I do know it was a life savor and time savor for oil changes. Plus when performing a manual oil change I would get just as much liquid out when using this product...

Let me know what you think..

Thanks,
You might want to check the DIY section. There are many threads on oil changes. Most of us use a drain pan and raise the drivers side a little more than the passendger side since the drain plug is on the right side.

No matter what you do, you'll only drain about half the old oil in the 8 since the oil coolers and lines hold about 3 quarts. Haven't heard from anyone yet that has drained the coolers.

The pump that Griots sells is actually made by Pela. I was thinking of getting the pro model since I have 5 cars in my family to perform oil changes on. Check out this sight since they currently have the Pela Pumps on sale. http://www.jerrybleach.com/pelapumps.html

bmillerrx8, how has the pump held up? Is it a quality product in your opinion?

I've been using it for several years now. It's more convenient on the BMW since the oil filter is easily accessible through the engine bay. For any doubters, yes it does get as much oil out as the traditional drain plug method. I did a 30k mile test and did not find any appreciable sludge buildup in the oil pan.

And for the record, do a search before asking a question. I posted about this subject over two years ago. https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/oil-extractors-work-sort-rx-8-a-10198/

This method has been used for many years for boat engines. They even have a threaded fitting on the dip stick tube.

But I still prefer to use gravity so that the heavy contaminates drain out the bottom. I also can inspect the underside of my 8 for any damage from road junk.

Just as a side note to oil changes...the past two changes I have used 6 qts to do my oil change. I drain the oil pan, replace the plug and then pour two new quarts in. I let that sit for a few minutes and then drain that. You guys should try it, you will be amazed at how absolutely filthy the oil is that comes out. Put your finger in the stream as it comes out. The old oil that is still in the coolers/piping/engine can be seen quite clearly against the new oil. Even after flushing with two quarts, the oil still wasnt as clean as I would have liked so i am going to do three next time.
Just a thought for you guys (and gals).

I wouldn't even know what to do with the oil after doing the oil change...

I'll stick to the $25 alternative.

The 8's filter is easily accessable from the engine bay, no reason to "get down there"

Most states have laws that dictate that any place that changes oil as part of their business has to take your used oil and filters. Gas stations with service bays, oil change shops, car dealerships will all take used oil. There's no place in the country that doesn't have one or all of the above.

http://fumotovalve.com/ I have this valve sitting on my work bench just waiting to be installed on my truck during the next oil change. If it works good draining 15quarts of oil out of my diesel engine, I'll get one for the 8 & 7.

bmillerrx8, have you thought about installing one on your 8? Since the oil drain plug can be reached without lifting the car the fumotovalve should make oil changes on it easy too

I installed one on my 8 with the first oil change. It's very convenient and very easy to avoid any mess or hot oil on your hands.

FYI, the adapter is needed on the RX-8, at least it was on my 2004 MT-6sp.

I have used the Fram SureDrain kit on all my cars, the RX8 uses SD-2, its about 12 bucks at any auto-parts store, its all brass and is a direct fit. I dont use any other fram products, but this drain valve works really good.

I can reach under the car withough jacking it up. I use those disposable turkey pans, slide it under, drain the oil, then pout it into a plastic cat litter jug and take it to peb-boys.
