Yeah, I saw this too. It may have at one time been "rotary experimental", but I think it may have changed.

Ya, I think it's safe to say it's no longer an experiment.

So, the CX7 is a Crossover Sports Car?

Maybe so. Remember, Mazda does claim to have put the soul of a sports car in every car they make.

Would you really want to be driving an Experiment?
As previously explained, the protoype was Rotary eXperimental. The big shots liked the sound of RX, and kept it for the production cars. It can't be Export, because RXs are sold in Japan.

Your on-the-money there.

Back in the 60's + 70's when RX clearly stood for "Rotary Experimental" there was no debate about what was what. It was simple black & white, rotary experimental, end of story.

Now days, there are marketing angles on everything & the black & white has now been blurred. I recall some head guy at Mazda USA pointing out his own (marketing based) interpretation on RX that had nothing to do with the original meaning.

So if the Mazda chiefs dont know the companies own history, its easy to relate to all you other confused souls out there wrongly thinking it stands for Rotary Export or what ever else has been suggested......

So those of us that "actually" know will continue to educate those that "think they" know in the hope that all the RX info out there doesn't blur like this piece has.

Umm, just cause you capitalized it doesn't make it any less a valid point. All it really does is highlight how bad you are at searching. Way to be condescending and be bad at the Internet.

I would say :
R for rotary, naturally
X for car from the Mazda range that are non-mainstream products (RX, MX, CX...). That or maybe X for xylophone...
