It's unique design prevents you from (easily) having sex in the back seats with random girls.

Insurance rates are very low for it. They go by number of doors, engine size, among other things.
It costs less than a 15 year old 86hp 4 banger mustang to insure.
The number of doors prevent them from classifying it as a sports car
I'm paying about $120/mo for it. Thats with full coverage, 150/300 per accident, uninsured motorist, and anything else I could get.

I think the insurance rates and the safety factor should be your biggest selling points to your dad. Check this out http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/NCAP/Cars/2004MidS.html.

If you attach a super huge rice wing to the back, and install it vertically, you might be able to use it as a sail to harness the wind.....
In all seriousness, you should expect no better than 16(city) - 22(highway) mpg with the RX-8 in it's current form. If that isn't acceptable, you shouldn't be considering this car.

When I was 22, I was living in NJ of all places, driving of all things, two Porsches. I don't think your insurance is close to what I had. I don't recall it being that bad either, but as I said, it was a years ago.
PS: Your profile birthdate says you're 27...

It depends on what you drive, what your driving record is like, how old you are, what gender you are, and what zip code you park the car at. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things too.
Suffice to say, I found that switching insurance companies saved me about $200/mo from AIG Direct. Same cars, same location, same person. It's just that Amex doesn't insure high risk drivers. So you need a clean record with them.

Any one here around 21, have a clean record and live in Cali? What is your insurance rate like?

It also says I fight crime. As a superhero, of course.

Come on, guys; we can do better than this. How about:
- Dynamic stability control
- Traction control
- Antilock brakes
- Six airbags, including the new side-curtain ones the feds are advocating
- Excellent crash-test ratings, including roll-over and side-impact
- Perfect 50-50 weight distribution and nimble handling help you avoid accidents
- Huge ventilated disk brakes all around; among the best of any car sold in the world; stops only a few feet longer than a Ferrari 360 Modena
- Mazda got top reliability rating in a recent German (of all things) survey
- low insurance
- Good warranty
- The ECU code is being updated periodically, often improving mileage and performance
- Self-leveling Xenon headlights offer great illumination and last a long time
- Pre-tensioning seatbelts
- Anchors for infant seat tethers
- Looks like a sports car but seats four adults in comfort, with four doors for easy access
- CAN (controller area network) electronics are state-of-the art and should be very reliable
- Excellent transmission
- Reliable engine design with few moving parts
- Limited slip differential
- Excellent, loud horn
- Fairly roomy trunk
- Low maintenance costs
- High resale value
- Excellent interior details
- Six speed transmission improves fuel economy
- Factory alarm
- Countless awards from car magazines
- Extremely comfortable on long trips
