HaHa. Looks very familiar. I have a black GT and someone smashed the side window and stole my powerbook G4=3500$$$$. I didnt have homeowners or renters insurance so I was screwed and that tiny window cost me over 300$. I know exactly how you are feeling. I loved that ******* computer and had thousands of pictures and songs on it. All my vacation pics gone. I also had a bunch of important **** in my computer bag as well. The thieves were actually able to get the powerbook out of that tiny window, prolly b/c the powerbook is so friggin awesome and small and light. Funny now I have renters insurance and i purposely leave my windows laptop in my car, in hopes that it gets stolen and I can get a new mac with the insurance money. HAHA

Another thing thats F'd up is 1/2 the people that work in our group (all the older ones) are setup in paid for apartments down the road that are gated and nice. I figured you probably didn't leave it in overnight. You've got good reason for your bosses to move you. "Paid for apts" sounds pretty nice...but make sure you're sockin' away for some real estate down the road.

wow...im so sorry man.

It pisses me off that we have such scum out there that either:

Think it's cool to steal other peoples stuff.
Think it's cool to damage other peoples property.

The other day I went over to my fiances house, and I had just gotten out of my car and was about 15 feet away...and some 10 year olds came out from a house....and not seeing me, the one told the other 'I dare you to throw something at that red car'....I turned around and watched...and the little ****** was going to do it! I pressed the panic button on my car and they just about **** themselves...then saw me and ran...I refrained from calling them many many bad words because of their age...but...I yelled "Santa doesnt exist!".

I try not to carry things in my car of great value...literally when I leave work...at most i'll have my lunch bag...and maybe a few papers...nothing expensive.

it did the worse of it is on the top flat part of the trunk where a large portion of glass landed and shifted around - i vaccuumed it up as best I could but still. The worse was my left suicide door which got two very large dents in it and some major scratched on it from whatever asshat piece of **** did this. The only way ive been making myself feel better about this is the fact that once the damage goes over "that point" of being 500 dollars which is my deductible... any and all damage will be repaired with no extra cost to me. So they could have dented everything or even hit it and all that would mean is that its in the shop longer. But i still cringe at the thought of my precious baby being hurt by ********.

i keep all my stuff encrypted. sucks about it though still. hope the cops find the people so they can get a slap on the wrist... too bad the cops won't even bother finding them unless they have hit about 50 cars.

Aside from asking your company to put you in an apt. I think that you should also ask them for some consideration to pay the $500 deductible. You are there working for them, you wouldn't be in the hotel if not for the contract that you are working on, your company is making a profit from your labor, so you should at least ask them.

all i saw was the color and make of the vehicle - the security camera's here suck with such a low resolution and having a high threshold for motion activaion. The cameras only were able to show a white guy driving with some passenger. Plates were not able to be made out due to the crappy camera and the fact at 8am the sun was hitting "just right" to **** up most camears.

What was the make model color? Maybe someone in your area can keep an eye out for someone driving with an XPS laptop.

Poor thing. Cheer up!

I'd be more than pissed over that. It sounds almost like they were waiting there; like they saw you put something in and then walk away so they decided to target your car. You know, with everything that has happened to you in the same place, it does almost look like someone is out to get you (it's the paranoia talking). Someone eggs your car and now robs it. Definitely be asking for that apartment since you have had some many problems with your property while staying in the location they chose to put you. At least you'd have better security with the gated apartments.

It will be interesting to see what happens because on the dell website im not seeing any XPS Gen2s im seeing inspiron XPS line of "badass" notebooks that are pretty similar to what I have for exacly the same price. I paid nearly 3000 dollars for this one a year ago (i know a long time in computer history) but if i can get it covered for say $2200 dollars + my 500 deductible contribution I can actually come out with a better laptop (core duo 2)

while that would indeed be nice - i would much prefer for none of this nonsense to happen and for me to have MY laptop back
Are you using Windows XP/NT/2K ? if so its possible to reset your password without unplugging it to another laptop. if its me, all I have to do is to boot up with NTFS support. and over write your master password file, its encrypted but I just gotta overwrite it with one of my own. It sounds easy but its a pretty complex process but sadly it could be done in a couple of mintues (if you know what you're doing, like me, I used to do this for a living :-))

but anyway .... Your battery might not be the part of the recall yet BUT did you know that Dell just add another 100K laptop to the 4.1 Mill recall ? meaning its 4.2 Mill recall. might have even more later.

Might still be able to burn them alive !

AES 256 bit is not that secure. but its enough to push some people away.

I personally like PGP better. but its just personal preference.

and have you checked as to the liability of the hotel?

Hotels are only liable if you are actually paying for the parking... If not, its usualy "park at your own risk"

The two times in the past that I have stayed at a Hilton they charged for parking, something like $5 a night. Don't know if it's different for him because he stays at one of those long-term/suites types places.
