarett holes, one burned into the headrest of each seat.
Who does that???
The car was visible to me from inside, but i wasnt keeping an eye on it the whole time, and im use to it getting lookers (rollbar, race seats...ect, it draws some attention).

I'm torn between whether I would have just dipped out with her **** on my trunk and let it fall off or if I would have grabbed it as I walked by and casually hopped into my car and thrown it into the passenger seat...I'm not a confrontational person, so I definitely would try and do it as stealthily as possible, I'm just not sure which route I would have taken.

i would have lost it..the second i saw those bags touch my car the panic would have been set off. Then i would have shut it off if they were still on the car, walked over, thrown her **** on the ground and looked at her saying, "you dumb bitch...dont you EVER put your **** on mine or anyone elses car...learn some damn respect and get off the phone!"
My friends say i have some anger when it comes to people being near my car...

not sure about the throwing but i think the taking them and driving away would be funny as hell. it still made me laugh...
and someone threw a cigarette that hit my friend's brand new GTI at a stop light, so she got out and picked it up and threw it back into the lady's car... hehe.

OK, time for my story. I was in my red truck and am coming across the parking lot on a windy day to see a shopping cart accelerate into the side of the truck. BANG, big dent and a scratch in the paint. I smiled, got in and drove away. Sometimes it sure feels good to drive an old POS plow truck when the 8 can’t come out and play. If that were the 8 I would have been more than a little upset.
Sorry to hear about your car(s).

I think you should have taken the cellphone out of her hand and chucked it as hard as you can in the opposite direction, then toss her bags to the street.
Or casually put the bag on the ground, drop trow and lay a steaming pile on her eggs, make sure you wipe with the bag, or if there is TP in there.. Even better.

It's not only that people damage NICE cars. It's the fact that some people have no respect for other people's property that would **** me off. I still hope whoever let their cart go at least apologized to you, even if you didn't care (which still baffles me). I drove a $500 accord all throughout university, and if someone hit it with their cart, I'd still flip.

She was inconsiderate to put her groceries on galleychief's trunk and it was especially thoughtless for her to drag them off. But while her actions make her responsible for repairing any scratches she might've caused, throwing her groceries on the ground was overreacting.

Would you stoop all the way down to put the stuff on the ground, or would you find a place for them at waist level?
Maybe next time, a simple "let me help you with that" and lift the bag off your trunk properly and stow it in her vehicle. Then an informational "you know, some cars, like mine, have trunk lids made of softer metals that can dent easily. You might want to be more careful next time so as not to accidentally cause a dent!"
That said, I still understand why you lost your cool.

I was walking out of the supermarket heading towards my car. About 15 or so yards in front of me is a woman carrying two paperbags of groceries in one arm while talking on the phone. She is walking towards an SUV parked next to my RX8. To my horror and astonishment she plopped her bags of groceries on to my trunk so that she could dig her keys out of her purse. Seeing this my pace quickened and I was at my car as she was opening her tailgate. She appeared not to notice me, yaking on the phone, and "dragged" one of her bags off my trunk placing it in her car. This is when I lost it, and I picked up her other bag and tossed it toward the back of her car. As it crashed to the ground, spilling the contents, she spun around looking shocked. I casually opened my door, started the car, and drove away. Inspection of the trunk revealed no dents or damage only scuffs in my wax job. Was I out of line?
