umm? wtf warrenty. Question!

Okay so today we took the car into the dealership about the Cat converter, and asked about the 8yr warrenty for the fed emissions. anyways the guy said they would take alook at it.

He printed out the paper- "Mazda North america operations Warrenty Vehicle Inquiry report"

Heres to my 'Wtf??" =)

Vehicle Bought 7-29-03
Warrenty term information
Power train 60 months 60k miles - End date 7l28|2008

Then below that "Recalls / Special Service Programs"

SSP67 Powertrain Warrenty - Start date 8-21-2006 - Status Open.

The dude at mazda couldnt tell me what that meant.

as far as i can tell its a extended warrenty... am i right?

That extended warranty is the 8year 100,000 mile warranty on the Engine Core that Mazda voluntarily provided to all RX-8s. It is NOT as complete at a powertrain warranty, but if your engine fails between 60,000 and 100,000, then the core engine replacement and labor is available under warranty.

don't take this to mean it's a free engine though, as you will still usually have to pay $500-$600 in fluids, seals, gaskets, hoses, etc... for the stuff that needs to be replaced that isn't part of the actual engine core. Some people get off lucky and don't get charged that, others do, others only get pieces, etc...

Hmmm

SSP77 Rotary Engine Core W Start date 5-30-2008 status Open
then theres
SSP67 Powertrain Warrenty Start date 8-21-2006 Status open

Both listed for just engine?? I Figured someone bought a extended power train in 2006.

Oh, you are correct. That is separate from the core warranty, and certainly does imply that the original owner had purchased an extended warranty.

Lucked out? Might be worth a shot asking them about the transmission then too.

okay hes basically saying he cant see if its transferable.... How the **** cant he see that?? hes also saying he cant see when the extended warrenty was bought. or how long its for.

Hes also saying theres no Check engine lights coming on, but his techs say the Cat converter is definatly failing. and he wants all the maintance history we have for it. he thinks someone erased the engine codes....

Um, ok. There isn't any maintenance that affects CAT life that Mazda requires. Coils do, but coils aren't required.

The only thing that can void your cat warranty is if you physically altered it somehow, either through cutting, drilling, poking out the honeycomb, etc...

If he gives you too much trouble about the cat, call up Mazda North America Operations. They agree it's failing, and can't legally not replace it at this point. There also isn't any maintenance that will clear a check engine light. And even if it did get cleared, that doesn't change anything, as running the battery dead will clear it. Clearing the codes also doesn't void any part of any warranty.

Not sure what he is trying, so go in armed and ready.

It looks like SSP 67 starts with the original warranty start date.

He wants to keep the car over the weekend to see if the Check engine light comes on..... ???
He thinks that whoever flashed the car messed it up to where the CEL isnt coming on when it needs to. and he agrees the Cat is definatly failing and is concerned why the CEL isnt coming on.

I can reach MNAO here right ? 1025 Connecticut Avenue Northwest
Washington, DC 20036-5418
(202) 467-5088 ?? funny thats about 20 mins from my house haha

Would they be able to tell me when the Powertrain warrenty was purchased and if its transferable? from what i read on their website it says "Extended warrentys are renewable and transferable".... i hate dealerships.

Yes, MNAO will be able to tell you when it was purchased, and if it still applies to you.

If he is wanting to take it strictly to see if there is a PCM/ECU issue, and he is actually concerned, then I don't see an issue with it as long as you get it in writing that you won't be charged for that diagnosis.

I'd find out if that warranty is still active first though.

Okay just got off the phone with the lady at MNAO. She said the transmission is no longer covered. (booo) ohwell. The Cat Conv however is Still under warrenty!
and shes documenting the call incase i have any more problems with the dealership.

If theres no maintence that effects cat life then why ask for it? lol

Just finished searching through all the History that the Previous owner gave me. There was 3 Previous owners, and only info from the 2nd owner.
First owner theres no info about(that i have like recipts), except Carfax shows 3 Services he had the car new until 24k miles

Second owner i have all the info on he had the car until 40k miles.

and third owner had the car until 57kmiles and he gave me nothing but what the 2nd owner gave him.. except a gas cap replacement recipt / tires n stuff. That would have been 5 oil changes. I left him a message to see if he has any digital bank records of buying stuff from AUto zone he can Screenshot and email me. but hes in the middle of PCSing to Japan lol.

i think i read somewhere, where they cant deny me Warrenty work by law if i dont have previous owners records? That i just have to provide MY paperwork that I took care of the car properly

Yup, in any warranty fight, the dealership/manufacturer has the legal burden of proof to deny a warranty. Providing service receipts simply eliminates ground of contention for the dealer. And the dealer still has to prove that a lack of maintenance caused a particular failure.

Since there isn't any required maintenance that affects cat life, he won't be able to prove a direct link between no maintenance records and cat failure. Even if your engine failed, they would have to prove a lack of maintenance.

I made a MUCH longer post to a prospeective owner here: (https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...08&postcount=8) about warranty work and claims, etc... if you want to read it. The full thread might be useful as well.

I went through a 3 year warranty legal battle with Toyota and one of their Maryland dealerships, and I learned alot during that time.

Hah! Yeah, I want to spare people that pain. I got the shaft in the end due to a crappy lawyer, didn't have his stuff straight and when he got deathly ill and had to shut down his practice, it was too late and too jacked up for another lawyer to pick up in his place.

Good luck and let us know how this plays out. I'm concerned because My 8 is purchased used as well. All previous maintenance was done at a dealership in another town. I called them or records and they said they lost all records in computer system failure. I am keeping all receipts for my maintenance. I do all regular maintenance myself. Been to the local dealership once for a couple msp's that were not done at other dealership, and did not get a warm fuzzy feeling from them on warranty work.

Check MazdaUSA.com. If the service was done at a Mazda dealer, the records should be there. Worst case, MNAO still has the records. It would have to be a company wide failure to wipe them out, and not even a peep of that so I bet it was local to that dealer.

well i got the previous owner on the phone and went through his maintence records with him and uploaded it up Mazdausa.com. (gona print it out tomorrow i guess)
Already copied and dropped off all the paperwork i have of the car.
When i spoke to him he kept mentioning that he needs the CEL to come on. And it old him we've had the car for 9 days, We drove it 1000 miles already with no CEL yet on it.. Could possible we caught the Cat failing just in time before the CEL came on?? he said "yeah that is possible".... lol
Apparently i have to wait till monday or tuesday to hear back if its going to be covered underwarrenty...
i told him, if it isnt going to be covered under warrenty then i dont want it replaced and ill do it myself.

If he says they won't cover it, call up MNAO, cause they WILL.

It's been 4 years since I dealt with that dealer, so no idea how much has changed.
