Red face Warranty New Engine

Hey guys,

I'm sure some of you have seen one post or another of mine... Anyway, after a month of having sent out the warranty approval request, mazda finally called me today and said that mazda approved a new engine and catalytic converter for me. They said it could take a while though as the last car they did took 6 weeks for the engine to arrive and because of what has happened in japan.

Anyway, I had some questions about this... Should there be any charges when they do the replacements? How long does it normally take once the engine arrives? do they pull out my engine and put in the new one at the same time? Is there any precautions I should take with my new equipment? Thanks guys!

There shouldn't be any charge for warranty work, unless they find something else wrong that is associated with the engine core. They can then refuse to put the new engine in unless you submit to repairing the problem. They claim this is to protect the warranty on the new engine.
If the service department has the time, they can start on it immediately. You can expect it to take less than 2 full maybe 3 days for them to install the engine. They can remove the old and install the new at the same time. It all depends on how busy they are and how the schedule their work. Once the new engine is installed, follow Racing Beat's brake-in procedure.

I wasn't charged anything, although I had a lot of other things done too while the engine was out to save on some of the labor charges.

I think it took 3 days to put the engine in, test things, etc.

Getting the engine only took about 3 working days too, but I've read how that really varies from days to weeks.

Precautions, I dunno, everyone has an opinion, lol. I've just been keeping the revs as low as reasonably possible until my first oil change (this saturday!) at around 600 miles

Just if it happens to mine, then i should know by then the cost and labor of replacing an engine under warranty. Thanks for the info.

I am going to guess he got his clutch replaced at the same time. Pretty much anything that is easier with the engine out can save labor charges for you. You didn't mention the miles on your car but you might consider a new clutch if they are high enough. It would suck to need to pay full labor 20k miles down the road.

Sometimes they give a rental, sometimes not. Not sure on the exact reasoning but people have posted they got no rental on here.

The rental cars are only provided for the original warranty period. They are not for the drivetrain warranty or the engine core warranty.

Yup, they recommended (and I agreed) to do clutch, engine mounts, plugs/wires/coils, SSV

They told me my clutch was OK for quite awhile still, but since it'd be replaced one more time at SOME point while I owned the car, it made sense to do it now.

I would recommend all of those except the coils, plugs and wires if you are a diy kind of person. At the dealeryou will still be overcharged for those and it is pretty easy to do it yourself. As for the others they are a lot easier to do with the engine out.

depending on the amount of mileage on her I would also look at replacing the OMP lines and nozzles.

Another thing to consider is asking the dealer to clean all the valves that are in the intake manifold while they have it out of the vehicle.

This way, you might not have the same troubles that some other members have had shortly after getting back their vehicles.

No need to do the break-in procedure, if you're getting your engine from mazda's these days. I got my engine replaced few months back and my Mazda Mechanic told me that my engine that arrived is new and is already broken through. (He told me that all engines that are coming from mazda these days for the past year- year and half are being built by mazda and break in procedures have been done already. So I suggest you find out if the engine is already broken through, so you dont have to go thru the hassle of driving like a granny.

Note that: Even when they told me the break-in procedure was done, I still followed the manual break-in procedure until 600mi keepin it below 4k rpms and below 5k rpms 600-1000mi. TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE.

Do you have the engine part# from your receipt? Just curious, as mine (replaced a few weeks ago) says N3H3-02-200R-V0, which when I Google it seems to be the remanufactured engine. Does yours say a different number?
