Car was flooded, so I thought I'd try the towing method :-) worked like a champ, took maybe a little over a quarter mile and a little gray smoke.
I had a buddy with his diesel Jetta pull me down the street with the RX-8 in second gear and the ignition on. After about a quarter mile it started to sustain itself and would idle on its own, its been fine since.
this was much easier than the standard deflood procedure I've done before which is a PITA. Towing took all of 5 minutes to install the hook pull out some straps and head down the road. If I ever flood again in the future this will be the method i use next time.

Why is the factory deflood procedure a PIA, it's so easy a caveman could do it. Pull starting a car could go wrong quickly and if it doesn't work you will be towing that bitch back to your house.

Haha trolling 9k is trolling and wants people to think factory de flood procedure is not appreciably more of a PIA than a few minutes of towing.
But surely he was totes mcgotes srs bsns about that whole towing back to my house thing, which Ermahgerd would be so hard since I wasn't already towing it at the time any way. :-/
Seriously wtf?

In fairness it's not a trivial thi though,, I mean I've got the old crummy starter so I've got to pull up my wife's car and jumper cables and then eshaft connector and spark plugs and yadda yadda. I get that in the grand scheme of things it's not that hard. But what I did was way easier and convenient and it worked. Just wanted to share the success. I'm sure a search would turn up plenty of successes doing it by the book too. /rant

The factory deflood method doesn't involve anything other than one hand on the key and one foot on the gas pedal, which is what 9k was referring to. Nothing to do with the fuses or ess or spark plugs.
Jumper cables are recommended, but saying that hooking two cars together with jumper cables is harder than hooking them together with a tow lie wouldn't be accurate.

sorry i thought it would be apparent that since i had to resort to such a drastic and non-cavemanian method, that the method which doesn't even require me to get up out of the seat had been tried and failed.
Next time i will assume nothing is implied or understood as given :-)

Awww! Nate made sad9k sad :-(((
What did I do with my laptop today? I made sad9k sad!
Oh and RIWWP I'd like to think he was referring to this, which draws from the TSB i referred to and yeah this one is more of a PITA than what i did:

I just wanted to share my success, and 9k thought he'd imply that I might be more inept than a neanderthal because i did it an easier way.
Work smarter not harder dude.

New optima red top battery, cleaned power steering connector and added conductive grease, 20 brake pedal stomp, steering wheel full left and right, helping the ECU relearn the idle fuel trims...
It is good to review the process for reseting the DSC and everything after changing the battery. The power steering connector problem was just bad luck. I had no power steering for a while until I started checking fuses and voltages. I'm still surprised by the amount of corrosion inside that connector (at the bottom of 60 Amp EPS fuse).
