Plain old oil change. Used Castrol GTX 5W-20 conventional this time around.
Slightly overdue. I wanted to do it 500 km ago but just didn't have time. Old oil had 5501 km on it(3400ish miles).
Also got a UOA kit, so I am gonna send this sample off to see what's up.

Yeah, just plain old GT leather seats.

Replaced the coils and spark plugs this weekend due to hesitation and poor acceleration at low RPM, poor gas mileage, and slow (2 second) stars sometimes with the chirping noise. The difference is simply astounding, I used to have to fight to get her to move at under 5k RPM and now she starts right up instantly, pulls well from a start, revs faster, and spins the tires to engage traction control when shifting hard into second.
I bought the car like this about 6 weeks ago, and it was obvious someone had already replaced the coils once as one of the 10mm nuts had been replaced with a 11mm nut. The plugs looked ok but I replaced them anyway. Previous owner said he replaced plugs and wires last year but not coils. She's only got 31k miles.

Removed the engine and trans, split them apart, got a used S2 trans, picked up my reman engine, now I ordered everything needed to reinstall. starting to put back parts on the reman.
The whole process has been pretty easy and enjoyable. excited for the new trans.

Is that a Canadian only thing? I thought S2 only came in black. I guessed they were 40th Anniversary seats until you said they were stock S2 seats. Sometimes I wish I had 40th Anniversary or Shinka seats because I don't like everything being black. Sometimes I even think I should get cloth seats when it is 95 out and the hugging Recaros in leather are hot.

Assaulted the front LCA bushings with a reciprocating saw to cut the frozen camber bolts and replace them (and the bushings). That was fun. Not.
Took a couple of blades and lots of swearing. Managed not to damage the arms or mount points.

It's just that not a lot of them are ordered with red seats, I guess, just like most of them don't have the factory navigation unit(which I have; mine is a bit of a unicorn). Doesn't help that a lot of S2 I see are R3s; GTs are actually rarer.
Getting cloth seats means giving up a lot of other nice features, like HID headlights, seat heaters, sunroof, etc. I actually saw a red GS S2 without fog lights and sunroof. It also happens to have an AT. It's been on Craigslist for a while now.

Changed to XT-M5-QS today.
Shifts feel a bit better now; gears feel a bit easier to engage.

I have them as my daily pads and I hate them (initial bite is very average, gets too hot after just a couple of hard braking). I'm pretty sure the OEM pads were better.

I zeroed in on that, too. I'm also wondering why he wants more brake in the rear. Normally, you want the rear to lock up last, so the car stays straight, when the front lock. That's why I always run one compound lower in the rear--especially on cars without ABS.

Put them on, drive around the track?
I do run HP+ on the front, not HPS. As one would expect, stock pads burn down very quickly. I did one track day with them when I first got the car. Front and rear stock pads both overheated and faded to nothing within 2-3 laps at Summit Point.
Fair question. I perceive the rears are just along for the ride with HPS pads, given how long they last. With the large difference between front and rear brakes in the RX-8 and the controllable initial bite of the HP+ pads, I think matched pads might work. I could be completely wrong, but I'm going to try it. If it's squirrelly-as-hell I can change the rears in under 30 minutes between sessions, no sweat.
I learned how to race in a Spec RX-7 (first gen), which when set up to be fast (i.e. loose) will swap ends in the braking zone if there is a slight breeze blowing across the track, and has no ABS. I'm familiar with instability under braking.
Wish me luck.

Today, I replaced the front lower control arms, the camber bolts, all four sets of brake pads, and the front rotors.
Heat checks on the front rotors were getting bigger, and rotors are cheap.
I've had these on the car for a few years and at least 4-5 sets of HP+ pads. Damn little wear thickness-wise.
The front HP+ pads have worn very evenly. Probably 6-8 track days on these. Passenger outside pad wore more than the others for some reason.
I'll keep these pads around a while as "emergency" pads. A nice thing with HP+ pads is at ~$90 a set, I don't feel the need to use up every last mm of pad before I toss them.
Shiny Mazda New Goodness!

I've been running DTC-60 on all wheel and have yet to experience any lockup from the rear, so I would be very surprised if you see that happening with HP+

RX-8s have dynamic brake bias, so locking up the rears is less of a concern. In a car like my Miata, that has no ABS and no traction control, managing the rear bias is very important. In that car, I run one compound lower friction in the rear, and use one of these for fine tuning. In the RX-8, I just run one compound lower and let the car do the rest. Running square friction in an 8 is probably just fine, but I'm old and set in my ways. :p

Typically the same compound front & rear on the RX8 isn't an issue
I'll just add my usual kick in the gut and say that I hate the HP+ compound with a passion
I use the Porterfield R4-1, it takes a fine touch not to over brake, but plants the anchor when needed

Porterfield is on my list to try. Right now, I run Carbotech XP10 front and XP8 rear in both cars. They last a long time, and are very gentle on rotors. Very finicky about being bedded properly, however.
