Besides why drive a car that eats so much gas, is an AT, AND is much slower than what you're use to. I personally wouldn't drive an AT that ate so much gas, at least with the MT I can enjoy the car and it justifies it.

Where do you get your INFO from? Kellogs Corn Flakes box's?
Some peoples kids,,,,,,,
Take a look at the "AT" thread in the "Tech" section of this Forum.
Compare problems to the "MT". Then open mouth.

I can't say I dissagree about feathering the clutch and being daft with the throttle but at least I put up with it because I love stick shift. Well to make a long story short, I'll ask my question now: How badly will I get raped if I trade in this 2005 RX8 for a 2006 AT RX8 or even the 4 speed 2005 Auto RX8. I wonder I'll even really appreciate the 2006 AT after owning a stick. Maybe I should save money and go with the 2005 Auto?

If anyone has any experience with returning/trading cars after they were newly purchased can you give me some advice and what kinda money I would be out?
You gonna get ******* raped like someone shoved their legs up your ***, seriously consider keeping the MT. However if you had to sell then get the 6AT, I think its ok. As for 4AT, just don't..

I think you'll hate yourself if you go from the MT to the AT, the power difference sucks even if it's an 06 AT. Also the nature of the car just doesn't suit a slushbox, it's not a toyota camry. That being said, I bought my S2000 which my significant other drives and she didn't know how to drive stick at all when we picked it up. I took her to a big empty high school parking lot and she was cruising on her own by the end of the day after about 2 hours of practice.

The trick is just teaching the first 2-3 gears and after that it's easy. It's been about 6 months now and she's already been autocrossing the car with me for 3-4 months.

No sense of humor? You didn't read his whole post: "she has decided that it's too complicated to drive (MT) in NYC". Case closed.

I firmly believe you would loathe driving an AT after knowing what a REAL rx8 feels like. Bite the bullet and teach the wifey stick... maybe take her out to the suburbs for a little practice. Any neigborhoods with alot of stop signs are good for stick lessons.
Hang in there, dont take the plunge, I truely think you'd regret it for the rest of your cars life.
OK what do you mean "Drivabel controll of the car is nearly non-existant."?
Are you saying the AT dont respond like the MT? I test drove the AT and the MT. My Girl could not get the feel of the stick. So I went with the AT. However I will be getting a MT real soon.
Can you also fill me in on what the "Real rx8 feels like"?
Thank you for your time,
-Gilbert

416to212, If you dont want to teach your Girl how to drive stick in traffic then sell your 8 to a privet party dont trade in its not worth it. I'm keeping my AT its almost payed off. I was planning on getting a MT. But after the probs I'm having with my 04 AT I'm second thoughts.

it seems to me you'd be better of getting something other than the rx-8 if youre going AT.

In this case, she'll be regretting the switch from MT to AT because it's too difficult.

Well, what happened with the 8?

The AT ruins the RX-8 IMO, I just don't see the point of a rotary if you're castrating it with a oldschool AT tranny that can't rev high and weighs more.

What this topic comes down to, is would you rather have an RX-8 AT or a Ford Mustang AT? Or a Civic or Corolla AT? Most people here don't realize that in NYC it's not really enjoyable or practical to drive a MT period. Yes, the RX-8 AT is a watered-down version of the "real" *cough* MT RX-8. But when you have to make compromises because of spouses and where you live, you take the best alternative.

I pretty much learned on mine. I'm don't have the smoothest take-off some of the time but I don't usually have a problem getting the car going and not killing it anymore. The only thing I find a little annoying is that when I have the seat positioned just right for the clutch the gas pedal is too close. I also notice if my seat is too close depending on the shoes, I have a more difficult time with taking off smoothing. Shifting into other gears is never a problem. It's just first gear that gives me some issues.

I was also very proud of myself Saturday for stopping on a decent incline (going up the mail hill through Oregon City) and being able to get going without rolling back into the idiot that practically stopped in my trunk.

It just takes practice to get it down and then it's not much problem. I've just got to master centering myself in a parking space better.

The best alternative is getting something like a G35C that is better suited to the AT. Though if I needed a car for around 25k and it had to be AT I'd be driving a Jetta or GTI.

My AT is a piece of junk! It's been in the shop 6 times since I got it and still the mechanic said he doesn't know what's wrong. Look at the threads, plenty of problems with the AT.

I think Ike's right on target with both of these statements. While it is a personal choice which transmission you go with, it seems there are much better options if AT is your decision/obligation.

in response to 'all the problems people have had with their AT's'...ive never had a problem either (knock on wood). And I know everyone on here likes to bash those of us with AT's but most of us aren't hardcore car people, thus the AT. We like the car, the feel and me, I drive in traffic an hour both ways to and from work and its my only vehicle. So personally I'm glad the made an AT version.

I couldnt' enjoy the rx8 in AT, I had to trade it in for the 6spd. I'm not saying its wrong to buy the 8 in AT, but it just doesn't feel as right. I guess its just personal preferences and situations.
