What does a flooded engine sound like?

I suppose it would just sound bogged down and unwilling to crank over?
Or do you ony hear the starter motor whirring?

It's like the engine is trying to start, but keeps cranking and cranking and cranking.

I associate cranking with hearing the rotors actually turning. When you're flooded do the rotor actually turn?

I'm trying to identify why an 8 would only spin it's starter motor and nothing else... All I heard was the high pitched whine or what sounds like a starter motor...

Hold on, if the starter motor is turning the rotors necessarily have to turn too right?

Bad Starter Solenoid would be my guess. Starter spins - but does not engage the flywheel.

You don't understand the term 'flooded'. It means there is raw gas in the chamber, but it's not full of gas, otherwise it would not turn over (you can't compress a liquid). It's just damped out the potential combustion process, the plugs, and perhaps washed the oil from the seals, meaning compression may be down. The engine will turn over and the starter is what's turning the engine. It just doesn't start.

That is a dead battery or a bad battery connection.

The US Army just might have got the problem right.... Sounds like a reasonable answer. I'll let you know!

I would have to agree. The high pitch noise is just the starter spinning unengaged to the flywheel.

On a car with a working starter, the solenoid pushes the starter gear forward, thereby engaging with the flywheel's gear.

Question...my car is just making a zinging or whirring or whatever you want to call it noise...sounds to me like the starter zinging....I replaced it with an advance auto one and its still doing it. The old starter was going out and i flooded it. It was trying to crank, then it just started making the zinging noise. Assumed trying to start it over and over finally made it go out. But it is doing it still with the new advance auto starter...help...lol
