Very confused about what package my RX8 actually has
Ever since i got the car i have been comparing the options i see on my 2004 vs options listed on sites like edmunds, posts here and now finally i came across an options list on mazda usa which is show as 2004 specs....
http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/pdf/..._specs_RX8.pdf
As i go down the lists i'm finding a wierd cross of sport vs GT options. For example the linked pdf lists halogen fog lights as a GT only option, but they are clearly installed on my car. Some of these options like fog lights could be due to someone installing them later except i also have the moon roof which i consider a keystone option which is only on the GT model.
It gets even more confusing when i get into the interior options. I have things like the homelink mirror, leather seats, power driver seat, and heated seats which are all GT options. However i don't have advanced entry, auto climate control, bluetooth, or rain sensing wipers which are all supposed to be GT standard options.
The clincher is the dang radio. My door tweeter speakers say bose right on them yet i dont have the 6 disc changer. That or the changer functionality is broken. Either way bose was a GT only option. Toss in that the previous owner said the car had the sport package and you have one confused new rx8 owner. From what i can tell the sport package was the normal basic package. So unless the maxda sheet is incorrect and the other info i have is not 100% then does anyone know what the deal is with this thing?
Thanks

Took me a while to figure out my package as well because my car is a frakenstein of the option: I have the touring Package due to above mentioned items plus Appearance and Rotary Accent package. The part that threw me off was the nonpower, etc two tone leather seats, but I determined from the door panels and the steering wheel that these were put in after. Steering wheel and doors panels are also supposed to have the accent color of the seat as well, but mine do not. Remember that most likely the previous owner was just into mods as you are and if you aren't the original owner these types of changes could be present.
Edit: Even my signature still says GT lol

I focus so much on this because im tired of cars from this decade not having aux input jacks and was happy when i thought it at least had the changer so i could dump in a bunch of music that way.
Is there a VIN tool or something that could tell me what installed packages came from the factory?

No appearance package:
You have the GT.
The 6 disc changer was optional for ALL trims, and was not included automatically in ANY trim level.
Other notes:
- Moonroof was included in Touring and GT, optional in Sport
- Appearance package was optional for all trims, not automatic for any trims
- rear spoiler was optional for all trims, not automatic for any trims (and not inherently part of the appearance package, though they are usually together)
Google XLink MP3 Adapter on here. You need to test your head unit version number, but I use that and love it. Haven't ever used the CD player.

The packages changed over the years. The Mazda site shows 2011 packages. If your car is 2004, things were packaged differently back then.
If it's a 2004, and if you have leather, then you have the GT.
If you have silver triangles front and back, then you also have the Rotary Accent Package added.
If you have flares by your rear wheels, you also have the Appearance Package.
I believe things like the CD-changer were options on top of the packages.

Thanks guys for the info, it was very helpful. I double checked the rotary accent yesterday and have the nice shiny triangles front and back, but while im pretty sure i have the front air dam im not sure about the side skirts. I'll check when i get home now. If so it basically has all the possible options which is awsome! When i first looked at it i knew it was "sport" 6spd and leather which was all i absolutely wanted but didnt know enough to know all the options. Makes the deal sweeter knowing its a fully loaded GT and not the base sport.
RWWIP - ill check out the mp3 thing you mentioned, thanks

2004 RX-8 mystery package?
Hi, I'm new to the site but a long time fan of the RX-8.
I'm wondering what kind of 2004 RX8 I've purchased today.
I'm thinking that it's a Sport because it's an automatic.
It has a 'rally shifter'(?) on the steering wheel & unheated solid color leather seats.
I think it has the appearance package but not the chrome rotary symbols in the front & back.
Is there a way I'm able to see what package I have or any other particular information by the VIN #?
Thanks for any help.

If you read the posts in this thread it can explain to you what package you have. You only mentioned leather seats which does not narrow it down very much, check the third post and compare what your car has.

It redlines at 7k=Sport

Despite the information in the third post, I am interested in the engine differences between the three packages. I'll be rereading the entire thread again with what little more I've learned within the last 24 hours.

If it redlines at 7K, it's an automatic.
The question is what year is it? Mazda changed the model designation about 2006.
It started as a un-named base model, Sport, Touring and Grand Touring.
It changed to Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. I believe the Sport came in two different levels, like the original base and Sport versions.

2004 Automatic
Hi, This car is a 2004 automatic.
The engine covers say Renesis. I'm not sure if that tells me anything. Would there be a sticker somewhere that tells me the details? I'm off to the dealership tomorrow to pick up the plates. I'll get more info there.(I left all the paperwork at the place.) o_0 Duhh...
I'm doing research on spark plug replacement and the type of oil to use also. The interwebs are full of contradicting information. =\
I'm still getting used to the shifter on the steering wheel. I've been driving a manual Focus ZX3 for years and I kind of miss the clutch feel but I'm much more glad to have more power.

The NGK spark plug is the only one that is "practical" for a street driven car. Even at that most people choke when they hear they are $20 each. Other plugs are available for performance cars but they cost even more.
Oil is an argument without any true test results on which is best. Whether conventional, synthetic or even what weight to use. There are plenty of threads out there to pick up opinions (and they are just that opinions) on what to use, if you choose to change from the Mazda specified specification. Further discussion on that topic need not continue here.

You have a Sport, and yes, it's the "fastest" because the Sport is also the lightest. Same engine, just less weight to hold it back. It's the preferred trim for people that race them, mainly because of the weight, also because of the increased headroom from not having a moonroof (helps with helmet clearance)
If the salesman thought it was a GT, he was just unaware or intentionally lying. Mine was the reverse. He thought it was a base, but it was actually a GT. It's not hard to find plenty of examples out there on the web where people have no idea what they are selling.

I have a 2007 rx8 Grand Touring - I don't have bose speakers , I don't have a sun roof, I don't think I have heated front seats or heated mirrors. Also I don't have fog lights

If it helps, I have a 04 GT with all of the features mentioned above. I have the original window sticker and it lists all of those in 1 optional package called the Grand Touring package.

I am trying to figure mine out too! I have a 2007, It has fog lights and HID's. it has no moon roof, it has a 6 cd disk changer and 6 speakers that i know of. the seats are not powered or heated also not leather. no navigation system, no Bluetooth lets just say it is not fancy at all. but you pull up my Vin number and it say's GT also my title says GT. where all of these options extras or did someone screw up my vin and title? It looks like a sport and has all the sport options, I really think it is just a sport version that had some paperwork issues.

You have a Sport. Whatever source you are pulling the info from is incorrect, or the "GT" you see listed doesn't actually mean that you have a GT. For example, run the VIN through any common VIN decoder on any 2005 RX-8, and they all say "Base/Shinka", which is meant to be an "OR", as you can't have a Base if you have a Shinka.
