Contrary to the bashers here, the SI is a nice little car and a great performance value, so have fun with it.
But if a car is causing you financial hardship...well, it ain't worth it. Buy used, something you can clearly afford, which doesn't seem to be the SI either. Based on what you've said, get yourself financially fit first, or you'll just get out of one mess into another.

I think they feel threatened. They are scared they might get by a FWD car.

no joke here...I drove my Probe for a whole 4 days with all the snow, and as soon as they got the roads cleaned off, I took the 8 out again. It's like taking it home brand new all over again!....$5K less on the loan

Buyer's regret--that is a horrible feeling when it comes to cars.
Personally, I would not have bought the Civic Si. It is odd looking at the whole rice crowd high-theft and vandalism target turn me off. I used to drive a 1994 Acura Integra GS-R. I've had enough of that type of car.
I would have bought a VW GTI or a Mazdaspeed 3 or something else used like a Subaru Legacy GT or even a Cobalt SS.

I just can't justify paying MSRP or over MSRP for a new car. With depreciation in first three years, it's like worst investment ever. Hence the reason, I will never own Civic SI (dealers won't deal...)
But i do agree civic Si coupe is sweet car. It looks pretty awesome too with fancy interior.
Hope you have fun with your ride.

Wow. I traded my civic in for my '8. I guess that we're heading in different directions. My problem with my '98 civic was mostly the dealership; They were completely clueless. The rest of my problem was that I bought the wrong car. I guess that I believed the magazines too much. All the glowing reviews for the civic are B.S. in my opinion. Fact is that a cheap car is a cheap car.
Your problem is when you bought the '8 you bought the wrong car for your needs. I wish you luck with your Si and I hope that your dealer is much better than mine was.

Sounds a used Wrx wagon would've been a good compromise if you could get pass the stylin'. A relationship with the 8 is a long term comitment. It's like the smokin' hot girl of your dreams you're actually now datin'. She's high maintenance, she's got the looks, she's forgivin' when the road gets rough and rocks your world when you make the right moves! That's why you don't mind spending a little in accessories and other little things to make the day to day more interesting. I'm 26 and in many ways the 8 is just the perfect car for me.

I also read some reviews where the Mazdaspeed 3 hands it to the Civic Si, and it's rated slightly slower than the 8 for acceleration with worse handling and FWD tho certainly much closer to an Si.

Anyway, not to spark a big debate or anything and sort of off topic but I just thought this comment was inaccurate. I can't disagree with how the Civic feels to you (it felt decidedly underpowered to me), but the part about the comparative race. Plus I noticed there were some perspective buyers reading who may be misled. Now I did hear the 08 RSX Type S is predicting claims of 6.1...
As to your situation, I feel for ya. I bought an RX8 Special Ed. and my payments+gas+insurance were at a point where I could just squeak by. And then a good friend's Dad (who ran the company I worked for) committed a little act called nepotism and my buddy stole not only the promotion I had been offered (and was waiting for the ink to dry) but my entire job to boot. Next thing I knew, those gas fill ups were really starting to hurt. To make matters worse, I had to relocate to the GTA to pursue new career options and ended up in a place with outdoor parking (gasp!). Nothing breaks your heart like chipping/prying 3 inches of solid ice off your door in the morning. Sadly I find myself paying attention to Mazda 3 commercials. Alas, I refuse to take such a loss for the short term gain of decreased gas expenses. I'll suffer for my 8 just like it suffers for me every highway on-ramp.

P.S. Please no lectures on the unimportance of 0-60 times or the difference between real life drivers and pros, I'm aware, I'm aware and I still think a Civic Si is not remotely in the same class!

I agree, the 8 is to perfectly balanced it doesn't feel like you're actually goin' 20mph over the speed limit. I do a lot of drivin' on the I-101. My route is a long stretch of freeway with several high speed turns and elevation changes I practically greet the cops by their first name. The Si and Rx8 are worlds apart! and yes I would take the MS3 any day over an Si. As a matter of fact the GF is thinkin' 'bout gettin' it. Keepin' my finger crossed.

The scores I was finding were a couple high 6s (one 6.5) and a loooot more 7s. I hate to break it to you, but in no way is that as fast as an RX8 GT, straight line or not (and certainly HP is only 1 of many factors). I just watched a Japanese race (probably discussed many times before) where an RX8 A-spec absolutely hands it to an RSX Type R (as well as a Golf, an Alfa Romero and to a lesser extent, an S2000) and I'm positive a Type R is faster than a Type S. Maybe there are other races with different drivers and results? But in this one... not even close. 5.9-6.1 does not equate 6.8-7.2 or higher, non-pro driver or not that's a full second.

I'm sure any 8 driver knows (and a lot speeding tickets will testify) that how fast the car FEELS it's going is in no way as fast as it usually is (the smooth rotary playing a big part in that). Many a time I have been shocked to see I was doing a good 60Km/h faster than I thought (cruising on empty highways and roaring up empty on-ramps and such).

The MS3 is noticably faster and quicker than the RX-8.
The reason why he thinks his SI is faster is most likely because of the power delivery. The VTEC kicking in makes just about every Honda fanboi think their car is a rocket and could never lose in 3rd gear

- Like I said at the bottom, I'm aware of the significance or lack thereof of 0-60 times. Of course there's a shitload more to consider for overall performance, that's why I chose the RX8 over other similarly priced cars with better times. If it was all about the 0-60, I woulda gone another way.
But the bottom line is, time is time. 6.8 does not beat 5.9 in a straight line any way you slice it. Well unless one of the drivers isn't up to snuff. And that's what was being compared. He said straight line. Unless he means over 60mph, and I would be SHOCKED if driving down the highway, a Civic Si pulls up and then takes an RX8 to the mats.
- Secondly, yeah the race was an A-Spec, which as far as I know does not have major mods re: engine and horsepower, but more along the lines of flywheel, exhaust, suspension. Annnnnnnnd what do you suppose the Type R is? That race was A-Spec vs Type R. This whole thread is talking stock RX8 vs Si (Type S). I figured A-Spec vs Type R is a fairly close comparison since I have not seen stock vs Type S and A-Spec and Type R are both tuned thereby equalizing things.
You say your video is Stock vs *Type R*?? Well now, we're not comparing the same vehicle anymore are we? Same with the ITR. Are we not talking about "Racing tuned" (hence the type R badge) with these cars? Than what does that have to do with an Si or a stock RX8? Maybe I'm mistaken but I was under the impression Type R was an upgrade over S.
I figured my post was gonna stir up some misunderstanding. I guess bringing in 0-60 I asked for it. Ironical...
Re: MS3. See above. It goes from Point A on the road to Point B in a slower time... It can't corner as well, is less balanced, is not RWD yet is "noticeably faster?". Gonna need to see some proof on that claim. I'll test drive it myself once the weather gets nice. "Comparable on the straight" is more what I've been hearing about the MS3. And like the last 2 posters said, all the data out there is saying a chunk better than the Si. But I guess to stay on topic, the MS3 is priced higher than the Ci no? Mileage? Those were the poster's primary concerns and what the discussion evolved into... cost of ownership vs performance.
Justarius
P.S. As for the infamous VTEC kick, gee, that sounds a lot like how I feel around when the needle crosses 6500rpms and keeps going ;-)

well even if the SI isn't a sports car, its steering-gearbox-clutch feel is amongst the best in the business and very comparable to an RX-8.
I have an S2000 and am currently hesitating between the 2 cause I need a car with a backseat. The only big thing missing in the SI is RWD....That might make it harder for me to chose the SI, but I'm still hesitating.

I thought mods to the 8 didn't do anything, Ike.

Times are stupid for a number of obvious reasons, but even more so with the 8. I honestly don't think 10% of the people on this forum could get the car to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. And even if you could the toll it takes on your car is most certainly going to be much more than on a typical car with more low-end power resulting in the number of times you attempting it to be low.
