So you're going to ignore better technology just because you think you're in better control? Best of luck with that idea. Why the hell would you NOT want to take advantage of the safety feature. Using that same logic, I'd strongly recommend disconnecting your airbags as you didn't die in all your previous cars that didn't have them, and for that matter, you should really remove the cruise control, turn signals, etc. Oh, and I'm sure you've had your antilock brakes disconnected too, because for certain, you can modulate and pump the brakes far faster and better than any electronics. Your logic is ignorant at best.

Here's a case in point - last night, the temperature was around 32 degrees here and it was misting. The roads have so much salt on them, that no ice forms, BUT, turning a corner at about 17 mph (two 45 mph roads, green light), there were waiting cars at the stoplight so in the next lanes are a bunch of souls ... going into that corner, right at the apex of the corner, the back end suddenly and violently stepped out - the car instantly "fish tailed", so I'd guess that there was some black ice there ... but instantly the DSC cut in, the car slid sideways less than a foot or so, and all was fine.

Regardless of the fact that I'm a race-school trained driver, I'm convinced I would have spun out and possibly across the other lane and into the cars waiting at that light - at the worst, tearing the **** out of my car, and several others, and possibly killing them.

Instead, I had that quick funny feeling in the pit of my stomach that my bacon was just saved by the electronics, and I motored on.

You cite "false sense of security" ... the foolish drivers besides those that shut off the DSC are also the ones that drive harder and faster in bad conditions because they expect the DSC to pull them back from the brink. There's no substitute for smart driving, and no DSC or anything else will save you from that. It's the same mentality that causes people in SUVs to drive foolishly in the snow. Just because the 4wd will get you started faster doesn't mean you can turn and stop any better.

I stand by my comment. You're very foolish to shut that off. You never know when you might need it.

You are in control all the time...until you lose control, that is when DSC kicks in.

This Guy, sorry to hear about the loss. Hopefully your insurance will put you back in another 8, there was a guy a few months ago that totalled his and a week or two later was in a brand new 05. There is hope, insurance doesn't always screw you

NAVILESRX8 - thanks - my tone was a bit harsh but I appreciate you seeing the point. Not too many people do that around here.

I do on occasion shut off the DSC - but it's when I am fully aware of the consequences of the action - such as with fresh snow in a deserted parking lot where I want to cut a few donuts! Or, on the autocross track - although I usually leave it on for the first run or two until I feel it operating a fair amount on the run. Then I shut it off and see my times improve.

So I got the call from the insurance comp. ...better than I expected. They put the cash value at 26,300 and with tax and lice-. minus my deductable a total of 28K...minus what I owe...which turns out is about 20K I will end up with 8K.

The best part is I paid less than 26,300 for the car....but loss money on the interest over the last 6 months and the deductable and future insurance hike.

So I think I am off to get a new 8 once I get the check....hopefully I can get a really good deal, and cut my payments enough to offset the insurance hike.

Anyone have any luck purchasing the AD cars?

The best part of the accident is that I was not injured.

Mine was a 2004 had about 11,000 miles on it. Just curious about what inusrance companies are paying off on cars. I want to buy another 8, I know they are safe at least...but worried about what I may end up getting for it.
Please say it was a silver one

Sounds like you did fine. I wound up with about a $17 savings per payment. My interest went up from 3.1 to 4.1 since I purchase my original in May of 04.

I took care of my new 8 shopping and bidding wars before receiving my check. I also took care of my new loan so that when the insurance company wrote my checks, I would already have my new 8 on order. It's taking about a week for it to be delivered on an auto transport truck. I was very specific about what I wanted to purchase and that I wanted it delivered to the dealer instead of being driven from one location to the other. I didn't want some punk heavy-footed twit driving it for 30 miles before I break it in properly. That would be like having some guy you don't know pick your bride-to-be up to bring her to the wedding and find that they stopped over for a quickie at the local Day's Inn.

I purchased the same 8 as before except it's a 05 and has the GT package instead of Sport. Dang nice to pay $17 less per month and have a nicer ride! :D

Hey ThisGuy,
Sorry to hear it was totalled, but I agree with the other post here that said you're probably better off than having had it fixed. And glad to hear you are ok.

Mine was blue, 04 w/Sport Pkg, 11k miles; insurance is paying $26,650 +tax,title/license, less deductible. They didn't give me any additional value for the invisible bra, so I ate that cost. They valued my RB catback exhaust for $125, but I am guessing I can sell it for more than that, so I took it off.

Whoever mentioned gap insurance, that is something I'm definately going to do next time around.
Good luck!

Please tell me you wear Nomex and a race helmet every time you get in the car...I mean...after all,

Why the hell would you NOT want to take advantage of...safety feature(s).

Cool Buying a new 8!

So...I am waiting patiently for my check from the insurance company so I can get a new 8.

I have my financing..so all I need to do is fight the dealership for the best deal.

My goal is to get the ad car...I have been clipping the ads from various dealerships, and intend to buy the one or sometimes 3 cars at that price....some dealerships have been having sales on the entire inv.

I had the base model, so I want to step up and at least get the touring package...mainly to havde DSC.

...any advice would be helpful....meaning ways to find out if dealerships in SO CAl are having any specials, hold back, dealer insentives, etc....

The more knowledge the better!

Update!!!

OK...so I totaled the 8 on February 11 and as of yesterday bought another 8....I got 8K in cash after paying off the old one, so my payments are actually less now...for more car.

it was used..

2004 Titanium, GT pretty much everything except navi....with 6900 miles for 26,500. It has 19 inch rims 245/35 I am trying to find out how much the rims are they are Axis rims 7 spoke chrome....tires are venitus....

Seems that whoever had the car before me took great care....3 oil changes...car has a bra( not sure if I want it) and a cover...tinted windows, 6 disc changer, etc...great shape....he paid 33K in early 2004...so I think I go a good deal.

My old RX8, may be in an upcoming movie....it was used as an "Extra", but hard to say if the scenes will be used or not...I have no idea!

Here are some pictures of the old one post accident.

Gap or not

Your pay-out depends on a few things-- Did you -lease (if so you have gap insurance) and it is likely to put more $ in your pocket- if not- check local kelly B.B.,(what a dealer would pay for the car) low blue, it will be within 2% of what you will get. More importantly- you did not get injured.

Man I hope I am as lucky as you...I totalled my silver 8 last week, it was a lease though, hoping they will pay off the leased car and then give me a downpayment, I had the top of the line without navi so hoping to get the same thing, with navi.
My thread
Congrats on your new purchase!

Is it just me or do these number being thrown out about what the insurance will pay is a bit high?? When does the insurance company throw in tax and lic. unless you had a special policy for a less than year old car. Would like to hear from these guys after they actually get the check in their hands. Insurance companies arent known to be generous with payouts

Insurance companies have to pay you, what it would cost you to purchase the same vehicle...when it is totalled that is. So that is the value (price) of the car plus tax and license...at least that is the law in CA.

I got 26,300 for the car 500 more than I paid for it...and tax and license almost 28,000....after paying off the car...I owed 20K,,,,I got around 8K back to use to purchase.

Now I need to send in the paperwork for my rental, they pay $20 a day.,,for 30 days max

I'm in NV, and received my check earlier this month. State Farm included tax and title/license fees.

The Island!

I think it comes out in July.

I have no idea if they will use any of the footage, I understand that some of the days they had my car they didnt even shoot...so who knows. They may have used others too...

From what I understand the movie is set in like 2030...so my car as well as some other current models where used as a collection of "classic cars"
