Question Very Confused????

I have been looking at a few different cars to purchase within the next couple of weeks, and the two cars that I have narrowed it down to are the RX8 and the G35 SC. Now I had been leaning towards the RX8, but someone just recently told me that there is something that you have to do to the oil or gas, I don't quite remember at the moment, that is necessary every couple of hundred miles. I am pretty sure it was the oil, but either way, please tell me if there are any concerns with this. I know that the RX7s of the past had an issue with the oil and changing the oil more frequently, but not every couple of hundred miles. If anyone can inform me about any issues that the RX8 has, I'd really appreciate it. I wouldn't want to make a wrong decision. As well, the dealer also told me that once you pass that 1000 mile mark, the RX8 really opens up and you receive a 10% increase in power. I've done a lot of research and I haven't heard this before, so if anyone has info on that, it would really help out. THANKS.

Hmm, the only special thing about the oil is the type to be used 5-20. They recommend to check your oil level every other fill-up. But other than that, follow the guide lines in the owners manual which says to chance the oil every 5000 miles. But others prefer to change it more often.

As for the opening up past the 1000 mile mark. That's just BS he's feeding you. Some people have stated that they felt an increase in power after a certian mile mark. But that rumor has not been confirmed.
They owners manual states not to redline, or run at high RPM's for an extended period of time, for the first 600 miles.

Nice choices on your two cars, I was in the exact same boat as you, and I chose the RX-8. I'm very happy with my purchase. I don't think you could go wrong with either choice...

some owners might check their oil every couple hundred miles. Many of us are previous RX-7 owners, which did consume more oil than the 8 is designed to. It is injected into the rotors to keep things lubricated that need it - and to me, if mine were to stop or slow using it, then I'd might have knowledge of a pending problem. But realistically it'd be too late if I did. The rate of useage I recall reading in all of the hundreds of hours before the car came out was estimated to be 1 qt per 10,000 miles. Reality seems to be more like 4000. But most will change their oil before that so adding may not be required. My suggestion is : buy the 8 ; check it soon after buying it -maybe before driving it, just to see where it is initially, then after maybe 300 miles ; then maybe again at 600. You'll get a feel for what it may be using as a guideline. At 600 you'll start revving it higher as you'll be past the break-in period, and so I'd say , check it again about 1000. Now you'll have another reference point. The harder you run, it the higher the use and the more frequent you would want to check it. The gap between "H" and "L" on the dipstick represents 1.8 quarts. Personally - I'd prefer for it to never get 1/2 way to "L", or .9 qt from high. The only other thing I'll add is you now have the chance to test drive an 8. I signed all of my paperwork before even driving mine - I'd only seen it driven from the truck to a parking space, and waited 18 months for that moment to arrive. I like the smoothness of the rotary, and the long life with which it will generally reward it's owner.

It uses less oil than an RX7 but more than a regular car. Its not a big deal though. I had to put a quart in after 1500 miles, cost me $2.10.

Dealer told me to check oil every other time you fill up the tank with gas. 4 Fill ups later and the dip stick still reads full, I guess some cars burn oil faster than others... or perhaps I didnt burn any since it was during the 600 mile break in and I didnt take the tach past 5500 rpm.

/shrug

The oil thing is no big deal, I am just paranoid about the cold start flooding issue, but once again easily avoidable.

Yeah i think i burned a lot of oil due to the way i drive. Its worth it though hehe.

Thanks for the replies! I have driven both cars and I enjoyed both of them. Even though the G35 SC felt more powerful, I felt really comfortable driving the RX8. I feel that the SC is more for an older crowd...the only reason is because it is more luxurious on the interior than the RX8. But the RX8 feels more fun! Overall I think it is a cooler car than the SC and I think my decision has been made! Now the only thing left is to chose the color!?! What did everyone chose?

Look at a few long posts and check out the pics below the user name. The car next to my 8 is my 1988 RX7 I sold a few days after taking delivery.

Velocity Red is the best color and actually tested faster than the other colors that's why Mazda changed it from Mica Red to Velocity Red.

I almost bought the sunlight silver, but the titanium grey won out.

They all look nice to be honest, my least favorite was the yellow, black seems to hide some of the styling charachteristics.

Red and Yellow will probably turn more heads however .

Dont forget

The blue is very good to. its great if i forget where i parked i just look for the nicest blue car out there and boom i found my baby(LOL). But its a great color and its rare u dont see much blue cars on teh road, which i love i like to be rare.

I wish we could get rid of the term "burn oil', especially when talking to people who are new to the rotary engine. That term is associated with a car that is not operating properly.

The oil in a rotary is consumed by design, and is meant to lubricate, not be a combustion byproduct. There are oil injectors which inject miniscule amounts of oil into the engine to lubricate the seals. This is perfectly normal, and that is why you can just wait 7,500 miles for your next oil change without checking it.


Sooo,

Burn Oil = BAD;

Inject Oil = GOOD;

We need the seperate oil reservior available to the Renesis taht lets you have a seperate tamk for injection purposes rather than taking dirty oil from the engine. You can get them for all the other rotaries. It's only a matter of time. Here's the link to what I am referring to.
