Most of those crew cabs were only 3 doors. Same with the Saturn back in the day. The first time I saw 2 demi doors was on the 8, followed by a few of the recent ginormous crew cabs.
Then again, I don't really pay a whole lot of attention to pick-up trucks because all the commercials indicate that I only need one if I plan on driving through a huge amount of mud on my way to a construction site where 4 tons of cargo will be dropped from a crane that releases its load at an unnecessarily high height as to demonstrate the ruggedness of the aforementioned truck.
Then again, haven't demi-doors been around for 50 years?

It's interesting because, while the suicide semidoors may not be novel to the RX-8, people invariably react to them as if they are. I have yet to open mine for someone without them being surprised and wow-ed (with the exception of one friend who has a pickup truck with them).
