What do you guys think of the RX-8 A/C unit on the hotest days? Tooling around after a raining day after 12:00 it got really hot, it took a long time for the car to cool and the A/C fan seemed weak.
What is your impression of the A/C unit on the hottest days?

for like 2 days i couldnt figure out why it wasnt working right i mean i could feel a little air... then my girlfriend started messing with it and i feel a huge gust of air. works amazing now.

Yeah, a/c seems to be weak in my '04.
The mode has to be set to front vents to get decent cooling. Bi-level venting reduces cooling effect.
Driving at highway speeds gives better cooling too as well as putting on recirculate initially.

My works fine in straight, upper vent mode, and OK in upper/floor vent mode, once the car is cool inside. But if it is really hot out, the upper/floor vent combo is damn near useless unless I've had the upper only on for about 30 minutes first.

My A/C really does a horrible job cooling the inside of the car. When I have it all blowing directly on me, it feels somewhat cold, but it never cools the entire car down. I have to crank it all the way to maximum to really feel anytihng at all.
This sounds like a common occurence with '04 models. Not sure if it was fixed for more recent years.

Programming a/c
I seem to remember reading something last year that there is a way to program the a/c to blow colder air. I've been searching but could not come up with it. You had to like push certain buttons in combination for specific amounts of time. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

Seriously, the A/C works great so long as the car is moving. Since the great switch from R-12 refrigerants, most modern a/c units are a bit more challenged. I find the a/c does get weak sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on a hot day, but once there is air blowing through the front end, it's quite cold.

it works fine if you can keep the temps inside down. Like dont let it sit in the sun with windows up.
If it heats up inside thanks to all the black it wont cool it down for ****.
If the inside is kept cool it can keep it cool with ease.

It does a decent job. I didnt buy the car to sit in a freezer durring the summer months. As others have said put it on reciruculated air after the car cools off a bit and it does get colder. I have a 04 model also and the split level is pure crap lol.. Myself I usualy have the windows down anyways unless its 90+ or I'm on the highway.

It's okay, like others said, use the recirculate button. However that being said, it does seem to take a while initally for the 8 to blow in cold air, had passengers complaining about how they can't feel any cold air coming. I dont think the 8 a/c is as strong as some other cars i've had in the past that were new. But it works decently, the only problem i've encounter is sitting in bumper to bumper traffic with it on, then it seems to sometimes blow some warm air.

The a/c in my 04 sucks. Whether at idle or on the highway, it gets cold, then warm...then cold, then warm, in 5 second intervals. For the short time that it is cold, it is very nice.
The issue here is that the a/c compressor (and cooling fan) is kicking off and on, off and on. After doing a little investigation in the FSM there is apparently a computer for the system called the a/c amplifier that looks at several sensor inputs and determines what to do with the a/c. For whatever reason, this system is choosing to have the compressor behave this way. The FSM states that this is "normal operation" but I think it is forking retarded. There is no reason to have the a/c compressor turn off when the controls are set at max, unless the inside core is freezing...and I can tell you there's no way that is the case because the inside of the car is not that cool.
I have went so far as to jumper a test wire from the compressor to battery power while the engine is running and performance is MUCH improved. However I have not had the ***** to leave it that way at this time until I can do more investigation on what other issues may arise. Part of the problem is that the control switch from the dash seems to operate on 3vdc instead of 12vdc, so using this switch to control a power supply or relay to the compressor will be difficult, and I dont want to ghetto rig any extra switches in the car.
