What to do with her?

I have a 2004 VR RX8 with the GT package. Purchased her when she was a pup back in August of 2003 and have become very attached to her. Well, I will be heading to Qatar in a few months and have to leave her behind. I will be gone for atleast a year and I am having some troubles deciding what to actually do with her.

I absolutely refuse to leave the 8 with anyone I know (I tried that with my old car when I went to Korea back in 2000 and couldn't have had worse results). The Army will pay for basic storage, but of course it will sit there rotting away for a year. I do have the MS kit, so one thought I had was to talk with the local dealership and try to come up with an arrangment that they could use my 8 as a display model (giving them a MS 8 on the lott, atleast a year before they are produced), in exchange for care and routine maintenance. Another idea I had was dropping it off at a tuner shop and have them drop a turbo in it and other groovy things, but the problem with that is once they are done, it will simply be taking up space in thier shop... I somehow doubt that would go over well. My only other option would be to sell her before I go.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Can't help you with the emotional issue, ultimately you will do what feels right.

From a financial perspective, it almost never pays to store a car for a year or more (except for collectibles). The car depreciates another year and you don't even get the benefit of using it at all. The 07's will be coming out soon after you return and are ready to jump back in.

If you decide to keep it, don't even think of anything but indoor storage.

Gosh sorry to hear you will be away fro a year, but GOD bless and be safe.

I too think, while this would be painful to do, you probably should sell her now to get the most out of her and when you come back you get an 07 with maybe alot more power directly from Mazda.

Also, you will save the money in monthly payments which you can use as a good downpayment later.

Yeah--I'd say sell it.

Sell it and buy a new one when you get back. Yeah you will miss her but I'm sure the new car smell of an '07 will assist you in getting over your feelings of loss and regret.

Jeez, I wish I could believe that. Of course, the rumor wagon had been spreading stories about a 30th anniversary RX7. Wont really know until it happens.

The dealership idea is out of the question. They told me today they couldn't do it due to the company's insurance policy. Looks like she is getting sold.
