Traded '03 Cobra for RX-8. Am I crazy?
Hello everyone!
Picked up my new RX-8 Saturday. It is Whitewater/Snowflake Pearl (love that paint), w/ all black interior. 6-speed, full appearance package, Grand Touring Package...basically from what I understand it has every option except the NAV system.
Stickered for just under $34,000. Got it for just under $28,000.
First impressions:
1) I love the HID lights
2) Clutch pedal and shifter are effortless
3) Handles like a dream - turning radius is SICK
4) Can't believe how many options they got on this car
The Cobra was powerful. Had it modded and it dynoed at 450 RWHP, 457 RWTQ. But that was it. I've been driving Mustangs since 1997. Even though I've had 3 different ones in the last 8 years, it was still the same plain interior, same crappy handling...and I just had to get something totally different. Besides the car was starting to give me trouble and the dealer's service deptartment wasn't co-operating.
Until the RX-8, the cars I've owned that were the most fun to drive was a 1996 Probe GT and a 2000 SVT Contour. This car seems to be a cross between those and my Cobra. Exactly what I was looking for and then some!
I know nothing about the rotary engine and very little about the rest of the car at this point. Kind of weird since I knew every nut and bolt on a Mustang.
Look forward to learning.

The handling is what drew me to the car, too. I've been driving a Ford Focus for the last few years which has great handling (turning radius < RX-8), but I need just a little more power. I'm a former Mustang GT owner, so I understand the trade offs between handling and power.
My husband and my friends think I am crazy, too. The RX-8 makes all rational thought go out the window, doesn't it?
I complete my trade on Wednesday afternoon. I'm a little nervous, though. My Focus looks brand new and has been flawless and trouble free for 63,000 miles in the 3.5 years I've owned her. She has HID headlights, fog lights, moonroof, power everything, 460 watts + sub in the trunk. I wish I could afford to keep both cars.

Congrats on joining the group, when i got my 8 it was a decision between the 05 Mustang GT or an 05 8. Not having had a chance to actually drive the GT I can't truly say that I would have got the 8; that being said in a lot of ways I'm happy that my former Ford dealership was not cooperative, I'm having a blast with my 8.

Great thinking I geuss, did you have your cobra paid off? Because that's a fairly new car. Anyway, to Arkimedes, just so you know, I'm a Zx2 (s/r shh...) convert too. I still have her, but I dream of my new baby.

Congrats and welcome, if by crazy you mean smart...I agree your CRAZY...lol
The Cobra has alot of power, no doubt, but that's pretty much it. The RX8 does everything very well, looks better, can handle better, and is very fun to drive and live with daily.
Congrats and get ready to learn learn learn...

2005 Mustang can and does handle well on the track. Just check out the Grand Am racing results.
The 8 is a beautiful car. The new Mustang is the best Mustang yet. Decisions are difficult...

My first dilemna is that it is too quiet. My Cobra had a high flow H-pipe w/ an aftermarket cat-back and was pretty loud and mean sounding. I know I could never achieve that sound with this car and don't really want to, but I'd like to be able to hear the car a little more. The Racing Beat cat-back might be the one I get. Clear corners is the only other thing planned right now.

actually with the Hymee exhaust and a catless midpipe you'd be roaring...makes the Cobras jealous
the Superchargers are going to be released in the next few months, plural because there are about 5 rushing the market in addition to more turbos to compliment the current greddy offering.
add a SC to the mix and you will have a car that sounds like an F1, probably too loud, seriously

Hey man, how are you liking the Rx-8? I think I've talked to you before.
I'm Shane I had a Red 10th anniversary Cobra just like yours.
I too sold it about a montha go, and I have been thinking about getting an Rx-8 for about a year now.
I know the Rx-8 isnt going to have nearly the torque, or the horse power the Cobra had. So knowing that going into it, I think we'll be just fine.
Also the Rx-8 doenst handle nearly as well as the Cobra does to mods. If I get the car with most of the options like you, without Nav, I pry wont be adding much to it.

Wow....thats a sweet looking mustang, and I don't even like mustangs.
Anyhoo a friend of mine just traded a Mustang in for an RX8....he's thrilled with his new car, and I'm happy you are too. Just remember to do/get your oil changes religiously in your new car.
Now get off the computer and go drive that puppy around
