Yes you were out of line. You destroyed perfectly good groceries that you could have taken and used. :D

I think most of you are saying you'd have done the same or worse but in reality ... no you wouldn't. Well, maybe you would! heh. You were definitely out of line IMHO. Dude, having a temper tantrum and throwing someone's groceries can't be considered "in line."
However, I do think other 8's in your area are just a little bit safer now...doubt she'll do that again!

I dunno, but I'm beginning to feel like I may have over reacted
I think that statement and the fact that you come here to talk about it answers your question. You're not an a-hole and you know what you did was out of line as there were several ways this situation could have been handled.

While others may relate the story of "How I got even" and "This one time", etc... it's important to remember that actions like these contribute nothing. Light scratches can be buffed out on the next wash/wax, but the opportunity to demonstrate the best qualities of your character that day are gone.

Anyone can be an hot tempered a-hole, but not everyone can be understanding when it counts the most.

After agreeing with the reaction i have to say taking the groceries and tossing them in your trunk and driving off with a thanks would have been classic as suggested previously.

Ooooh, that's a good one! I'll have to remember that if I ever see anyone molesting my car! Just seeing them wet their pants would almost be worth it. :D

I'm with the people that say you overreacted a bit. I would have been pissed too, but I would have walked up, carefully moved her groceries to the ground, examined my car, and carefully explained to her that it is inconsiderate and rude to use other people's personal property as your own personal shelf, and she would be responsible for any scratches or dents I found. Of course, I might also have set off the panic alarm the minute I saw her setting the groceries down on my car. Which probably would have said everything needed in a much more amusing manner.

Not extreme enough imo. I would've done something similar followed by a multitude of F Bombs to let her know how freaking dense she is and she should have more respect for somebody elses property. And as far as being in her shoes, I have been. I've had a grocey bag or 2 in each hand and when I got to my car I put them down on the pavement, reached in my pocket to get my keys, popped my trunk, inserted groceries, shut trunk, got into car and drove away. WTF is so hard about this??

I would have gotten into my car real fast and hammered it leaving the groceries on the ground.

Last summer I approached a guy leaning up against my car talking to another guy. I don't know if he was acted like he owned the car. Anyways, I just walk up to him with a shocked look on my face and gave him a snarky "What are you doing?!?!. What's wrong with you man?." He gave me a surprise and dirty look and said sorry while walking away.

A similar time I just hit the panic button and the guy jumped away from the car shocked. That was alot more fun.

If someone did that to shinka I would be very pissed. At a minimum there would have been some demeaning and swear words comming her way. The fact that she had an suv and a cell phone would have meant she got 0 sympathy. Stupidity isn't a valid defense and if your not showing me respect (or my car that doesn't even get driven in the rain) there is no way your going to get any.

The mild mannered man in me says you were too extreme, but the pent up rage in me loves this story and says to you .... HELL YEAH!!!!! I'm serious! We all need to get it out sometimes, but seriously, whenever I feel like this toward some lady driver or elderly driver, I tell myself, this is somebody's mother, or grandfather. But guys, let em have it, but you better be ready for a response.

When I actually owned a nice sports car, it would be parked WAAAAAAAAY in back to prevent this sort of thing from even happening. I never parked next to any car if I could avoid it. Friends thought I was crazy, but 100,000 miles later and zero door dings, the results speak for themselves. I would never park my 8 (if I were fortunate enough to have one) next to another car, period!

right in line

for those who say that you should explain to the offending person what they are doing wrong have you tried it? i have/have to try this approach because it is required by the job. about 90% of the people get angry that you called them down for THEIR MISTAKE and many of them (about 80%) know exactly that they are doing something wrong/disrespectful. this is a basic case of lack of respect for others property. people who act this way just dont expect people to confront them and im glad you did. also people who act this way should be very glad this is not the 1800s and back.

I don't think that's overreacting. You were right on the ball. Nothing violent that would physically harm her but at the same time, not a wussy "Please take your groceries off my car, pretty please".

If it were me, and I saw her starting to put her bags on my car ... I would have hit the panic button (if I was in range) and ran straight to the car like a madman!

What's so hard about putting groceries on the ground? Scared that the paper bags might get scratches or get dirty?

If you didn't know me and I came into your house, ate your food, drank your beer, left a mess, took a dump without flushing ... wouldn't you call that disrespecting property?

Paper or plastic? If it was plastic, I would have emptied the bag onto the ground, placed it over her thoughtless head, and tied it real tight, sit back and light a cig and watch her turn purple. No wait, that ain't right. I would've emptied the bag into my trunk, placed it over her thoughtless head, and tied it real tight, sit back and light a cig and watch her turn purple. Yeah, that makes more sense :D

Would you stoop all the way down to put the stuff on the ground, or would you find a place for them at waist level?
Maybe next time, a simple "let me help you with that" and lift the bag off your trunk properly and stow it in her vehicle. Then an informational "you know, some cars, like mine, have trunk lids made of softer metals that can dent easily. You might want to be more careful next time so as not to accidentally cause a dent!"
That said, I still understand why you lost your cool.
OH PLEASE JON! how low does the bar have to be?
its like everyone drives numb. this woman talking on her phone and using someones car as a baggage stand is the same one hauling around 5000 lbs of metal, on the phone, not using her turn signals...come on! you know the ones that cause the accidents? they are also the only ones in the ditches here in michigan winters because they think sport utn insulates them from the rules of physics.
what if she dinged his trunk or scratched it...how do you feel when you see a new ding in your door when you come out of the store? wouldnt you like the chance to say something to wake them up?

i know that rage doesnt change anything but blood pressure, but she did not afford this man the same consideration that you recommend he show her.

i would be mad and react the same way...right on!

Oh you guys are too nice!!! While my car was being serviced they did two things that pissed me off.

1. slammed my car door w/ the keys in it.
2. was twirling a wrench with his finger right near the hood of my car.

Not knowing really what to say I said "What do you plan on doing when that wrench lands on my car"? He stopped.

I lose it when people even touch my car without my permission

I personally wouldn't have done that (i guess im one of the wusses )

I would of picked up the bag and put it on the ground like it should have been. Maybe she'll get mad at you, but then its your turn to get mad at her. Let her start the argument, and let yourself be the one to finish it
