With the right tires my 8 does just fine in the snow (I live in Massachusetts). I put Dunlop Winter Sport M3's on, and it's awesome. With the TS/DSC it very predictably throws the rear 90 degrees when you corner and hit it. Recently when it was very icy out, I had to drive, and occaisionally the back end would start to slide out on ice, but let off hte throttle, and it came right back into line.
I've lived here almost my whole life, so I grew up driving in the snow, and had 2 rx7s before the 8. I love rwd sports cars in the snow.

The car does horrible in very small amounts of snow.
I've driven for over 35yrs. in Michigan and Northern Illinois winters. My 8 is on the road year round. It's been said before, but it needs to be said again. It's the tires that makes the difference. The OEM Bridgestones are terrible in snow. Apparently the OEM Dunlops are a bit better.

I have driven quite a bit in the snow here in Canada and I still have a hard time in snow if it is fresh. And after I got into an accident last year, the nightmares always come flooding back when there is a snowstorm around.

So, I suggest you get a car with AWD or a SUV. I was in a SUV and it saved me big time. Get an automatic so that you can have hands on your steering wheel for better control.

In the end, have a safe trip and come back and tell us all about it.

You might not die, but you might feel like you did. I have driven in snow all my life and when I took my 8 out (STOCK TIRES) that is, I could barely keep the car on the road. That's if you can even get it out of first gear since the tires hardly have any traction on the snow.
Just my opinion, don't do it. Rent a car or get snow tires. Renting a good front wheel drive car or 4x4 will make your trip much happier.

Driving in snow

I made the mistake of taking my rx-8 up to big bear with stock tires thinking there would be no snow. It was impossible to drive, even with chains. Do not attempt. I swear I almost hit 3 cars, thank god the roads were dry once I got out of Big Bear City.

was at teh missus nans house a few weeks back when a snow storm hit! 3 inches in minutes so i grabed her and jumped in the car..........Lively is the word i would use (esp as i have summer tyres on ..never buy tryers cos the tread looks cool) anyway took it slow for the 20 or so miles home!

i was impressed really as although traction when pulling away was non-existant once moving it was ok, but i was on tiny back roads for quite a bit bit of it so i could stay at 20mph and not really worry about others!

if i had the option i would of borrowed the sisters X5 but once stuck you have to work with what you have!
