Unhappy Totaled my 8, questions!

So I totaled my 8 in the rain, so sad, on the freeway. Changed lanes, caught a puddle and the back end came around the front...slammed into the center divider, long story short ended up on the drivers side.

The best part of the accident is that I was not injured.

Mine was a 2004 had about 11,000 miles on it. Just curious about what inusrance companies are paying off on cars. I want to buy another 8, I know they are safe at least...but worried about what I may end up getting for it.

Ouch!! Sorry about your 8, glad to hear youre ok. What colour was your 8? Silver? Anyway....insurance companies in the US typically use nada value. This is usually higher than blue book. Who is your insurance company?

Sux for you dude. Thank god your ok. Are you in the Los Angeles area? The friggin rain lately has been rediculous. Our cars love hydroplaning since they are 50/50 weight dist. and i guess thats what did it. I really want to know if it was Silver though.
As for insurance, you provider will most likley look up the blue book value as well as 5 ads for used RX8's similar to yours in the same area you live. They take the average price and give that to you. You should get a good amount but not enough to take the money to the daler and buy a new one.
Good luck with everything!

Either he had a car without DSC or he's one of those idiots that misguidely thinks he can drive better with it turned off. Either way, DSC would have likely prevented this.

I know this is something people probably don't pay much attention to but... a potentially big part of the answer is whether or not ThisGuy has Gap Insurance! When I got my Evo I had it and when I got my Rx-8 I also got it. What Gap Insurance works out to is once the insurance company pays off the value of the car the company you finance the car through eats the remaining difference. With my Evo thank goodness for the markups some dealers had on it because with over 10,000miles on it the insurance company valued it at about MSRP. I had to make 1 more payment which the finance company sent back to me once all the proper stuff had been processed! Then again even if the car lost a few thousand in value I would have still been able to walk away without being in the hole!

My 8 wasn't Silver, and I dont have DSC...I am sure it would have helped. If I get another, I will be sure to get DSC.

Obviously I asked the insurance company, I am waiting to hear what they offer as a settlement. I was asking to get an idea what others are being offered in order to determine if the insurance companies offer is adequate or not....seems to make sense to me.

As far as Gap insurance, I put over 6K down and owe about 18K or so....so I hope to get enought to put something down.

DSC doesn't always save your ***. My buddy with an 05 S40 had his DSC on and lost it today in the rain. Did a 180 and ended up in the grass. He wasn't speeding or turning when it happened either. The rain can be dangerous no matter what you have.

At this point, you should be able to get a brand new 2004 for the amount that the insurance company pays for your totaled 8. Dealers are making really good deals around here to move the 2004's. Good luck and I am so glad you were not hurt! Don't forget to post the results.

It seems like you should get something back. As long as you payed enough into the finance people shelled out I would think the insurance company would value the car at more than you owe! I hope everything works out in your favor!

BTW....If you live somewhere that it snows even the DSC doesn't help unless you have winter tires. Just a little friendly information just in case.

Electronic traction control schemes generally try to maintain friction between the tyres and the road by limiting throttle response and/or cutting ignition. DSC won't help much if you've hit a pool of water and end up sliding sideways.

Anyhow, the insurance company would probably do something like look up the Kelly Blue Book values for retail and private party sales, then look up prices for the closest 50 matches to your vehicle within a 100 mile radius, and then do some sort of averaging to come up with a settlement amount.

With that said, you can do the searching yourself at kbb.com and cars.com and see what the going rate for a car like yours is. Chances are the settlement amount will be just enough for you to purchase a used car in similar condition to yours (prior to your wreck) - less fees and deductible.

Sorry if I sounded harsh in my post. Trying to make a point to all the dopes who HAVE DSC and think that they are better drivers than what the DSC can help them with. Sorry about your car and glad you're OK. Yes, you will decidedly want DSC on your next car.

They should call it the "SYA" system ...

"Save your ***" ...

Mine has saved mine a few times. It's really an effective and well designed system and would like have prevented your car from hydroplaning when you hit that puddle.

That said, and I"m sure you've thought of this, but it would appear you were going to fast for the conditions that were present. Easy human error to make.

Did you still have stock tires? I've read enough reports of accidents in the rain to think there's a problem with wet pavement. Although there is an obvious and well documented problem with the stock tires in the snow, I'm thinking that summer performance tires also aren't up to the usual all-weather radial snuff in the rain. If I have my 8 out in the rain, I take it easy.

ThisGuy, I'm sorry to here you KO'd your car. However you are better off with it being a total than getting it fixed. Trust me on this one. The following is what my insurance company decided to settle for:

They took the bluebook from Dec 04, that was the closest they could get to my accident date and the bluebook on a new 05 an averaged. They will pay me $25,275 plus sales tax on my new car purchase up to the amount of my settlement. So, 7% will be another $1770 for a total of $27,045.

My car was a 2004 Sport Package 6MT and cost originally $26,000.

Glad you are OK, chalk another safe accident up in the RX8. Did your airbags deploy? Mine didn't.

Now, don't forget to go vote on the color of your wrecked 8:

That is a very ignorant comment.......

I hate seeing this spouted on here like DSC is the greatest thing in the world. I've owned like 30 cars, this being the first with DSC. So that means I should be dead or have totalled all the previous cars I drove without DSC?

And I always disable the DSC, not because I drive better, I just don't want to rely on some false sense of security. I like to think I'm in control at all times.
