Trunk mount bike rack

Trunk mount bike rack
I am going to GA for about 6 months for some training for a new job. The "campus" I will be on has strict rules about no vehicle traffic between 7AM and 5PM. I want to bring my mountain bike with me to get around easier during the day. I have a Saris Bones 3 trunk mount bike rack that I've had for like 8 years, but I have yet to use it on my 8. I read through some other posts about bike racks and one person said this rack caused the rear bumper to dent in slightly, but it returned to normal after a couple of hot days. I would only be using the rack to get the bike from here (central TX) to GA about 1200 miles and then once again to return. Does anyone have any experience using this or a similar rack? Would it be better to wrap the rubber surfaces of the mount which make contact with the paint with something like microfiber detailing towels to cut down the possibility of scratching? I would not be able to place it unassembled in the trunk as I will be taking 6 months worth of clothes, work equipment and entertainment (PS3, computer etc.). Would it be better to attempt to fit it in the rear seat area (if that space isn't already being used) on an old blanket or something. Buying a hitch or roof system is out of the question at this time also. Thanks for any input on this.

Just buy a cheap bike when you get there.....plan for the worst case scenario....i personally would not put a bike in my trunk.........look at Craigslist, Ads, I'm sure you will find something cheap........

Buying one when I get there is not completely out of the question. I mainly wanted to bring mine with me in case I wanted to do any serious trail riding on the weekends while I was there also.
