Weird noise coming from behind the shifter, under center console.
I have a winding type noise coming from under the center console. It goes away when the car is stopped. As it gains speed the noise increases. Maybe wind is getting in somewhere? The only thing that I could think of that's causing the sound is that the day before it stormed really bad and I hit really big puddle at the entrance to a gas station. Maybe that water did something? Its an 09 R3. Posting here because I feel like whatever it is could happen on a series 1 also. Wondering if anyone else has had their car make a similar sound. Here's a link to the sound.

What IS under there that would make noise in a speed related manner is the driveshaft. More specifically, where the driveshaft exits the transmission and its u-joint. Could be the u-joint itself (not super likely), or could be some of the aluminized foam insulation (more likely). I believe it's come loose on mine (I had it up in the air for an oil change a month or so ago), but I wasn't able to get up in there to figure out what clips came loose.
Please take plenty of photos, and document how you get to it, what came loose/broke, and how. If your noise is from the insulation, I'll likely be following in your footsteps this winter.

This sound has been available since I got the vehicle. It's coming from the mid control area under the part with the shifter/buttons. It is by all accounts there constant, motor on/off, in any event, for some time when the vehicle is locked (tried by locking vehicle with window actually open).
