Trading in AT for MT
I am wanting to Trade in my 2004 AT 8 for manual transmission. I'm not experienced in Trade ins or of the sort. What is there to expect? Any tips or hints would be helpful.

Shock and Awe
Use the blue book for what to expect.

It will give you an estimate on what you will get for your trade-in

I did it. I had to put $2000 down to make up the difference. I traded in a GT AT for a sport 6spd. it is such a big difference in power its like night and day, I never regretted doing it.

Definitly get the NADA value. When I traded my wife's Jetta for a 4Runner, I busted out the Kelly Blue Book trade in value, which was around 13K. The dealer said: "Oh, we don't use kelly blue book, we use NADA". So, I busted out my print out from NADA, which had the value @ $16K. Suckers.
If at all possible, you should sell it yourself. It's a hassle sometimes, however you'll get more for it.
Gook luck!

Stuck in a love triangle
When I swapped my sport package AT with 30k miles on it for manual, it cost me five grand, but I moved up to a yellow stick with nav system, accent package, spare tire and spoiler. If I sold it myself I probably would have saved 2k but didn't have the time.
This was also way before the 6 speed automatic came out. I don't know how bad the trade in value is for the 4AT at this point but I can't imagine a Mazda dealership giving you a decent amount for it when they have 6ATs on the lot now. You'll probably have to sell it privately.
Keep in mind that there's also a supercharger coming out soon that has been tested on the 4AT and has had great results.
