Torque

I test drove a 230 bhp while my Alfa 156 2 ltr was being rebuilt( broken cambelt at 62k). I noticed the engine of the RX8 didnt have the same sound as the Alfa but still loved it all the same. The torque in the lower gears is quite important to me hence why I went for the 190 bhp. Since I got the Alfa back it is running better than ever, the torque is amazing and have even wondereed if they put a V6 IN IT..LOL. What's your experience of the 190 bhp on short journeys when gears are being used alot more?

Neither the 238 H.P. 6 M.T. or the 190 H.P. auto offer very much torque. You need to build a bit of RPMs to get the car up to speed and this is where it becomes fun (lots of fun). The 238 H.P. version allows several thousand RPM above that of the 190 H.P auto, so it's a little faster. In essence your replacing the low torque with high RPMs which is giving the car more power in the mid to upper range vrs the low end. From a driving enthusiasts point of view, it is fun to drive, as it offers smooth precise shifting and a flat torque curve, however it does not offer a drag racing off the line thrill that other performance cars offer, as they are two completely different cars to drive altogether.:D

the difference is not that big. both have more than adequate pull from a stop for driving around town.

don't listen to anyone that says it's "low" on torque: it's not at all like trying to ride a 50cc motorbike, and more like a well rounded sports sedan/sports car hybrid. the low gears are very very very short, as the motor revs quite high, and gives you enough pull to chirp the tyres easily through 2nd, and in 3rd too if you're going hard enough.

It's low on torque compared to a big V-8. If you compare it to my little Civic, it has an abundance of torque. Just keep in mind what other cars some people drive when they make statements about torque. For me, the RX-8 has alot of torque.

It appears to me that we have hit the age old fight between at owners vs. the 6 speed owners. I don't care if you are Ayrtten Senna behind the wheel of an 8 at if you line up next to me my 6 speed 8 will absolutely smoke the at. I have this arguement at work all the time with wannabe sport enthusiats that drive at. Go home and realize your at can't hold a candle to the 6 spd. simple because of the lack of revving ability. Torque or no torque, your excuses are assanine. I'm out

rx8miami are you asking to get flamed? There is no AT vs MT debate here. Both have been mentioned, and the same statement has been made about both the AT and MT.

the difference is not that big. both have more than adequate pull from a stop for driving around town.

rx8maimi, cool it. there's no reason to be rude, objectionable, and so blantanly confrontational.

in fewer words "nobody asked you". consider this a warning.

Huh...What is and flam and efrom? I know,I know, too much testosterone, hey kid. Take it easy on the auto transmission crowd they are brethren. There are no posts about racing the 2, just and explanation of the differences on both, to someone that doesn't have either and thinks the slightly higher torque auto would be more benefical, so save your borlas for the next campfire marshmellow roast!

Actually I enjoy smores. I understand they our brethren and I tend to type too fast without using the spacebar effectively. However you must admit there is no comparison so why even compare. Read into what a few of the comments above were and you'll see why they irked me. I think i'm out of this one for good now . Peace to all rx8s but don't test the 6 spd.!

Your attitude here is out of line. A forum moderator (Wakeech) warned you. He isn't just someone threatening you. He CAN ban you and will if you don't give yourself a heart attack first.

Don't test the 6 speed? I'll bite with my RX-7 since I don't own an RX-8. How many car length lead do you want?

I am actually going to do you a favor by giving you an education as to exactly why the 6 speed is faster despite less torque. It's called horsepower. Torque is a resistance to twist. Horsepower is work over an amount of time. Read this:

http://www.yawpower.com/tqvshp.html

BTW: You aren't getting on my nerves so do yourself a favor and just don't try. I don't know how much harder I can laugh before I actually hurt something. "Smores"!!! That lacked so much creativity and relevance that it was hilarious! You should do a pissed off comedian act sometime. The crowd would go nuts.

What does "cause THE ONLY THERE WOULD BE IS THE AT SEEING THE...." the part in caps doesn't make a lot of sense. I think you missed a few words.

I won't even get into the whole AT vs. 6-speed debate.

well first off, the caps were hit mistakingly. unlike the avid comp. user my typing skills aren't up to par. I tend to type faster than I think so I did miss a few words. The point that I was trying to make was that the only flames the "at" would see would be the ones coming from my Borlas.

Rotary God, you seem to think you are a God but you don't seem to be able to understand the arguement. Your rx7 must be nice but I think it lacks a humble driver. If you think my creativity is lacking maybe your handle needs the same improvement. Rotary God? Are your Mr. Wenkel? I don't think so. Warned for what? Listen, most of the people on the board seem to have some type of chip on their shoulders and fly off the handle with a little fun and thats ok with me. The problem I see here is the fact that the supposed moderators seems to act like they are rotary gods when they probably don't even own one. Anyhow I'll leave you with this. Torque may involve twist as you say but without it, you go nowhere off the line. An electronically controlled tranny such as the at's can not shift the same way a decent driver would shift his own, hence the lack of torque and your favorite one horsepower. Get real, I am not here to hurt anyone's feelings and I must admit I was hard on the above forum members about their at's. But please try not to throw weight around because you know as well as I know I did nothing wrong but hurt your at feelings. BOO HOO

"BTW" Get a grip. If you were actually laughing at this you probably wouldn't have gotten so defensive. If I could, I would post a link to a Sigmund Freud site.
FYI he's a master shrink and says when people get defensive about certain issues they are obviously offended. But you knew that right?

rx8miami: You accuse rotarygod of being arrogant, "Your rx7 must be nice but I think it lacks a humble driver," however, you and your huge egotism is the reason he responded. Keep your hypocracy in check. You're the typical adolescent male that brings down the reputation of all others in your age group. You have the 'speak when not spoken to' attitude, the 'I'm always right' attitude, and the 'I've got my head so far up my rear end I can't help my ignorance' attitude all combined. The result? You make youself look like a blundering fool and all those in your age group the same. How do I know? I'm 18 and far too many people assume I'm an idiot because I'm 18. They're wrong. I'm an idiot because I'm an idiot. At least I know it. I don't act like other people in my age group which is why I'm a total social outcast. Apparently having some sense and moral values isn't cool.

From what I was told in history class last year, Sigmund Freud is anything but a master shrink. He concluded that man's purpose was to kill their father and have sex with their mother. He based all his assumptions on crazy people, and he was addicted to drugs.

You see, now I know what is wrong with this site. Most of the kids on it are actually too young to drive, can't afford a car especially an 8 or just are full of testosterone as I was accused of being. Which is probabbly why they bark so much behind the guise of a comp. I was once 18 and I too thought I was a "baddass". You should have learned about Freud in psychology class and not history class. His contributions to history were probably minimal at best. Nice school you go to eh? So anyhow most people don't realize it but he is the father of modern psychology and yes believed all of those things you say, but guess what? He's right in his analysis of people like you. You seem to be a punk who wants to be cool and is a social outcast at school as you say. This might be why you vent online once someone makes a snide or synical remark. You will learn one day that life is not about what people say but about what they do. Do yourself a favor and get out of this one because it does not involve you. It involves that dork in the superman cape who started it!

All of you stop it now. There is no reason to be nasty to each other. You don't know each other from a stranger on the street, but you think it's okay to call each other names and get crappy for no reason? Come on now. If it doesn't stop, everyone involved gets warnings and the thread gets closed.

As my final reply in what is now a flamewar, your opinion was never asked for you just came in and made a completely random statement. You're not fooling anyone by saying you were once 18, clearly we've all been 18 months old at one point in time. I'd be surprised if you were over 14. If you are over 14, you're more ignorant than I originally expected. As far as myself goes, I know I am nothing but a nerd and I am perfectly secure in being a huge nerd. I have no wish to conform to society nor be a punk. I exist for three purposes. One is to serve as a warning to others, one is to provide a different viewpoint, and the thrid I cannot speak of here. I know who I am and I have no problems with myself or my current situation. Hopefully you will recognize the fact that you are wrong, admit it, and take responsibility for your actions.

By the way, these forums are mostly adults. The only reason I'm here is to collect information about the RX-8 which I am considering purchasing.
