weirdest thing happened today?

today in the afternoon after coming back from the gym something unusual happpened with my rx 8.What happened was i drove up to the drive way and rpm'ed to 4 thousound like i always do before turning it off.Well, after i turned off i got of the car and my FAN was still on or something turned on the engine i was like ok..my keys are in my hand how is this car still on ..so i turned back on real quick and turned it off again. and back to normal. Is this unusual or has it happened to anyone before?the only thing i remember not doing was turning of the ac but i dont think that has anything to do with it.

normal. your car is running the fan to cool it when things are too hot.

by putting in your key and turning it on then off, you're going to turn off the fan.

I don't think that would flood it, for two reasons:

1) You don't have to start up the engine. Just turning it to ACC is enough.

2) If the engine is hot enough to run the fan, I'm sure the car is warmed up

That's only necessary if your shutting it off cold.

I find it starts easier if you rev before you shut off in any circumstance.

It's not necessary when the car is cold. It does NOT stop your car from flooding. I can say that because the one time my car flooded was after a 10 sec rev.

that said, reving it can help spin fuel out the engine, warm or cold. So I do a quick rev to 3k and turn it off.

Keep your car warmed up before shutting it down, and get the upgraded starter and batt. Thats what will help keep the flooding down.

just a very small sampling of the threads available ont he subject . there ar emany many more. i am completly amazed that this has been normal since the 80s and yet there are so many people who have somehow never encountered it before even just walking past a car that does it. its even in the FAQ 3rd post

What mysql101 said, you just have to put the keys in the ignition and flip it once to turn the never-ending fans off. I get the same thing now that it's summer.

There was another member who was being a dumbass about how I should let the fans keep running, so that it would keep the internal parts of the car in good conditions. Yeah, cool it down when it can lose heat on it's own because of thermodynamics AND let my battery run out.

what? you're calling the people who say let the fans do their thing dumbasses?

please review any/ all of the threads and who said to let them run(including the FAQ). you'll find that the people who said it are the people farthest from dumbass on this forum.

you'e even misunderstanding/misrepresenting what mysql said- he said its NORMAL for the fans to run

The car cools itself with airflow. So even when it's 120 degrees out, your car should be able to operate normally. When your car is parked, it no longer can cool itself. The fan helps it cool down.

Given that the fan isn't going to run all day, that your battery charges up when you drive, and that this situation isn't going to happen when it's really cold out (batts drain faster), I don't see why this is a problem.

PS: First time the fan went on, I also made a post here asking about it

Let the fan run. It will stop after a few minutes. It is probably a bad idea to disable this feature. The car is not running the fan just to be funny. The RX8 is not the only car that does this. Even my wife's Chysler Minivan will have the fans run after a long drive in warm/hot weather. That is one of the advantages of electric fans versus fans driven by a fan belt. The car has a lot more control over their use. (I'm saying "their" because I can't remember if there is one or two fans. Our Minivan has two. I think the 8 has one)

My 87 Civic did this as well. It's normal, don't mess with it.

No, it stops the next morning when you turn your car back on.

Then you got problems dude...go get your car checked out. This is Texas and it gets HOT here the majority of the year. The fans WILL go off on their own. Sometimes they run for awhile. Yes it is loud, but it is perfectly normal. I have a build date of 7/03 with 41,000 miles on it and it still has the original battery so I am pretty sure the statement about draining the battery is bogus.

I don't think that the Mazda guys were stupid when they made the cars. If everyone has the same problem with their fans running after the car is shut off...do you really think it is a problem? Or wait...maybe Mazda was smart enough to manufacture the car with fans that run additionally to cool down our very HOT engine!!!

Agreed. Especially since the RX-8 is not the only car that does this. My old Toyota Celica did it on hotter summer days, as does my brother's Honda.

Im in Miami, I get the fans now after a spirited drive for as long as 15 mins and as short as 90 seconds (estimating). If yours arent stopping untill you come back the next morning, then there IS something wrong, go get it checked out. Otherwise, Id say let the fans do their thing, they were programed to go on for a reason.
Dont worry though, it wierded me out too the first time it happened, mostly cuz its so loud

I exaggerated....I'll try letting them run and see if they eventually go off.

I live in a condo building and I park right next to a gate everyone has to stop at inside of a parking garage. I get the dirtiest looks from people when I rev it up, and I just smile back :D

What for? It's not unique to the 8, and I bet it's in the manual somewhere.

I wouldn't blame someone for it with the 8...if is helps the longevity of the engine, i'll be the jackass

However, I've read guys over at the Cobra forums that thought it was cool to run their 4.6L DOHC's up to almost redline then shut them off because it sounded "cool". Now that...yea...then yur a jackass
