It can't go over 150 mph.

It's only got a 1.3L engine.

It has 4 doors.

Insurance rates are low for it.

It's unique design prevents you from (easily) having sex in the back seats with random girls.

The insurance rates are low for it? Compared to what?

Insurance rates are very low for it. They go by number of doors, engine size, among other things.

It costs less than a 15 year old 86hp 4 banger mustang to insure.

The number of doors prevent them from classifying it as a sports car

I'm paying about $120/mo for it. Thats with full coverage, 150/300 per accident, uninsured motorist, and anything else I could get.

Yeah! That is music to my ears. Going to use the insurance rates as a major selling point.

you can save 500-1000 dollars a year on insurance over a 350Z for example, but gas will cost you more, so make sure not to bring up MPG hehe...good luck

Is there anything that can be done to offset the gas mileage?

Maybe something that can be added to the car or something else?

I think the insurance rates and the safety factor should be your biggest selling points to your dad. Check this out http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/NCAP/Cars/2004MidS.html.

If you attach a super huge rice wing to the back, and install it vertically, you might be able to use it as a sail to harness the wind.....

In all seriousness, you should expect no better than 16(city) - 22(highway) mpg with the RX-8 in it's current form. If that isn't acceptable, you shouldn't be considering this car.

Yeah, moRotorMotor's right- check out the 5-star rollover test Also, DSC/TCS would be good safety features to point out.

That is clearly anectdotal. I'm a 22 year old single male living in a big city and the cheapest I could find insurance was about 1500 for 6 months. The other younger owners share my pain. My insurance company classifies it as a sports car....

What insurance companies are you all using? How come there is such a large difference in the insurance rates?

...and you stay with that insurance company because?

When I was 22, I was living in NJ of all places, driving of all things, two Porsches. I don't think your insurance is close to what I had. I don't recall it being that bad either, but as I said, it was a years ago.

PS: Your profile birthdate says you're 27...

Insurance rates vary greatly from state to state, from person to person.

It depends on what you drive, what your driving record is like, how old you are, what gender you are, and what zip code you park the car at. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things too.

Suffice to say, I found that switching insurance companies saved me about $200/mo from AIG Direct. Same cars, same location, same person. It's just that Amex doesn't insure high risk drivers. So you need a clean record with them.

yes the chances of you gettin laid go up by 300%... but the best thing to bring up would be the DSC and the rollover test

I am around your age too and I also have a clean record. But I live in Cali. I hope that doesn't make a big difference.

Any one here around 21, have a clean record and live in Cali? What is your insurance rate like?

I stay with them because they're the cheapest I could find! I mentioned that, I think. I'm not trying to bash you, I just hate you because you get cheap rates. My profile also says my location is "The Lounge", so that should tell you how truthful it is. I was born 9-1-81.

It also says I fight crime. As a superhero, of course.

Come on, guys; we can do better than this. How about:
  • Dynamic stability control
  • Traction control
  • Antilock brakes
  • Six airbags, including the new side-curtain ones the feds are advocating
  • Excellent crash-test ratings, including roll-over and side-impact
  • Perfect 50-50 weight distribution and nimble handling help you avoid accidents
  • Huge ventilated disk brakes all around; among the best of any car sold in the world; stops only a few feet longer than a Ferrari 360 Modena
  • Mazda got top reliability rating in a recent German (of all things) survey
  • low insurance
  • Good warranty
  • The ECU code is being updated periodically, often improving mileage and performance
  • Self-leveling Xenon headlights offer great illumination and last a long time
  • Pre-tensioning seatbelts
  • Anchors for infant seat tethers
  • Looks like a sports car but seats four adults in comfort, with four doors for easy access
  • CAN (controller area network) electronics are state-of-the art and should be very reliable
  • Excellent transmission
  • Reliable engine design with few moving parts
  • Limited slip differential
  • Excellent, loud horn
  • Fairly roomy trunk
  • Low maintenance costs
  • High resale value
  • Excellent interior details
  • Six speed transmission improves fuel economy
  • Factory alarm
  • Countless awards from car magazines
  • Extremely comfortable on long trips
(I know I'm re-capping some earlier points, here.) There must be dozens more ...
