Not with the 7000 postman driving it yet again.

RSX Type S/SI vs. a RX8 in a straight line or otherwise is a drivers race. Period. 99% of the RX8's at the drag strip are at least 1/2 a second off of what they should run.
What conspiracy do you speak of?

Fact; all 5 RX8’s that have done full tests in the three most respected North American mags…R&T, C&D and MT...tested in the 5.9 to 6.1 0-60 range, 14.4 to 14.6 1/4's, with traps averaging 96mph. Two were “preproduction” cars, one was at the end of a long term test, and the other two were just regular production cars. That’s remarkably consistent, I can refer you to slower tested times from 2.0L S2000’s.

Speaking of which, one of the RX8 tests was a direct comparo against the “much faster” 2.2L ’04 S2000, and the 8 was 2/10ths slower 0-60, 3/10ths slower 1/4, and a 3.5mph slower trap. Is this a drivers race too vs. an 8, or is it only a drivers race with slower cars on this forum?

BTW, mags tests cars by using pro. drivers, taking the best of several runs, factoring out response/roll times, adjust for atmospheric temp., etc. Only a small percentage of most car owners can match their Sunday drag times with mag times, not just 8 owners.

saturn
That's because the 5.9 second stat everyone loves to throw around only happens if you drop at 6k+ rpms. I feel like people should have to have documented proof from a drag strip that you can actually get the RX-8 to 60 in 5.9 seconds before they can start using it for comparisons.
Why is launching at 6000rpm so weird on a 9500rpm car, but launching at 4000 on a 6000rpm car isn’t? And what do you think an optimal launch RPM is on a Si or S2000?

...sigh

I didn't say an optimal launch on any car is going to be good for it. I'm just saying that it's been proven that a "moderate" launch is worse timewise for the 8 than for another comparable car with more low-end power. If you baby those same two cars you'll see the disparity grow even more. I think quoting 5.9 seconds is unrealistic.

Unrealistic?
You mean besides the fact that all the magazines I've read have gotten this or damn close to it as their 0-60 times when they tested it? (personally I don't know, maybe they lied, I have never measured because it doesn't really matter.)

It's just what you can get if you decide to clutch dump the car. (never tried it) If you want a more "realistic" time, use that street start time that some prefer, I've heard that time is terrible for the rx8.

I personally don't know why every single time that someone brings up the quarter mile or 0-60 times for this car, someone else comes in (usually the same person)and almost blatently says that they are false.

The C&D street start test (5-60) is a joke, who goes WOT off idle? The 8 is bogging and nearly stalling at this speed, hence times into the 7's. Even the Evo was tested into the sixes in this test. The test flatters cars like the 300c and Mustang GT, not low torque and turbo cars.

Regardless, you'll get a nice launch at 5000-5500rpm, usually with no axle hop (my friends boxster hopes EVERY time), and I'll bet the difference is only 2 to 4/10s of a second from the 5.9.

I'm sure the majority of people didn't get an 8 for 1/4 mile and 0-60 sprints braggin' rights. So get over it, besides this tread has gone way off topic. Not to be gay or anythin, but I got my 8 'cause it's like nothing else on the road. I considered a Wrx and Rsx type S and I'm glad I held up and got the 8 instead. Like I said before she hits the right bottons for me everytime. as a matter of fact, the sun just came out I'm goin out for a mountain ride and to the beach. For all the whinners out there just save your pennies, go buy a turbo and then go and chase mustangs and the likes...

Agreeance.
It seems to me the only reason you would really care about 0-60 or 1/4 mile times is if you plan to race it in some way.

For those of us who just wanted a four-seater that handles well and has a unique look and feel, it seems to fit the bill quite well.

Lauching at 6000rpms is normal for an RX-8 that has a 9000rpm redline.

God for the price there's not other 4 seat RWD lightweight sports car out there.

Why all the biatching?

lmao on the Honda Accord good one hehe

Thing is it's very very hard to find a 3000 pound car that can carry comfortably 4 people, is RWD, under 30k, has great handling, great gearbox, great steering, great braking, great pedal feel, low driving position, etc...

I just find it funny that rx8 owners bitch so much about their car on their own forum instead of being happy of what they bought.

On S2KI.COM people complain about the S2000's faults, but come on....

At least your car has rear seats!!!

hehe

Why do people take such offense to people bitching about their cars? If we are happy with ours cars so be it. They have just as much the right to complain about their own cars. People chose to buy this car for different reasons, some the wrong reasons and some the right ones.

Totally off main topic, but I bought my 8 because I wanted a unique sports car that my kids can sit in and I would enjoy driving.

Raced a 350Z the other day just for sh*ts and giggles down the interstate. Got my a$$ handed to me, but it was fun none the less.

That is why I bought an 8, it is fun to drive.

Everything you're saying sounds right to me. I certainly am not an expert. I still say that a "normal" launch is what you, the owner of the car, would be willing to do all the time. If my car has a warp drive in it that fires when I launch at 8k it's useless unless I actually am willing to do that. People shouldn't quote arbitrary numbers that were obtained in perfect scenario's when they're never going to be in that situation.

In terms of 0-60 times, cars like the Z, for example, give a lot of room for error/unwillingness to rev high whereas cars like the 8 do not. This should most certainly be factored into the discussion if you decide to talk about real-world performance.

And prescriptionmazda -- you're being irrational. I have no desire to carry on any sort of discussion with you until you settle down.

Exactly. A 5-60 time is like doing a 20-100 test in top gear. It's pointless. Get a turbocharged car into top gear at that speed and punch it and see how long it takes it to really get moving. It's a worthless test.

I launch my RX-7 at 5500 rpm but it redlines at 7000 rpm.

On my 110whp, 355lbs (dry) ZX6R, it took longer to go from 40-60, in 6th gear, than 40-60 my rx8 (w/ my previous engine) in 2nd gear.

:D

That's what you're saying - it's about applying propper CONTEXT to the test data/numbers.

lol. I don't like some of the front angles of the Civic either.

Thanks a lot for all your input. Like I've said before, I miss the RX-8.

Can you blame a guy who impulsively goes out and buys an RX8 after 1 month of learning stick shift? at age 23.9? :D Impulsiveness....can be a gift :D

I drove a mini van, then an old avalon..... and missed out on the whole boy racing scene...which is FUN in my opinion. Even losing races is fun...the whole experience is fun.

Obviously ppl who put in more and more $ in their cars can win more races...

I realize I may not be going as fast as the RX-8 may have...but it FEELS like it. I wish the Rx-8 were louder and more mean sounding--so if i still had it, and WHEN i get another one, I'll definitely mod it with exhaust, intake, etc.

Stock Civic Si is extremely fun to drive....like many ppl have said the gearbox is buttery smooth as well and... just the sound of stock engine/exhaust sounds wonderful.

I think that when you start nit picking about times and tenths of a second, etc etc... it just kinda takes the fun away from driving.

Another thing is I REALIZE buying even the RX-8 was a dumb financial decision to begin with.

trading it in was another dumb decision-- ESPECIALLY with yet ANOTHER new car with a dealer markup.

The exclusivity of an Si is pretty cool. and again I can't stress how much fun it is to drive the car--how fun it FEELS

I test drove a 2006 S2000 before buying this car...and my biggest complaint was....although I'm sure it was fast, it felt too smooth... I wrote a post on here a while ago titled something like "i test drove an s2000....rx8 more fun to drive for SURE!" I heard the earlier models of s2000 were more raw and less refined...more fun to drive -_- (but not as fast)

that got a lot of replies too, lol

without a question, the Rx8 was more fun to drive for me. the s2000 felt way too smooth...That was before I learned to revmatch as well.

so to sum things up to each his own. I definitely want an RX-8 again. Or maybe a Kabura if it ever comes out... if i can ever afford it, I'd want the new RX7 that's supposedly coming out.

this past weekend I drove like a madman...had more fun that I did in my rx8...weaving in and out of traffic, racing my car even when there was no one to race.... speeding up next to EVos and STIs and cars that were obviously faster than my car....

I didn't do any stupid ricer crap like staring down or flashing my hazardlights... I just pulled even with them and stayed there to see if they'd try to smoke me. I'd laugh to myself if they pulled ahead of me and I tried to stay with them--it'd amuse me if they were scoffing at my car thinking "PSHHH!!!"

I didn't feel the urge to put a turbo in my car, take out all the sporting goods and junk I have in my back seat/trunk that I use frequently to lighten my car weight......

I just wanted to drive and have fun :D So over 14k miles now...and almost 6 months of having the car i guess -_-

I redlined it a helluva lot, went over 100mph several times, was in vtec a lot (very nice sound)... and completely drove the heck out of my car..........

got 24MPG on my fillup :D :D

from my experience with the rx-8 I would have gotten lower than 14mpg for sure.

have fun guys :D I taught my gf how to drive stick recently, and she says she's now BORED of driving auto... her dad is getting her a mini cooper type S.

She was set on getting auto..............even her dad has a bmw Z4 (AUTO!) >:X

Now she's set on getting manual. woot woot!

btw, I make $13/hr + commission. I'm in 35k credit card debt -_- $15k in college loans.... and now $22k on the civic -_- Got a bio degree 2yrs ago...gave up on the dentist route...looking to become a successful businessman/salesman someday :D

Here's a last look at my rx8:

not my car, but same thing: I was definitely more sold on the looks of the back of the Civic coupe:

Congrat on your new car. I just bought a 04 RX-8 myself and my brother has a 06 Si. I'll have to say they're both very fun car. I as actually looking at the Si seden until I found a low milage 8 that cost the same. It's always more fun in a RWD car, but I'm sure you'll enjoy the Si too. Not to mention better aftermarket support if you're into that.

One note though, I got close to 18mpg in the city on my 8, and my brother said he gets about 21mpg with similar driving style, not a huge difference. So the biggest saving would be the monthly payment (and the resale value too!). I snowboard as well, and I can actually fit two boards in. You'll have to be careful and get them in the pass through from inside the car, but it can be done.

Anyway, enjoy your new ride.

yeah I realize that now, It's just that I'm use to you saying things that make me laugh, not make me angry.

After a relaxing drive, I'm over it.

The only thing that really gets my goat is that the main desenters of the 8 on this forum are people who don't even own one. They don't even like it. I don't see the purpose of being here if don't own, are not planning to own, or don't like the car.

I second that. well, part of it.

Sometimes I really do question this action.

People that don't own one or try desperately to is one thing...of course they are welcome. Don't ever let anyone stop you from your thoughts or dreams. But why so many haters? I really doubt we'll ever know. I probably does have something to do with the ever-present negative aurora that inconceivably floats over this site.

Don't get me wrong, cause i love this place to death. It's the greatest source possible for ANYTHING RX-8. I just wonder why so many people, aside from pointless instigators, have no urge to even have any affiliation with the 8, but still keep returning for no reason.

Somewhere along the line this has to have ties to the metaphor of a dog returning to it's vomit.

your bro is getting lousy mpg in the city then... if i drive it soft (enough to get 18mpg in the rx8)....I would be getting well over 25mpg.

anyways, I did figure out how to put snowboards in as well... -_- Lean the passenger seat all the way back, and seatbelt the snowboards in.

I'd agree that RWD is more fun -_- I wish the si were rear wheel.
