True, but then he would have only gone from 4th gear to 3rd gear, and I doubt that would be significant enough to cause the tires to completely lock up like that.
The question here is IF he DID misshift, it is possible (since the gears are so close together) that instead of going up and "throwing" it to the right that he might have gone up and "thrown" it to the far left. Unlikely, but possible...

At this point, all we can do is speculte and wait to see what Mazda says about this.
PLZ post an update as soon as you have it...

REALLY glad to hear that you were able to walk away from this and that you're felling okay!

Oh, I clicked on your link and it said that your bandwith had been exceeded so I wasn't able to view the pics...

The rev limiter does nothing to prevent over revving on a downshift. The rev limiter cuts fuel and spark to prevent over revving under power. There's nothing mechanical to prevent over revving on a downshift. A piston engine on a severe over rev will bend something, like a valve or rod which could cause the engine to lock up which would also lock up the rest of the drive train.

Any updates on this? Glad to hear you're OK. I have nothing new to add to the discussion; I just want to know the verdict.

Sounds like a problem with TSC. Causing brakes to engage. I dunno, just guessing, but I bet Mazda/dealer is on the hook. Glad you're ok.
