What a coincidence. I was just wondering the same thing.

Rotary Experimental! Now I feel like a damn caged rat trying to find my cheese. Guess I'll get in my car and experiment with 9k RPMs, definitely something ordinary Piston engines can't do

You guys are all wrong!
Webster defines RX as follows:
"Main Entry: RX
Pronunciation: "är-'eks
Function: noun
Etymology: alteration of <rx>, symbol used at the beginning of a prescription, abbreviation for Latin recipe, literally, take -- more at RECIPE
: a medical prescription"
Hahahahaha. JUST KIDDING!

The first Mazda Rotary in the USA was the R100. The second one was the RX2, then RX3, RX4, & RX7. Each one had a different name in Japan. I see no way that the X is for experimental, but could stand for export. I really feel it was just some marketing guy that knew of the various high quality cars like the Jag XJ and picked the RX only for marketing.

The R clearly seems to designate "Rotary", and M somehow seems to mean something like "uM, not a rotary" (ok, I have no idea how you get M for "piston"). X would make sense for Xport in both cases.
remember, when the Miata first came out in 1989, it was an eXperiment by Mazda to see if the 2 seat roadster is still a viable market
guess what the new CX stands for on the CX-7, "Crossover eXper......"

I also thought the rx meant rotary experimental . However, I like Rx-aight's idea that r denotes rotary and the x denotes generation That makes so much sense. Even if that isnt what it means, im gonna tell people that

It doesn't stand for experimental, you guys are funny. Mazda uses standard naming conventions, more so than any other manufacturer in the world. Since it is Japanese in origin I am sure X means something significant. Remember Racer X in Speed Racer, that show came out a few years before the first Mazda rolled out in the late 60's? Think it might be like that.
X means sport
M means piston
R means rotary
Here are some examples
RX-2 (Rotary Sports Car)
RX-3 (Rotary Sports Car)
RX-7 (Rotary Sports Car)
RX-8 (Rotary Sports Car)
CX-7 (Cross Over Sports Vehicle)
MX-3 (Piston Powered Sports Coupe)
MX-5 (Piston Powered Sports Roadster)
MX-6 (Piston Powered Sports Coupe)
MX-06 (never in production in US)
323 (Low end commuter car)
626 (Mid Range Family Car)
929 (High End Luxary Car)
Mazda Millenia (Only survivor of the $250M Mazda Eunos platform they developed in the early 90's. Least I think it was Euons, been 10 years)
Mazda3
Mazda5
Mazda6
B-2000 (Truck 2li)
B-2200 (Truck 2.2li)
B-3000 (Truck 3.0li)
B-4000 (Truck 4.0li)
And don't forget my first car
Mazda GLC (Good Little Car) Seriously!
Oh yeah, the 808 too.

Rx.....
The one you left out is the one that shoots that theory all to pieces.... the RX-4.
NOBODY would call that Buick imitation a "sports" car!
....and in the case of the RX-3, I would have to say the X stands for "Shitbox" (Bills to prove!) it took me thirty years, but I can finally see it for what it was!

The first rotary car in the US was the R-100. The prototype for the next car was "RX-2" (where RX meant "rotary experimental"). They liked the sound of that better than R-200, or whatever, so the following rotary cars were called RX-?.
