Good morning Rotor Heads!,
Well, my 8 is still in the shop... Wow, that's like 4 weeks right? I called Friday to see how things were progressing and they have still yet to receive the parts...Hmmmm. Is this engine going to be replaced? I'm thinking that our RX8 community would love to know...
There is something in the works but I'm reluctant to post until they've lived up to their end of the bargain... It would be a bit like rating a burger joint before you take a bite. At any rate, thanks to the local guys for keeping in touch- I haven't ruled out a meet at the dealership as a show of support. I'll continue to keep everyone posted.

I just had to reply to that last post! Some updates- I still don't have my RX8. I'm still driving a loaner. I've heard that my parts are in. Soon I will share with everyone how this all went down.

 

Are they covering the cost of the loaner?

 

Whatever happened with this?! I was on the edge of my seat reading this thread, and because this happened so long ago, felt certain I'd reach a conclusion by the end. Please share Windcharger!

Hey Beodude, there are plenty of 5W20 oils that are fully dino oil. Who wrongly told you all 5W20 were semi-synthetic ?

I play it safe with the warranty and only use dino oil in my RX8. In my past race RX7s I used Amsoil full synthetic, but also took full personal responsibility for paying for any and all engine work on my modified cars.

On another point, as wrong as Mazda is for denying this engine claim, the reality is that they HAVE gotten away with denying loads of these claims for any engine they can prove used synthetic and semi-synthetic Oil. Mazda just posted a $1 Billion dollar loss with last year's sunami and hard economic times worldwide. Sales are up this first quarter, so that is promising.

Just keep fighting for your claim. Deal with Mazda USA directly, not the dealer, over this issue. Get your lawyer involved, if just to write a letter or make a direct call.

My 2006 owner's manual only says it recommends 5w20, and nothing about synthetic or conventional.

 

Through '06 the US owner's manual did not say anything about synthetic. I'm not sure how Mazda got the "no synthetic" bit out into the world, unless they considered the DVD to be an official part of the manual.

Later OMs (beginning in '07, I think) said no synthetic.

FWIW, Valovline told me that all 5w20 oil has synthetic stock.

Yes this seems to be an old thread with no final update if the guy got his engine. Let's hope he did.

Ken-X8 I have used Castrol 5W20 for years in my stock RXs and it is completely dino oil. I can't speak for Valvoline. There is no problem refining 5W20 grades out of pure dino oil.

In my race-prepared RX7s I used full synthetic Amsoil . In those modified engines, built by Racing Beat and Pettit racing, I was staying at high rpms all the time and the synthetic oil was the right choice for engine longevity. In my stock RXs I used Castrol 5W20, changed every 3000 miles and have excellent results and stay in my warranties.

I've used Castrol for decades in all of my cars. I don't think I've ever used Valvoline, unless maybe in a previous car if there was a sale.

My 8 gets oil changes at the dealer every 3000 miles, and they use Castrol 5w20. Only about 45000 miles so far. I'll report back after the next 55000 and tell how it worked out.

Yeah, and what does the next sentence say? Does it say do not use synthetic oil period? Does it say the use of synthetic oil will void your warranty? The owners manual has been revised since that anyway.

This is one problem with mazda, it seems that most people who work for them have no idea what car is all about.

I bet the dude who wrote the us manual have zero clue of what rotary engine is all about.

And obviously they cant tell the difference between "recommended" and "reqiured", so funny some ppl gonna tell me 5w20 is good enough for this enigne when the bearing barely made it pass the 100k mark

Since 0w30 synthetic renisis rotary engine oil is the recommended genuine Mazda labeled product it does not make any sense for the owners manual to say do not use a synthetic oil.

Nor can a dealer logically say that synthetic oils void out warranties because if synthetic oil is the official oil then there is a good chance that synthetic oil was installed at the factory.

Nor does it make sense for Mazda to claim that synthetics result in poor cold starting performance.

The only logical conclusion is that this is a bogus translation of the original Japanese owners manual.

"Do not use synthetic or semi-synthetic oil" should be translated as "The use of a non-synthetic or a semi-synthetic will cause cold starting problems."

 

Correct.

Mazda simple couldn't provide a positive recommendation for synthetic, but never issued a prohibition against it's use. Dealers are just as subject to misinterpretation as other human beings.

According to the Japanese owners manual synthetic oil is the only oil that Mazda recommends that is of course the genuine Mazda Synthe-Renesis 0w30 synthetic oil.
Other oils are listed in the owners manual but these oils do not receive Mazda's highest recommendation.

For a dealer to say that synthetic oil is not recommended would be like saying that genuine Mazda parts are not recommended.

What the dealer is really saying is that he refuses to import geniune Mazda synthetic oil so as far as he is concerned the product does not exist.

Then the dealer presents the customer with a censored copy of the owners manual. By this censorship all instructions can then be twisted and taken out of context.

In the original Japanese owners manual owners are cautioned that if they choose an oil other than the recommended synthetic oil such as a non-synthetic or a semi-synthetic oil that cold starting performance could worsen.

The dealer changes the wording of the owners manual from "the use of a non-synthetic could cause cold starting performance to worsen" to "do not use synthetic oil otherwise cold starting performance could worsen." On that basis the dealer can void out a warranty if a synthetic oil is used. The dealer has even threatened to void out the warranty even if a genuine Mazda synthetic is used. Does it make any sense that a 0 weight oil voids out a warranty by causing cold starting performance to worsen?

 

No, it doesn't make sense.

There isn't much point in going on a crusade about it though, this is an old thread and your point of view is common knowledge.
