I live in CT. I have run into at least 6 different 8's by now.
I waved, flashed, or beeped at all of them and got nothing in return.
In Cheshire I was at a gas station and one pulled up to the pump right behind me. The guy didnt even look at me. No wave, no nod, no smile, nothing. HE OBVIOUSLY knew he parked behind another Rx8! It's one of the most distinct looking rear ends on any car. Especially with the tail lights. But nope, nothing.
Another occasion I was pulling into a Starbucks in Bristol, and what do ya know? A Ti Grey just like mine sitting in a parking spot. So I parked one spot over from him, as I hate to park directly next to someone with a nice car. Then WHAT DO YA KNOW AGAIN, just as I'm getting out of my car, the owner comes walking out with 2 girls. He looked at me, didnt say a word, didnt smile, didnt give me the little smirk. Nothing. He apparently thought that I might steal some of his coolness.
If you bought this car to be cool, you should sell it right away. Seems like most people in my area who drive 8's view them as more of a status symbol. Fck you.
I don't care what anyone says, it makes me down right angry when people don't acknowledge my 8 as there sitting in, driving by in, or getting into their 8. It's total horse ****, people need to come back down to earth for a while.

Why do they have to acknowledge you?
If you drove an Accord would you go out of your way to acknowledge every driver that also drove an Accord? What if you drove a Camry? To some people a car is a car.
There are more people out there that would rather be left alone. The 8 is not an exotic car. It isn't priced in any sort of exclusive manner.
Seriously, get over yourself. It's just a car. You did not buy an invite to the illuminati.

How can you compare this car to an Accord? Accords are everywhere. Out of 200 cars you'll easily see 25 Accords. Out of 1000 you'd be lucky to see one 8. And even those odds are a bit generous.
The point is, people who own this car should know what it ensues. You certainly can't care for it like an Accord. This car needs a more aware owner. An owner willing to go a little bit further to make sure it's running right all the time.
It is an exclusive club. The price of the car doesn't make it exclusive, nor does it's body style (which you claim is not exotic but I disagree), it's the rarity of the car. You don't see them often. So when you see another driver in one, it definitely catches your attention, and sometimes you go out of the way to pull up next to them, or wave. And when they do nothing in return, it sucks! How can you argue that?
That last time I felt "bothered" by having to actually lift my arm to wave to somebody was... NEVER.

Our stable includes 3 Mazdas.
The RX8 gets a wave from about 10% of the others.
The CX7 gets a wave from about 10% of the others.
The 5 gets a wave from about 20% of the others. Go figure.
From non-owners;
The RX8 gets the most attention. The dashing style makes it appear to be a Lexus class $50,000 car. A few of the more technical ask a few questions about the rotary expecting it has about twice as much power as it does.
People who ride in the 5 are impressed. It looks like most of the other econowagons ie the Pontiac Vibe, but it rides like a BMW. Two of my wife's co-workers have bought a 5 since she got hers.
The CX7 is like the 5 and the 8 - people like the dashing styling but after a ride are awed to know it's a teeny-weeny 4 banger. Stiff ride but darned flat. Just not big enough for those who've rode with me. They seem to like US iron. Too bad for them.
Oh, I live in Texas - that may add or deduct points for those keeping score.

I caught up to a guy in a black RX-8, traffic was heavy on highway 100 here in Minnesota.
I thougth for sure that it was one of the local guys in the Minnesota RX-8 club till I swooped in next to him all foolishly revved my engine to get his attention only to realize when I got right next to him that it wasn't Malamore.
I smiled, tipped my head and kept going.
He had a look of "what the hell" and then smiled and waved.

One of the two 8's driven by guys in my area has one like mine, but with a spoiler. The first time I saw him about a year ago, I was having a very bad day and in a worse mood. When I saw that red 8 comming toward me, it put a smile on my face. At the same time we waved. That made me even more happy.

I see 8s everyday. A couple of them may acknowledge me and I'll acknowledge them. The ones that don't acknowledge me don't **** me off or make me call them names. Last I checked this was still the land of the free and just because people drive the same car you do doesn't me they want to be in your secret club.
The 8 has sold pretty well and I'd guess that has to do more with the styling and price then it does to do with the Wankel. This means that the majority of other owners you run across don't give two ****s about the motor, suspension, balance, or road feel. They bought what they thought they wanted at the time. Many of them may even be unhappy about their purchase if they didn't do their homework first (bad gas mileage, summer only tires, adding oil, flooding, etc...). I have no right to expect these people to be my buddies.
There are option packages that put both the Accord and Camry (two of the most common Foreign vehicles on the road, IMO) in the same category or even above the 8. The 8 is a relatively cheap sports car with some flair. Just because you think yours is special doesn't make it so. There are minvans and SUVs that carry price tags almost twice that of the 8...don't see those guys waving at each other like idiots, honking, flashing, yelling out their windows, and then flipping the bird when they are ignored.
I love my car (but it ain't a Ferrari). I enjoy my car (for what it is). I'm not out on the road looking for acceptance or someone to legitimize my choice (love me Daddy). Get over it.
Wanna meet people? Go to a meet. That's what they are for.
Wanna drive? Go for a drive.
Don't go for a drive looking to meet people.
If you flew up next to honking and revving I'd ignore you because of the car you are in (any other car would get the bird).

Aside from that I'd give 1/2mv the benefit of the doubt. His posts are well spoken - no need for folsk here to get harsh.

Whaaaa = whining, right? Whaaaa, listen to your self, maybe I should get you a Whaaambulance.
So, he self-labels it a whining rant. We all got things we gotta get off our chests sometimes. No harm, no foul, looks like plenty of people relate anyway.
Granted, general gripes usually belong in the Lounge, but this one was all about RX-8 drivers.

Wow... Some of you guys need to calm down before you post.
I try not to write down EVERYTHING whenever I tell a story or try to make a point because no one wants to read a post the length of a Harry Potter book. If some of you were to take just a second or two to put the pieces together before replying with "½mv²'s daddy didn't give him enough hugs so now he wants to be soul mates with anyone who drives an RX," you'd find yourself with lower blood pressure and less gray hairs...
Never played baseball, actually - too slow for my short attention span. I played Hockey & wrestled instead.
My mom tried to dress me normally, actually, but I dressed up well beyond "funny" on my own. ahh... to be a young teen in the early 90's. Marilyn Manson, Flava Flave, 2Pac... EVERYBODY was dressed "funny" then...
I 'crave' approval and aknowledgement? Not really. I 'enjoy' approval and aknowledgement, but who the hell doesn't? My only problem is that I give a **** about how people feel, and I get a certain warm & fuzzy feeling out of bringing a ray of sunlight into someone's day. Juvinile & pathetic, I know... perhaps someday I'll grow out of this "friendly" phase I'm stuck in...
*Points to post in sticky post: "The Little Things"*
Plus, as you might have concluded from my previous posts, that I'm an adrenaline junkie and am drawn to mechanical marvels.
With RX enthusiasts, yes.
With presumptuous elitests who live to flame, no.
A club? You mean, like, people who are members of rx8CLUB.com? Gee, why didn't I think of that? What the **** was I thinking posting in *this* forum?
Never once did I say I was looking for friends. Never once, to any of the people mentioned in my rant, did I ever ask them to be my friend, give me a hug, or share intimate secrets with me. I just wanted to compliment them for their car. Enthusiast or not, they'll get a little smirk out of it, kinda like when you say "hey, I like your shirt" to some stranger in a bar who happens to be wearing the exact same shirt as you. It's called irony - I do it for the sake of humor, not because I want to have gay mansex with them.
You're absolutely right. However being a dick to me because I tried to complement them isn't exactly "okay."
"Hey, there - nice bike." != "Hey, there - want to make out?"
Some people just have a habit of wanting to be friendly. On behalf of sociable people everywhere, I apologise for ruining your day with our kindness.
It is??????
"Hey there, nice car! Do you thi..."
"**** YOUR MOTHER I HOPE YOU DIE IT'S NOT MY FAULT DADDY DOESNT LOVE YOU"
"...um... alright then, I guess I'll get a battery jump from someone else..."
"Oh, is that all you need? OK then, let me get my cables, buddy!"
Oh, and my FD didn't have a horn (which was clearly stated, btw). I had never seen an FD in person on the road before in my entire life, so I was a little pumped and REALLY wanted to give this guy some sort of acknowledgement - seeing 2 FDs on the road at random is a 1 in a million thing & I wanted to make the most of the moment.
Couldn't make eye contact due to our location, and there was a car between us so waving would have been pointless. I made the most of the options I had. I'm usually not so fanatical, so chill out with your pearls of wisdom.
(See above)

I know this sounds a little strange coming from me, but I think you take it too seriously. You have to expect some people to not notice that you're driving the exact same car. Before I got into RX's, I had a hard time identifing any RX that wasn't the same color as mine. You just get used to seeing your own car as the way ALL of those cars should look. Different colors make the lines of a car look different sometimes. I can think of several instances in which a friend would point out RX's in movies and TV shows and I'd have to take a few moments scrutinize it out to be sure.
However, when people are dicks to you when you try to compliment them, that is quite aggrivating.
You see them every day, I've seen 6 or 7 rotaries over the course of 8 years. Ever think that maybe in my neck of the woods spotting another RX is reason enough for a little excitement?
Neither do I...
Who said anything about being a secret club?
Rotorhead or not, who get's mad at someone for complimenting their car? You have failed to offer any relavant insight to the topic at hand...
OK - your ritalin obviously wore off at this point because you failed to ever introduce, argue, or conclude any of the points(?) you've mentioned here.
First of all, what package comes with the Accord that puts it in the "sports car" category? I Never knew that a 4-door mid size FWD family sedan had an installable package that turned it into "a relatively cheap sports car with some flair."
Secondly, I never said that I thought my FE was the rarest most awesomest most bestest sports car in the whole wide world. In fact, I never really said anything about my car other than the fact that I was in it. What I said was that RX are almost non-existant in my neck of the woods, regardless of what sales charts may say. I don't get all giddy when I see an RX owner because I think I'm about to make a new friend for life - I get excited because it's a rare occurance. Kind of like when you see a Viper or Ferrari - It's a plesant break in the day to day rice-o-thon scenery.
I love & enjoy my car, too. I'm not out on the road looking for acceptance or lgitimization either. I didn't join these forums looking for life buddies, either. I didn't come here and start posting "HaY u guyz!!1 i just bough tan 8 and m like u now want 2 hang out? who here has an 8 and livez in hewstun texis? I need ppl to hang out with. Its kewl don tbe shy - i have an 8 just like u!! :D"
In fact, I pretty much showed up and said "Hi, I'm new. Nice to meet you. Can ask a question? Am I the only person that manages to find the few RX owners in Houston that are total ********? Let me share a few humorous stories with you..."
The fact that you felt the need to respond with "This guy needs hugs lol waht a looser!! His daddy must not love him!!" makes me wonder what the hell YOUR dad did wrong.
"Son, being nice to strangers to a sign of weakness. If anyone you don't know tries to compliment you or establish a common ground of friendship between you the first time you meet them, they need to be put into place. People are only like that because their parents neglected them and they're looking for someone else to cling to."
Does that sound familiar by any chance?
You posted a flame and openly dismissed me and my opinions... Then you came back to the thread to retort against those that didn't side with you...
If anyone is seeking the aproval of others in this thread...
I would love to know what post you read. So far I'm angry at my dad, I flip people off who don't want to join my secret car club, I honk and rev and wave and bounce around like a jackass at every RX I see, I desperately require approval from everyone on the road, and when I'm all alone on a Friday night I get in my car and drive around looking for my soul mate...
...Why the hell would you even recommend me to a meet? If you ever met someone as depressing as that you'd be so overwhelmed by their aura of gloom that you'd want to kill yourself.
I'm honored.

You want to make friends
With presumptuous elitests who live to flame, no.
go to a club (especially an RX8 club meeting or something similar)
but don't expect some stranger to find you inherently interesting because of what you drive.
The other guy may be deep into his ride, but just not give a damn about you - and that's okay.
I run into this on Harleys a lot - some character figures that because he spent 18k on his ride and he's fifty miles from home, that makes him my "bro". No, he's not.
Some people just have a habit of wanting to be friendly. On behalf of sociable people everywhere, I apologise for ruining your day with our kindness.
But I'll still stop and help him (or you) if you're broken down on the road. That's a different deal entirely.

Maybe the fact that my post started with a quote from Mortal Moxie somehow escaped you. I've been arguing with him for the last two or three posts.
I take issue with people getting down on other people for not acknowledging them. Just because you feel the need to be an *** in your car doesn't mean that everyone around you will feel the same way. Again a simple thumbs up or a quick flash of the highs will suffice. Calm down, then drive.
People are told not to make eye contact or acknowledge aggressive drivers. This is for your own safety as it will simply escalate a conflict, hence, when you drive like a maniac, yell, and honk you may be viewed as an aggressive driver regardless of your intention.
Again some people don't want to be bothered. This is their right. Maybe they don't actually like the car. Maybe they are having a bad day, week, month, or year. Maybe they think you or your behavior are scary. It really doesn't matter. Some people do not want to be complimented and you should accept that.
Maybe this just doesn't sink in no matter how many times you read it:
Wanna meet other rotorheads? Go to a meet (It really is this simple).
There are local forum areas at the bottom of the main page. There will be meets and drives listed there that you are welcome to attend. That is where the people that will be open to your advances will gather.
Yes I see RXs on a regular basis. Seeing another FE is really not special to me so I don't totally lose my **** when I see one. Seeing an FD in the summer is slightly rare catching one in the winter is very rare. Seeing an FC is nothing special.
The comparisons to the Accord and Camry are due to the price tags (obviously) debunking the exclusivity of this car. I guess you can get a pass on the exotic comment since you evidently live in WBFE but where I'm at there are actual exotics on the roads and the RX-8 ain't one of them. The RX-8 to many of the owners is probably just another car. There is no logical reason to think that owners of the same car must exchange niceties every time they are within eyesight of each other on the road. Getting upset at the fact that people ignore you is where people come up with the Love me Daddy comment, it was used very often by Howerd Stern on his radio show.
I think I got all the text that was directed at me. You really should address one person at a time...it makes discussions much easier.
That is essentially what I got out of your first post.
You don't live anywhere near me.

I hate having to repeat myself, and we seem to be on different pages, so I'm going to make this short...
You posted, then MM retorted, and then you quoted him. Your inital post was in disagreement with my behavior, to which Moxie came to my defense. When you came down on Moxie's viewpoint, you were also coming down on mine. Heed your own advice and take care not to argue with multiple people at once.
Quote me anywhere I mention driving like an ***.
I'll admit to being a little childish when I saw the FD, but after wanting one and never seeing one for THIRTEEN YEARS, and then spotting one THREE DAYS after buying one of my own, is my behavior really that suprizing?
Again, please quote me anywhere I imply my behavior included anything other than friendly words and smiles.
No matter how shitty of a day I'm having, when someone comes up to me and compliments my car, even though I'm thinking in my head "OMFG **** off, *******," I still have the common decency to smile back and give a friendly wave before I proceed to ignore them. When you're sitting at a redlight in traffic with your windows down & no music playing, acknowledging a compliment from someone requires ZERO effort and doesn't interfere with your journey in any way. I would love to hear a logical explanation as to why any driver of any car has the right to be a dick to fellow driver being friendly at a redlight.
Once again, please point out where I indicate that I wave at other RX owners because I'm trying to meet people and make friends.
Maybe this just doesn't sink in no matter how many times you read it:
This is my 3rd rotary car - I've met most of the local rotorheads & been to a few meets.
Then why didn't you just post that? Why did you have to start attacking & insulting those of us that expect human decency?
I'm still confused as to how the availibility, styling, and uniqueness of the car even became a part of a discussion regarding the frequency of sightings. It wouldn't matter if the car cost 59 cents and looked like a VW Bus - you would still see 15 to 20 times more Camrys & Accords in the course of your day that you would FEs.
And point out to me where anyone said that all FE drivers should exchange niceties whenever they see one another? All Moxie and I said was that we liked to give other RX's forms of acknowledgement when we saw them and we get pissed when people are ******** about it.
Do you *HAVE* to respond? No! But you don't *HAVE* to be a dick about it, either.
I fail to see the logic of "Because there's nothing saying that I have to acknowledge other FEs, I'm going to get angry at those who choose to."
This is a group discussion, bro - I'm arguing with your opinions so all like-minded individuals can join in on either side... same as you - otherwise you would have PM'ed this to me...
Then you should re-read it.
and thank god for that.

That is essentially what I got out of your first post.

I wouldn't treat a fellow rotor head like an *** in my FC, but with all of the yelling, revving, and horn blowing you do I'd probably be a little creeped out. Rare or not, that's a bit stalkerish. although in a parking lot I'd love to have a good rotary chat.

Did somebody say physics?
Regarding post: Kinetic, you may have been a bit overzealous in your attempts at rotary recognition but you haven't earned the level of criticism by some here.
I wave at other rotors.

Granted, general gripes usually belong in the Lounge, but this one was all about RX-8 drivers.

You're right on every point. And "Whaaambulance" must be part of the modern idiom that has escaped my attention, but it is a useful term.
Furthermore, after I posted that last I came across his thread on the DSC of various vehicles. It was a good question, well-framed (albeit at some length, initially).
'scuse me. That Whaaaa-ing about who does and does not acknowledge one's existence based on perceived vehicular brotherhood is an irrational sore point with me. Jeez, I don't wave at other Harley riders, Greyhound bus drivers, scooters, hot-rods, guys with blue eyes (but redheaded females are fair game), or a host of others who may imagine some inchoate, unexplored association based on a commonality of obvious interest.
But put me in a postion where we can strike up a conversation and I'll discuss almost anything at almost any length. But waves, winks, or thumbs-up? Why? (That's a rhetorical question. Answers are neither solicited nor desired. )

I'll keep this one short and sweet.
I was out in West Hartford tonight on my way to Best Buy. While sitting at a light, I saw on the other side of the turnpike, another 8 coming to a red light. It was dark, but I could tell just from the headlights. As he was making his U-turn to get onto the other side I flashed him. TO MY SURPRISE! I got the double beep! Velocity Red Shinka. Looked nice. He pulled into a gas station and I just drove by once my light turned green. That's all, no big deal, no huge fuss, he didn't make a banner for me, and I didn't shoot flares out of my roof to tell him that I see him. Just a flash and a beep in return. Nothing more.
All is well. For once, an 8 owner who actually doesn't have their head up their ***. A 8 owner who SAW ME TOO! Just as I saw him, and acknowledged me.
Harley owners always wave at one another.
I think 8 owners should do the same. That's just me though.
