which type oil do you use?
#26
Havoline 5w20
I ran it to 268k miles in the Explorer I traded for my RX8. Can't be all that bad. I don't have anything against synth. I use it in my wifes Mini Cooper S, but if I've got to pour in an extra quart every few tank fulls on purpose, I don't see the sense of spending that much extra money.

I use castrol GTX 5W20. I'm amazed that at least 1/4 of the people on this board know more about what kind of oil should go in the car than the Mazda Engineers. You guys must have done thousands of hours of double-blind testing on several engines?

I run non-synth in both the 7 and 8. Mobil 1 in my other two non-rotary cars. Don't mind paying a little more if it can help save me big bucks in repairs down the road. Plus, I tend to keep my cars for longer than most.
Filled up with Chevron 92 today. Plan to start an additive soon too.

Many are going on past practices of using synthetic. And also on the word of several aftermarket sources that have a lot of respect in the rotary community. Look at it this way, Racing Beat has probably the best reputation amongst this demographic. Nothing they do is radical, but instead are relatively conservative modifications. For many, they're too conservative. For all their years of research and development, they sell synthetic for rotary engines. Mazda racing efforts have used synthetic for years, etc...
I personally could care less what anyone else uses. But I do use Royal Purple. The reason I do is because I have enough years of experience with using synthetic to be confident that it won't ruin my engine. And I trust some of the tuners that have personally recommended it to me. So it's really not me that thinks I know more than Mazda engineers.

What MazdaRich fails to understand is that the latest recall is for North America only.
The reason for this is two fold:
1) For emissions and fuel economy, they recommend and use 5w20 oil, which is too thin.
2) Also for emissions, they cut it too close with the MOP profile, and injected too little oil into the engine.
Other countries use 5w30. They do not have the NA recall. Other countries also have synthetic oil, they do not have the NA recall. Get the picture?
As has been pointed out before, even Mazda Japan (The company that put together your RX-8) says the RENESIS is fine with synthetic. The new o-rings are not harmed by it. See attached scans.
Mazda as a whole does not recommend synthetic for ANY of their cars. How many of you synthetic bashers can come up with a reason for Mazda doing this?

I thought RG said it best when he said that the reason Mazda doesnt come out and say "Use Synthetic Oil but dont use XX Brand because its bad" is because they'll get sued the moment they do. So instead of saying that they just say dont use ANY synthetic oil, its much safer that way Legaly for Mazda. And I agree with that.

Sorry to say but, how many people here are actually not even Junior high school grad ? forget about the non-recommend part. why do people some people always want to ignore facts from actual user (like me and tons of other people) but choose to believe what Mazda lawyer's said. on the other hand, they put aftermarket parts into their car, totally ignore the fact that Mazda against those.

I am not denying that some people are doing fine with synthetics. I agree with RG that "some" of them cause a problem, which would prompt the blanket statement to use none. Since my oil changes are totally free to me at my dealership every 3000 miles I really see no need to spend a lot more money to tell them I want synthetic put in my car, especially since there isn't a problem using regular oil.
My car has no aftermarket parts either.
